Just for fun, say what you think is better (and only if you have played the respective games):
Also, you might wanna take off your potential nostalgia glasses :)

1. Chrono Trigger vs Chrono Cross
2. Planescape Torment vs Baldur's Gate 2
3. Mass Effect 2 vs KotoR 1
4. Final Fantasy 7 vs any other Final Fantasy (you choose one)
5. Half-Life 1 vs Deus Ex 1
7. Fallout 1 vs Fallout 3
8. Gothic 2 vs Morrowind
9. Dragon Age Origins vs Oblivion (with mods and all)
10. Metal Gear Solid 3 vs Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
11. God of War vs Prince of Persia (the PS2 games)
12. Bioshock vs System Shock 2
13. FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer
14. DotA vs Heroes of Newerth vs League of Legends
15. Counter-Strike vs Team Fortress 2
16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO

Those are all match-up I can currently think of that are somewhat well balanced.

There are vs threads with a concept like "Call of Duty vs Halo" but this is just taking it to a whole new level.

*flame shields deployed*

Out of all these I played:

7. Fallout 1 and Fallout 3 - Fallout 1 was several hundred googolplex times better than 3
9. Dragon Age and Oblivion - DA:O only had a good story, while Oblivion had a good story AND also good gameplay
13. FIFA and PES - I like my teams licensed - FIFA

Hmm, time for me to get flamed...

7. Fallout 1 vs Fallout 3 - I was never interested in Fo1 (as I'm in the 'talentless, worthless generation of gamers whose shallow perception of 'good' forces game companies to go to new levels of controversy in order to sate our blood lust' - labled as such by some random internet person) but I liked Fo3s story and the gameplay.

9. Dragon Age Origins vs Oblivion (with mods and all) - never played TESIV with mods (I had it on 360) but I liked it FAR more than the section I played at a friends house of Dragon Age.

16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO - MW1 hands down - good campaign, good multiplayer, good characters, not resorting to the 'Yay America' of CoD3. Black Ops has one good character - Hudson, the campaign is shit with America saving the day (the end scene is like something out of bloody Team America) with no help or even awknoledgement (?) from / to any other country except the enemies.

I also liked MW2s campaign and multiplayer so my opinion is probably invalidated by someone who'll troll this last sentence.

1. Chrono Trigger vs Chrono Cross
Don't know. I didn't play either, nor do I know anything about them.
2. Planescape Torment vs Baldur's Gate 2
I heard great things about Planescape Torment, but so far have only played the first 10 minutes or so and have not been able to get into it (which is a shame). BG2 is my favorite game ever.
3. Mass Effect 2 vs KotoR 1
It's about equal for me, but I think that at the time I enjoyed Kotor more. Had it been Mass Effect 1 vs. Kotor 2, I think I'd have gone with ME.
4. Final Fantasy 7 vs Final Fantasy 8
I beat FF8 two or three times. I played FF7 twice, but both times lost interest about 3/4 into the game. I don't know why. All I know is that I did really like 8, and I haven't played any other FF, because Square decided it wasn't going to make PC versions anymore.
5. Half-Life 1 vs Deus Ex 1
Probably Deus Ex, because I tried the beginning of Half-Life and didn't like it.
7. Fallout 1 vs Fallout 3
I don't know. I only played a little bit of 3, and it was nice (I don't know why I stopped), but the concept of 1 appeals to me more.
8. Gothic 2 vs Morrowind
Morrowind was awesome. Probably my second favorite game. I think the only Gothic I played was 3 and I wasn't very impressed.
9. Dragon Age Origins vs Oblivion (with mods and all)
Again, a hard choice. I enjoyed and beat DA:O. I started enjoying Oblivion and the mods are awesome, but in the end I didn't really play it all that much (and never came near to beating it).
10. Metal Gear Solid 3 vs Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
I have no idea, never played either.
11. God of War vs Prince of Persia (the PS2 games)
I don't have a PS2, but I played nearly all PoP games, and I am generally a fan (although I couldn't get into the last one). The concept of GoW appeals to me, but not having a console means that I never played it.
12. Bioshock vs System Shock 2
Played the beginning of Bioshock and instantly hated it. It seems that these kind of shooters aren't really for me, but that would probably go for SS2 as well. (Never played it.)
13. FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer
I play virtually every FIFA. I keep hearing PES is better, but the times I tried it, I didn't see it. Of course, it might just be that I'm not used to PES. I do have to say that the latest PC ports of the FIFA games are basically slaps in the face of a PC gamer, but I don't know if PES is better.
14. DotA vs Heroes of Newerth vs League of Legends
I didn't play any of those.
15. Counter-Strike vs Team Fortress 2
I really like Counter-Strike: Source, but I guess CS 1.6 is okay as well. I tried TF2 and couldn't get over the fact that I suck at it.
16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO
I really don't know. I only played both games a little bit. COD4 with my friends on a LAN party, and Blops with my little brother on his PS3. Blops is probably objectively the better game, but I don't like the console control scheme and it's nicer to play in teams of friends, so I definitely enjoyed COD4 more.

