Game of the Decade?

SO according to the VGAs, Half Life 2 is the game of the decade. Alright, I'm not gonna go against that for many reasons. However, it made me think about it. Personally, I didn't agree with some of the nominees for that category. Games like Red Dead and Batman (that came out about a year ago) are REALLY good but for them to be considered the best games of the decade? I wouldn't necessarily agree. But that's just me. I'm just glad a game like CoD wasn't nominated to begin with.

So:
-Do you agree/disagree with the winner (Half Life)?
-Do you agree/disagree with the nominees?
-What game would you vote best of the decade? Is it on that list?

I think splitting up the award by genre could help balance it out although "Strategy Game of the Decade" isn't quite as prestigious. Game of the Year is broad enough, Game of the Decade is just massive in the games it has to choose from.

The VGA nominees? Well, I disagree with ME2, Wii Sports (I'll admit its importance, but game of the decade is too much), and Wind Waker feels like a weird choice, but I don't really give a damn about the rest. Out of the choices, I'd probably vote Shadow of the Colossus

Because a "Game of the Decade" right now only allows games back to January 1st 2003, I can't just name Morrowind. Gosh, I'll actually have to think about this one

I don't know what would be considered Game of the Decade, but it'd have to definitely represent everything that defined this page of gaming history. They should only do game of the decade once a decade not once a year :/ Shoulda done it in 2010 and again in 2020 type of thing.

Shadow of the Colossus is my game of the decade. Half Life 2 is fine and all, but I feel like a lot of the appreciation of the game came from its technical prowess in its time. Indeed the Source engine is very impressive, but any game whose appeal is based largely on a technical aspect is not exactly a timeless game. Going toward the future the valiant efforts of the physics engine will look more and more comical as it becomes increasingly obsolete. Of course, Half Life 2 had other things going for it, such as its expert game pacing, and its open-ended gameplay, but I think you catch my drift.

Shadow of the Colossus is like no game before it, and no game since has even attempted to emulate it. It's sheer artistic brilliance, encompassing the potential of what video games as a medium can accomplish. The appeal of Shadow of the Colossus comes from its stellar art direction, utterly unique gameplay, and minimalistic yet brilliant narrative; all of which are timeless. It doesn't use any technology as a crutch to elevate its legacy. It is one of the most interesting and creative compilations that gaming has ever seen.

I still like Half Life 2, so don't get me wrong, but I know I'm probably going to get slammed for this.

I think HL2 is the most overrated game of the decade. I don't think it's half as good as most people say...

For me personally it would be Warcraft III I think.
I have put down so much time into those two games and the story is really good.
My subjective opinion thou.

I do not think Half Life 2 should of gotten the vote. I know that sierra is a lazy commie gaming industry but Tribes 2 would of gotten my vote a million times over. just as a examply.. I miss tribes so much..

OT: if anything ion the past 10 years. anything other then HL2. good game but not worth the reward.

Shadow of the Colossus. Probably the first AAA (AA?) art-game title to really gain much tenure, for many reasons stated in various above posts. On a wider-scale, it more or less through down a statement that you do not fight giant monsters by hacking at their shins with swords or pre-animated QTE/Cutscene things anymore, that sadly few Action-Adventure/ARPGs seem to have quite gotten through their skulls yet.

Littlebigplanet - A nintendoy platformer outside the proprietary stranglehold of Nintendo. Wildly successful, and still the dominant (only?) game for consoles to embrace custom content.

Neverwinter Nights (2002) : There's still active gameservers for this today that have hundreds of people playing, and its still getting more mods and user-made upgrades. Its essentially the closest thing you get to D&D in a video game. Its also largely still overshadowing its sequel (Where they went astray and focused on single-4 players), and will probably outlast that 'Neverwinter' Diablo wannabe thing thats become of the original 3rd sequel.

Why are we voting on a game of the decade in 2012? It's so weird. Shouldn't we have been doing this 2 years ago?

HL2 isn't a bad selection, but I feel like it gets there more on the strength of its engine and the many mods/conversions it spawned rather than just the game itself.

From a purely PC centric position, an award from 2002-2012 belongs to World of Warcraft. It's an enormously successful game...possibly the most financially successful of all time, and certainly one of the highest sellers. It was a pop cultural phenomenon that held 10-20 times more subscribers than most of its rivals had sales. It popularized what had until that point in time been a niche genre and pushed it into mainstream awareness. And it is STILL relevant today, 8 years after the date of its release, as one of the most played/populated online games.

I find it perplexing that so many people are taking Spike seriously...
Also, that's not how "_______ of the Decade" works.

My main issue with the spike awards is that, well, it's SPIKE.

Also, GotD? Since when has that ever been an award?

Yeah, it makes no sense at all. That's Spike for you.

I can't think of a single game that has done more for the hobby of gaming in the last decade more than any other. As someone above mentioned, doing it by genre would make more sense.

Absolutely Half-Life 2. Not only was a brilliant narrative, it was a technological leap forward in game development at the time.

I believe it was because the Spike VGAs were 10 years old. So it's a decade for them.
