Idiocy that bugs me, #24 :

"Pft, sports games? Why don't you just go outside and play the real thing hm?"
"Guitar hero? Why not learn to play a real guitar??"

First off, I'm no fan of sports games, but the above argument is crap. Maybe they DO play it outside already? Let us replace the genres for an example:

"Pft, RTS games? Why don't you just go outside and raise your own army of space marines to fight off the encroaching ork threat hm?"

Maybe they want to play a computer game and not play a sport. I've heard that the two differ.

The same thing applies to Guitar Hero. Is there anyone out there who thinks that beating Dragonforce on expert will enable them to play it for real? No. They enjoy rhythm-action games.

This concludes today's lesson.

But Mr_Czar, dear, if I COULD raise my own army of Space Marines and fight off an ork threat, I would. (Okay, no, but then, I don't play that particular game either.)

The reason I don't get sports games is the same reason I loathe people living vicariously through a team of ridiculously overpayed athletes to make up for their own lives, and be a part of something more succesful. With guitar hero playing for real is much more fun too, but there I get it, I don't approve of it, I find it pretty stupid and I believe people would enjoy playing real instruments more than the game, if they took the chance. Most people won't though, and I won't state my suspiciouns as to why, it would sound too condescending.

I can understand some sports games. I can understand wii sports for example. I can understand Mario tennis, I can understand a boxing game, or a game like blood bowl. I can't understand a football ( soccer for you yanks) game though. Not only because they could just as well go outside and play it, but because of how the games are made. If someone made a football game that was about the sport instead of about cool real-life players, and advertising, and oh-this-is-so-hip-and-we-got-real-players-yay then I could understand it.

But then, I've never understood the whole celebrity thingy anyway, and as said before, I loathe the football industry. I suppose it's just one of those mysteries of life.

RTSs and sports games.
I just feel like I shouldn't need to take courses on a game in order to play them.
Sports? I can't get into real ones, let alone these fictional ones.

The Genre i don't quite understand is the sprots category.

I mean, it's the same thing over and over again only on the cover it's "NFL/NBA/WHATEVER 20XX" and i don't think anything changed in it.

the only sports game i liked was "Space Jam" (you know, The Loony-Toons movie where they play Basketball with aliens o_O)which featured silly moves and quirky minigames at half-time.

Sports games mainly because I find it more fun to actually play the sport outside than with a controller.

There are some simulation games I can understand, mainly just simulation racing games, but I don't understand flight simulators.

I don't even know where to categorize some of the games I've seen: Dirty Dancing, Democracy, etc. You would think, "Oh, Dirty Dancing. I saw that movie. I guess I get to play as Patrick Swayze and dance to 80's songs. Does it come with a dance mat?" No, you manage the resort. I mean, I wouldn't play the game even if it was a horrible DDR clone, but it's still strange that it's management and not dancing.

I can't seem to get the hang of sports games either. I even played basketball in high school and still play the occasional pick-up game of BBall, but I can't win a game of video game BBall to save my life. I don't know if it's because I can't seem to switch players fast enough when I need to or what, but I always lose terribly.

I can't play football games either. I enjoy watching them on TV and in person. When watching, I feel like I have a pretty good idea what is going on, but when playing a football video game, I'm out of luck. I have a hard time picking plays. The most recent football games, have those "coach's advice" features which help a bit, but I'm still not sure about who to give the ball to, when to run or throw etc.

I like to pitch in baseball games, especially on the Wii, but I can't hit a ball in a video game at all. I can occasionally hit a slow pitch softball in real life, but always strike or foul out in video games.

I don't even try the other sports video games as I don't understand much of anything about the other sports. My only exceptions to not liking sports games are golf and bowling. I'm much better at golf and bowling on the Wii and Xbox than I am in real life. I totally understand those games in video game form and do well at them.

I don't know if you'd call billiards (pool), darts and shuffleboard sports or not, but I'm better at the video game versions of them as well.

The other genre of games I cannot understand is survival horror. I mean, I get the point of them, you try to not get killed by monsters, but I don't understand the appeal of them. I like to kill monsters, but I can do without the over-the-top blood and gore and scenes that make you jump out of your seat in most horror games.

I never understood driving games. The only fighting games that I ever understood wear the Smash Brothers games, at least in those you can set Pikacho on fire. Sports games bewilder me. Sports games are sports without going outside or physically doing stuff. Just what the hell is supposed to be left to provide fun.

Fucking gamepad Halo clones. If I want to do a gay little dance with the enemy like we've got swords and shields, I'll play a game with fucking [http://www.taleworlds.com/] swords and shields [http://www.age-of-chivalry.com/].