Looking at this list, it appears to me that game quality is probably a far worse indicator of success than the time at which a game hits me, and how good I like the beginning. If I have a lot of free time, it seems I automatically like a game better, and I'm fairly impatient with games if they don't immediately grab my attention.

I want to hand you an award for having read my mind before I thought this thought. But in all seriousness most of the first generations of games were good in their time when tastes were different and wants were easier to satisfy. But this is a new era, but rose tinted glasses never killed anyone did they?

Guess what? You picked seventeen pairs of games which I can't judge, since I haven't played at lease one game in every pairing. The only one I can do is FF7 vs. any other FF, and since I've only played 1-7 minus 3, I can't really judge.

1. Didn't play either.
2. Planescape Torment vs Baldur's Gate 2 - Is there any point in asking? BG 2!
3. Mass Effect 2 vs KotoR 1 - Never played KotoR...
4. Final Fantasy 7 vs any other Final Fantasy (you choose one)
5. Half-Life 1 vs Deus Ex 1 - Any other game, HL would have won, but Deus Ex is the top game evah.
7. Fallout 1 vs Fallout 3 - I only started FO1, so I don't think I'm elligible
8. Gothic 2 vs Morrowind - Morrowind was decent, but still better than Gothic
9. Dragon Age Origins vs Oblivion (with mods and all) - Umm... DAO. Oblivion was good, but not amazing.
10. Metal Gear Solid 3 vs Splinter Cell Chaos Theory - I enjoyed SC quite a bit, as it was one of my first stealthy games, and so I can remember having lots of fun.
11. God of War vs Prince of Persia (the PS2 games)- Never played GOW
12. Bioshock vs System Shock 2 - I liked Bioshock for the plasmids!
13. FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer - Damn football games.
14. DotA vs Heroes of Newerth vs League of Legends - Never played.
15. Counter-Strike vs Team Fortress 2 - Tf2! Definitely!
16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO - MW1

BAZINGA.
Take that.

Alright... *Cracks knuckles* Here goes.

{1} Chrono Trigger, hands down.

{2} Planescape Torment.

{3} Mass Effect 2. (I'm not that deep into Star Wars.)

{4} (Versus any of them) Final Fantasy 7.

The other Final Fantasy games that I like are good, but FF7 was really my first game RPG, and on the Playstation. So, on top of that, it's also the ground-breaker into the new technology in gaming, the massive three-disc game with a story I could get into when I was never into RPGs before then. The combat, the graphics for the time, and everything else. Great stuff. Thanks to Final Fantasy 7, I got into the others, as well as other RPGs (which includes my love of games from Atlus). So, nevermind the nostalgia. This was my entrance into a BIG FUCKING WORLD of gaming.

{5} Half-Life. (I love Freeman's Mind!)

{7?!} Oh, putting a tough call on me, eh? Well, the answer is Fallout 3. Because remember...Fallout 1 had these controlling/bugging problems that were only settled in Fallout 2. And granted, Fallout has a longstanding tradition of buggy software, but you could get trapped behind one of your compatriots FOREVER.

{8} Gothic 2, because...I know about Morrowind and I'm not interested in it.

{9} Probably Oblivion. Minus the Fallout/Oblivion wars, I understand it's a good fucking game, and all the mods sounds like a good deal.

{10} SNAAAAKE!!!

{11} Okay, we all know Kratos is a violent-minded asshole, but we love his bloody violence, and Steve Blum voices Ares, besides. Vote God of War!

