I think anyone who lets a game's fans ruin the experience, doesn't deserve to enjoy it in the first place.

Well I absolutely love all the saints row's it?s just a shame all the fans are idiot wanabee gangsters who love the idea of a (sigh) a purple dildo bat which is in the new one, which I can?t stand. The most annoying part about the saint?s row fans is that the people who make saints row are now starting to give them what they want aka dildo bat. Doing this unfortunately will make the game a lot worse in years to come
My character in saints row 2 runs around with a traffic cone on her head grinning manically and shooting rocket launchers at pigeons.

Dildo bat is a step down.

This is why co-op games are so much fun, there's less irritability. Also, I think the only first person shooter multiplayer I know of that doesn't have jerks is Crysis 2

I love the Mass Effect games and yet ever since I joined the Bioware Social Network (as a way to socialize with other fans of Ashley Williams without fear of being picked on) more and more stuff has just started to piss me off.
So many vicious debates and flamewars, they just divide into different groups depending on who you like and snipe bitterly at each other across the board. I've spent more time angrily having to defend my position on things among Mass Effect fans then on ANY OTHER FORUM.

To be fair though, they aren't all bad and in places I find some great people who are fun to talk to, so I guess that's enough to justify why the fanbase hasn't totally turned me off Mass Effect games yet.

Gears of War, the multiplayer used to be brilliant, now it just annoys me. I think it's because when your the last man standing, everyone watches, it puts me off, and you get twats complaining at everything you do... like a corpse has any valid input :D

I always feel like once I buy a game, I'm entitled to play it however I want - if some snot nosed 12 year old doesn't like the way I play, then that's their problem. Personally I miss playing Farcry on that LAN hack on the original XBox, those were some great battles. I'm looking forward to Farcry3, designing levels and getting into some trully dynamic online battles. I'm not even buying Gears3.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The reason I only mention that one is because I got CoD4 for Mac in the brief time where quick-scoping was non-existent and the playerbase was reduced, THAT was fun.

The playerbase ruined WoW for me. Antisocial jerks wherever you went.
Play on a private server, they're much nicer on there (Unless it's an ultra competitive one)

Being a primarily single-player...uh...player...I don't really see how other players can ruin a game for other people. If anything, my inability to get 3 people together has greatly diminished my ability to fully enjoy Left 4 Dead and 2. Sure I was able to get together with random people online but I'd assume it's better with people you actually know and, like playing with. On the other side of that coin, Volition punched me in the arm (metaphorically) when I tried playing Saint's Row and 2 multiplayer offline and on one machine.

Heroes of Newerth, MW2 and Black Ops. CoD was decent when you had dedicated servers and admins had some control over the douchebags, but in Black Ops there seems to be so many idiots that admins have simply given up trying.

Single player games can't really be ruined by their fanbase. No matter how annoying they are, it doesn't make the game any worse.

Multiplayer are a different story though.

well as a PC gamer I can tell you just stay off the PC centric Crysis forums. The lack of DX11 support from the box didn't go down too well.

Though I still play
This - I've never found a bigger hive of retardation than in LoL but it is still fun as hell

WoW really has as well, it seems if you play during weekdays all you get is the retards how go "gawd your dps is shit uninstall the game naows plx"... then they die because they stand in a boss' area of effect spell which has "BOSS IS CASTING X SPELL, MOVE" on the screen... then blame the healer. Also seems the game has shifted to speed > over social interaction too

Fans don't ruin games.

The only problems fans create for games exist inside the head of those who gives a crap about the fans, aka. you. Or in short: It's you who are ruining Halo for yourself, because you are letting the fanbase affect you when you don't have to.

Fans, however, sometimes ruins sequels because developers sometimes let them have too much influence instead of following their instincts.

Nearly all multiplayer experiences I've ever personally had have been ruined by online players.

The main exception comes in the form of RTS games on PC. I've been able to enjoy many of those games online without major problems (although they still come up, just not all the time).

On a side topic, this is the main reason I'm personally concerned about Diablo 3. The online community for D2 was awful and ruined the experience for me. Seeing as D3 has no offline mode, I'm concerned that I wont be able to truly enjoy the game. Hopefully they'll allow you to completely mute the world around you and enter combat areas alone like in Guild Wars.

Don't forget about elitist. Everything was terrible and everyone sucked because they were just too awesome for us, and Blizzard making generally good choices versus catering exclusively to the same people that are driving down their sub count is "The reason this game isn't good anymore".

That being said, WoW also had an equally strong, if not larger chunk of good to amazing people in it, but that's just the way life in general works, most people are decent at the core of things, but the asshole ones are the most visible.

On the subject of the actual OP's topic, WoW is a given for me, as explained above, but Bioware games in general always gave me the worse rub. As far as the games themselves, they were usually solid 8 out of 10 single player ordeals, but the mentality of some (emphasis on some) of the companies fans towards other games, often on this very site, just sort of trained me to have contempt for the company as a kneejerk response to the violent level's of praise the games get from their fanbase, at the expense of literally everything else.

I have a very similiar problem with valve games. It also doesn't help that in every damn "your favorite game" or "reccomend me" style thread, atleast 1 of the first 5 people will recommend mass effect 2, sometimes to a person asking for a game genre it doesn't match up with. I swear, one time I saw a guy ask if he should buy MVC3, or mortal combat, and someone bassicly said "those games suck, buy mass effect 2", I nearly shat bricks xD.

I know it's not healthy, but it's hardwired by this point xD.

Warhawk. There's always some asshole on your team who thinks it's hilarious to teamkill every person on their team that they possibly can.

Online games: Most of them.
Off-line games: None of them.
Don't give a shit about other people opinions about games I like.
It's only when I have to interact with said people that it hits the fan.

CoD and Battlefield!
The games are great and I really enjoy them but the fans are ridiculous!
It's like you have to choose one or the other because God will strike you down with the power of a million smurfs if you even consider liking the other!

Almost as bad as the XBOX vs PS3 fanboys!

STFU seriously no-one cares one console/game is better than another people play what they like and it's got fuck all to do with you....not you specifically! =]
