I see loads of people wanting this, and while I'd like to see them safe and whole, what a lot of people don't seem to get is that they're basically the Lannisters with better PR and some teamwork. I mean the only reason their family is where its at is because of Olenna's guiding hand. On top of one of them being a total *****, Cersei and Tyrion distrust one another and hate themselves, while Jaime has some serious commitment issues and psyche issues of his own to get through, and a lot of this is down to Tywin being a terrible father.Dragonlayer said:

At this point I want Tyrion and Varys to take on a Statler and Waldorf role in the show and just heckle the shit out of everything that's going on. I also want them to develop omnipresence so they can make fun of everything that's going on at the same time (though I suppose Varys probably already could).

Well, it's pretty dumb and silly and hastily filled in, which anyone who had been paying attention for the last five seasons could have predicted when they ran out of book material. There was an oft-repeated bit of nonsense that the show runners mixed in good additions with their questionable additions, and that overall the effect of their changes on the narrative was a net positive. This was never true, and now you can enjoy a couple of seasons of nonsense as evidence.
That said, it's a lot more enjoyable now that there isn't a piece of far superior source material to weigh it against. Simply responding to stupid events with "How stupid!" instead of "How stupid" *and* "They !$%$% ruined it" is a big improvement.
The only real question now is how quickly the degraded narrative will derail the show and lose the accumulated goodwill the book material earned them. Too much more screen time for De Bad Pussy Crew and things could go south with calamitous speed.
The Tyrells are definitely schemers, and possibly even more aggressively/poisonously than the Lannisters. Oleanna is certainly a shrewder and more gifted games(wo)man than Cersei, and they are quite willing to repeatedly use their eldest daughter as a pawn in power plays. Mace is a blustering, power hungry buffoon. Loras is prideful and myopic.

The depravities of the Lannisters are oft-overstated, and primarily fueled by Cersei's unhinged ambition (to say nothing of her Targaryen style relations with her brother). Tywin, for all that he was a bad father by modern standards, does not have a terribly uncommon relationship with his children. We see in Randall Tarly an even more abusive and unforgiving father figure, to say nothing of the likes of Roose Bolton or Walder Frey. Tywin is prickly and proud and inflexible, but he was also one of the greatest rulers the realm ever knew...guiding it through a period of security and plenty, and keeping the increasingly deranged King more or less in check. Yes, he was an avaricious and cruel man with a lot of hidden lusts and overt hypocrisy, but that's A Song of Ice and Fire for you. It's all about stripping the veneer off people and demonstrating how their flaws and even sometimes their strengths undo them. Ned's integrity. Stannis's rigidity. Jon's and Dany's hero complexes. Indeed. Truly, what distinguishes House Tyrell from Lannister? Well their kids don't hate each other, and they are willing to work together on stuff.Zeconte said:
That's mainly down to the family Matriarch (or Patriarch in the Lannisters' case). Tyrell tactics so far haven't exactly been unique to The Reach, unless its something about bribing Salsa with a pleasure barge.
Having said all this, that doesn't make the Tyrells benevolent by any means, they still want power just like the Lannisters, and when push comes to shove I'd be surprised and impressed if they relinquish any power peacefully for the good of the realm.

The show's default method this season seems to just be stabbing people in the belly and letting them fall down. If we go with your method at least there'd be variety :/Chimpzy said:

The only major issue I take is with Snow, apparently we just flick people back into life from now on... one would think that shit takes major risk and sacrifices. But that is how a shoddy producer would do it, need the story to go down this way so engage magical plot of magic.

The Jon Snow resurrection was predictable as hell, but I'm fine with it. I'm just glad they didn't kill off Ghost (no, don't hurt the big puppy!).
I'm fine with Balon dying since he was supposed to be dead already. I was beginning to wonder why he was still alive.
I think I'm in somewhat of a minority here in that I merely have mixed feelings on the Dorne controversy, rather than hating it outright. I actually laughed when she stabbed him through the back of the head, since it was so dishonorable that I found it funny. But, on the other hand, moved the tone dangerously close to cheesy action movie tone. I'm not going to claim GoT is some kind of high art, and I'm well aware the show overall has upped to quippinessYes I know that's not a real word, but words are created out of necessity, and GoT has created such a necessity with it's extreme quip density. of all characters significantly from the books, but it's normally treated such betrayals with more seriousness than that. The sand snakes are that poisonousno pun intended combination of stupid, self righteous, callous, and somehow always managing to achieve their goals.
I can't quite articulate what it is about them, but pretty much from their introduction they've felt somewhat out of place in the story.
On a somewhat more positive note, we're (probably) now witnessing the fall of House Bolton. With Roose out of the way it's only Ramsey leading things, so unless they give him even more ridiculous plot armor (they seem to have learned from Joffrey that audiences will keenly await certain character's deaths if you make them hateable enough) it seems like things will go ill for him. Roose, while not a nice person, was certainly shrewd enough to realize that fear alone isn't enough to keep you in power, since if you stumble for even a second everyone will betray you immediately.
"If you acquire a reputation as a mad dog, you'll be treated as a mad dog."
These words by Roose pretty much sum up and probably predict Ramsey's story line. He's too arrogant and short sighted to recognize a ruler's need for reputation, despite Roose's attempts to teach him, and so he'll surely bite off more than he can chew and run out of friends soon enough.
The stuff with Sansa and Theon is, I'd say, actually worth the nonsense of the last season. Although, on that note, I'm actually rather surprised that Stannis apparently is confirmed for dead after all. Did they intentionally fake us out just make it more ambiguous, or was it accidental?
It all seems rather disjointed at this point.
Still, despite the rapid killing off of characters, this season is already turning out better than the last.

