Actually upon further research, we wouldn't even get Morrowind in The Elder Scrolls series before it had to die. 2 games came out in-between Daggerfall and Morrowind, so we wouldn't even see Morrowind and Oblivion, some of the best damn games ever!

And even Metal Gear, we wouldn't see MGS2, as there are two different MG2's (original Japanese one, made by Hideo and American (known to be shit) version that was just made to get some quick dosh)).

Though I think we're taking his analogy a bit too serious...
Halo 3 didn't need a cliffhanger. It ended the same way it started, with the Master Chief in stasis. I like the symmetry of that, it makes him more than a man, he becomes a figure of legend. Honestly, how many stories have you read/watched/played that as based around the idea that the hero will arise to face the new challenge and then disappear again?

Unfortunately, it looks like Halo 4 will just be more of the same again. Same enemies, same gameplay, same motifs, same story... 343 could do almost anything with the series, but I am willing to bet it will be another humans vs covenant vs "other" story.

There is a lot more I could say, but it would all be off topic.

OT: Halo, Gears of War, God of War, Assassin's Creed, CoD, anything Star Wars.
Not so much "THEY MUST ALL DIE", more that these series have been milked dry. Please, please, please just put them down for a couple of years, see what else arises, then come back to them.

None really. Every game series has enough life in them to continue on for years. People who complain that this or that particular series (Call of Duty for example) is around too much and dominating the market have obviously never looked past it's box on the store shelf. There are tons and tons of different games.

If the continued existence of a particular series makes you angry or even annoyed, it's time to step back and examine your life. If video games are making you angry, rather than relieving that anger, perhaps you should find another hobby.
It's not always a case of getting angry with series. It's when you see that a company is effectively ruining a series because they know they (or hope) that they can still get more money from it. Think about it. This demand to create as much money from an IP is a terrible thing. Look how many fanchises have been tainted, and not just games. Films do it too.

No game series needs to die. What should happen with series like AssCreed, Final Fantasy, and Call of Duty is that they should pause so that they release every 3 or so years so that the games get the proper development they need and so that there's time to enjoy other stuff.
You do realize Final Fantasy releases a single game after a couple (or more) years, right?

Other than that, I agree. I don't think series should end, but I think they should try to take some years to build up on top of it and innovate. Series that feel like every iteration is mostly the same (like Call of Duty, Assassins Creed or God of War) or that it feels like they can't reconnect with what made them special (Final Fantasy or Sonic) should take some time to their priorities straight.

I'm not too sure what that "one last story" business at the end of Mass Effect 3 was about because we all know about the unsatisfactory ending and how it poo-poo'd in most our hearts with mighty vigor. So even though we'll all eventually see the next installment come to light some day, I wish the Mass Effect series dead.

As much as love the Animal Crossing series, Nintendo needs to step their shit up and think of new ways to keep the player interested in playing the game or in can just rot in the dirt.

Also, FF does announce tons of games and then wastes their efforts on multiple titles. Not to mention that they don't use much of their non-FF or DQ titles.

I don't have a problem with any game series, as long as they don't start getting stale and re-releasing the same game with a different skin and maybe one or two different gadgets...

Much like Assassins Creed 2 - Revelations, 2 was brilliant, Brotherhood was mechanically better than 2 but just essentially the same game, and Revelations was just beating a dead horse... i was glad that when I saw AC3, it looked visually and mechanically different to the Ezio saga

I've never seen a franchise "ruined" in any regard. All I see are the most hardcore fanbase throw a fit when a franchise takes a turn they don't like.

Take Transformers for example. Bay's Transformers movies are pretty bad, but they're bad due to sloppy writing, overuse of shakycam, waaaaay too many explosions and a massive military hardon that focues on characters other than what the films are named after. NOT because they don't "remain true" to what Transformers is supposed to be.

A franchise can't be ruined. They only have bad installments that are bad on their own merits, and later installments can be better. When a franchise takes a turn downhill, that doesn't mean it will stay downhill.

Look at Star Wars. 1977 we got a swashbuckling space adventure. 2005 we got a Space Opera masterpiece. 2011 we got perhaps the most interesting online game since WotLK.

A word to any franchise owner. Look at the 10% of your audience that claims to be loyal fans. Don't ever take their input, they have no idea what the fuck they're talking about.
I understand what you are saying, and I agree. I'm not arguing that series should be stopped dead, never to be touched again. I'm saying that there are definitely points where you want the series to stop for a time because all the good ideas, or the drive behind it have gone. Let the series rest for a few years, then come back to it fresh. Halo and CoD are great examples of this. If the developers could just back off for a few years.

For me, Star Wars is the ultimate example of this. If you just take the films, then it's not too bad. Add in the games, the expanded universe, the Old Republic universe, the roleplaying games, the animated series, the animated film, the christmas special, the toys, the other mech, the fanfic, the slash, etc... It's all a bit much. I would be very happy if Lucasarts just stopped, ever for a year.
Take a break, find out what made the series great, find out why it's not doing so well (in my opinion). Then start again.