{12} Now see, I hear good things about both of these, buuut I understand System Shock 2 (or 1, for that matter) are now next to HARD to get nowadays, and with the recommendations I get for it, it'd be nice to have it because Bioshock is just easier to get. Kind of an 'I want both' answer, but leaning more to SS2.

{13} I...don't really like sports games. They're not games that I play. At least, not since Mutant League Football.

{14} Team Fortress 2, especially since it's the flipping Orange Box. But even if it wasn't, I'd rather have the funny and humorous laid-back FPS multiplayer than the one where everything is just so damn serious.

{15} Speaking of the uber-serious... *Drops a nuke on these choices from orbit* ...It's the only way to be sure.

16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO

Those are all match-up I can currently think of that are somewhat well balanced.
Sorry about the quoting, just need a good way to see the whole thing. Can't speak for most, though, since I haven't played both sides.

Between PS:T and BG2? The former, no contest. Best story ever.

FF7 is one of the better games in the series... but against FF9, it loses. And possibly 6 too.

Deus Ex tops HL1, though both have many flaws.

Bioshock vs SS2 is an interesting one. Bioshock, in my opinion, has a better story. System Shock 2 is far, far scarier. Really, as similar as they are, it's a bit of a case of apples and oranges.

2. Planescape Torment vs Baldur's Gate 2 <- oh man, that's close. Planescape had better writing, but BG2 was more fun
3. Mass Effect 2 vs KotoR 1 <- loved KOTOR, but the Mass Effect series is lots more ambitious/epic
5. Half-Life 1 vs Deus Ex 1 <- Deus Ex. So much freedom, and cooler plot
7. Fallout 1 vs Fallout 3 <- Fallout 3 for its endless mods. Fallout 2 and 3 is a closer match
9. Dragon Age Origins vs Oblivion (with mods and all) <- Dragon Age. It's not even close.
15. Counter-Strike vs Team Fortress 2 <- Counterstrike for endless hours of zombie mode back in the day
16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO -- MW 1 for coherent, non-idiotic plot and imo smoother gameplay

9. Dragon Age Origins vs Oblivion (with mods and all) : Mods were so much fun but definitely a close match overall
15. Counter-Strike vs Team Fortress 2 : Mind implosion
16. Call of Duty MW 1 vs Call of Duty BO : Neither is really better in my mind but MW1 was less abusive in the multiplayer.

Let's see..

2. Planescape Torment - The choice is clear. The story and characters are just far more interesting.
3. Mass Effect 2 - ME2 got rid of most of the unneeded DnD luggage, there's more action, the characters are more interesting and the choices aren't simply "Peaceful Saint" vs "Baby-kicking Maniac".
5. Deus Ex 1 - Far more interesting story, non-linear gameplay, RPG elements, a protagonist with an actual personality - a far more superior game.
7. Fallout 1 - Don't have much to say, the games are vastly different and I prefer the original one.
9. Dragon Age Origins - Again, clear choice. The story wasn't the very best but still superior to Oblivion's one. Interesting characters, far more believable world, less bugs.. In all fairness, though, I never liked any Bethesda's games.
11. Prince of Persia - Depends. Do you mean particular games or the series as a whole? I guess PoP wins overall because of SoT strong story and characters but without it I think I'd choose GoW.
15. Team Fortress 2 - Unique art style and characters vs 'realistic' brown dudes fighting against terrorists? The choice is easy.

3. Mass Effect 2 vs KotoR 1 (KotoR 1 was good, but ME2 was just better and original)
4. Final Fantasy 7 vs all other FFs (it's just the most cohesive whole of all FF to me)
5. Half-Life 1 vs Deus Ex 1 (the bosses and flow of the game were great)
7. Fallout 1 vs Fallout 3 [Fallout 1 had better design. F3 was good, but wasn't brave and crazy enough for me]
8. Gothic 2 vs Morrowind [Though Morrowind is great, Gothic 2 was just more alive and sucked me in more]
10. Metal Gear Solid 3 vs Splinter Cell Chaos Theory [Snake over Fisher, any day of the week]
11. God of War vs Prince of Persia [a tie]
13. FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer (a close one. Overall PES is superior. But the last generation wasn't as good as FIFAs)

5. Half-Life, fair and square.
9. DA:O, for sure.
13. Nowadays FIFA on every area, clearly.
15. Counter-Strike: Source. Eazy.

Number 6 is pure madness.