That's a good point actually. Where the fuck is Lord Baelish, and what was he even trying to accomplish last season? I know that in the books we last saw him in the vale doing what he does best; climbing the political ladder. After a quick trip to the wiki to refresh my memory of what he was even doing last season, it seems he's married Sansa to the Boltons for no other reason than to anger the Lanisters so he can then offer them to use the knights of the Vale to take over Winterfell in return for being appointed the warden of the north ... or something. It seems rather unclear how he intends on hiding his involvement in Sansa's escape and marriage, since he's been busily riding across the countryside with Sansa, has revealed himself to the vale, had an encounter with Brienne of Tarth, has met with the Boltons under the Vale's banner and so would surely be outed by the Boltons if the Vale intended to attack, etc.Silvanus said:

I just wanted to put down my thoughts plus respond to a couple here:
1) Last season you could definitely tell the TV writing from the novel writing because it got very predictable very quick. This season is turning out better, still on the predictable side but it feels like they got pointers from Martin at least. I actually never read the novel so take that for what it's worth.
2) The Bolton situation played out almost exactly as expected, the only deviation was that I thought he was actually going to stab him sooner (Before the cliche "you're my first born" statement) but it's fitting because that's just how Ramsey is. Plus I actually liked that the foreshadowing of the mad dog comment... and yeah I think Ghost will get the last laugh on that topic. I don't see him making it past a few more episodes with few allies and stuck between Jon/WhiteWalkers and the rest of Westeros.
3) Bran is getting interesting... I mean up until he took over Hodor his most interesting role was falling out of a tower. Now we'll get to see a young Ned Stark and the origins of Jon Snow though Bran's vision... and then hopefully he's not just relegated to the guy that shows up at the end to say "But you ARE a real prince Jon Snow, or should I say, Jon Targaryen!"
4) Dorne... meh. Maybe the books make it sound more interesting than the show... but Martel was the only interesting thing Dorne has committed to the show.
5) Daenerys... I'm done. Seriously I've lost count how many times she has gone from slave to ruler and back.
I really don't get it?! Is it a running joke to see how many titles she can accumulate? All this build up about how great a ruler she could be + all the turmoil that was happening around her... it was a great setup to show her actually RULING and showing how great a leader she could be by uniting the people and unmasking the hidden plots... setting herself up to return to Westeros...

Nope, she's a slave again, hope you didn't expect any actual progress with this meandering shit storyline, lol.
Besides a few brief glimpses at what could be a great storyline Daenerys has consistantly been the most boring part of this show since episode one season one. She never succeeds, everything she does just kind of peters out and unlike all the characters who can die in Westeros, she's the only one over there so you know she's not going to die, she has more plot armour than Jon Snow!
6) Speak of the devil... Jon Snow... I'm okay with it, I really wish they didn't drag that scene out... but maybe it was for all the casual fans who haven't read the Song of Fire(Daenerys) and Ice(Jon) theory. I think they should have pulled a bait and switch personally... something like in Bleach where Ichigo is part Shinigami and part Hollow... Jon should have started to revive as an undead, caught between worlds so to speak, maybe heard the whisperings of the Whitewalkers in his ear...

I don't mind Ramsey killing Roose, I always thought that was how the Bolton lord would meet his end. But its to soon and to out of the blue. Roose's story just wasn't done yet.

Yes and No, I think they are cleaning up the cast because we're coming to the home stretch and they want to focus on certain arcs. I agree that I don't find it as appealing because in place of complex stories we're going to get simplified TV level writing.Hades said:

Yeah when they first introduced Doran I got the feeling he was going to be someone to take seriously, like there was going to be hell to pay for Martel's death... but that went nowhere. I think they are killing him off to replace him with Sand, who is impetuous and driven by revenge, so they have an excuse for the sub-par way they are going to handle Dorne's efforts in the coming war.
I get what you mean about the writers not getting him, instead of coming across as conflicted and desperate, being pulled in 2 directions... he just felt like 2 separate people. But I disagree about his death; I think he's been out of that race for a while and at the end he was just a vehicle for getting Davos and the Red Woman to Jon so his death was just tying off a loose end.
Now that people are in place and Jon's fierce loyalty sufficiently shaken, the Whitewalkers just have to overwhelm the Wall and force him south (where he'll pick up Sanza and deal with Ramsey) and we can start getting to the final act of this sprawling show.

Also, if they were going for a more violence oriented show, they should have kept Victarion. That guy is so cool.

To be brutally honest, I don't really care about who wins the Iron Throne, or even that much about the impending zombie apocalypse (though if more Hardhome quality episodes surface I shall be singing a different tune): I just want justice for the Starks, and the Tyrells are more likely to grant that then the Lannisters. I'm well aware the Tyrells are extremely ambitious, conniving and manipulative, but unlike the lion-flag toting cunts, the Tyrells understand you can gain the support of others through acts of kindness and charity, rather then fear and oppression (no matter how ultimately self-serving). It's less to do with the fact that she's a Mary Sue and more the fact that the Red Priests, even in the book, are all utter bullshit. Every lastone that we've met all have bullshit powers. Christ, Victorian Greyjoy, Balon's brother that didn't murder him, met one in the last book and he not only cured Balon's infected arm, he gave him a super strength arm as black as coal. She brought someone back to life? Big whoop, Thoros of Myr did it six times. And the first time WAS by accident.
