Too Human on the xbox360. The setting is soo f'ing good and the armor looks nice for a change (with hooks and pointy bits and bad-ass helmets) but the gameplay fucked it up. Not to mention the "angel from the sky" thingie.

-Dark Void is the obvious one. Jet packs are awesome. Generic plots, uninteresting characters, and massive frame rate issues are not.

-Modern Warfare 2. It was the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4, in which Infinity Ward proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that modern military shooters can be intelligent, original, and compelling; I know they can do better than this. There are just so many other themes related to warfare that they could have fleshed out with this game, but they decided to go with generic Cold War paranoia and random explosions instead. It really is a shame.

-Grand Theft Auto IV. It's still good, but I feel they kind of missed the point of a sandbox game here. There should have been more hijinks to get into besides just murdering people and getting drunk with Packy. If they were that opposed to giving the player true sandbox freedom, then why did they make it a sandbox game in the first place? They could have made it more linear and the only result would have been a tighter game.

-Resistance 2. If they'd just kept the gameplay the same as in Resistance 1 and not made it more CoD-like, this game would have been so awesome. As it stands, it's just a kind of okay game.

-And here's where I'd say "Dead Space," but the potential did eventually get used up in Dead Space 2. So, yay for Visceral.

Star Wars Galaxies.

If you've played it, especially preNGE and preCU, you know what I'm talking about.
If you've never played it, it would take way too much text to fully explain why. It's an MMO, after all.

Ending there would make this post a pointless contribution, so here's a quick synopsis:
SWG was a rather unique Star Wars game in that it did not cast the player as some legendary hero or villian. The game [for a while] did not even let you start as Jedi. Instead, players were simply rank-and-file Joes from the cantina. Players could choose to abstain from combat entirely and instead focus on crafting and mercantile professions. When you saw another player in a city, you really couldn't be sure what they were up to. You couldn't say "this person is level X, so they will go grind Y mobs for XP now." Everyone had their own goals, their own plans, their own agendas.
This kind of world brought a whole different vibrance and perspective to the Star Wars universe. For once we got to see and experience what a 'normal' life would be like, without lightsabers or Jedi or Sith.

Unfortunately, this world was also buggy, unbalanced, and devoid of content. SOE's execution of this brilliant idea was nothing short of horrific. The execution was so bad that it scared developers away from using the game's concept in other titles.

Fun Fact: The wasted potential of SWG sparked a 25 page thread on Penny Arcade [http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=83801] discussing the same topic as this thread.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

It has arguably the best first-person slasher combat ever made, so much so that games such as Oblivion should be embarassed.
Bethesda aquired the developers for Dark Messiah (Arkane Studios) to work on Skyrim combat.

gta 4. It had the brilliant graphics and the ps3/360 memory and tech. It could have been so good, had they not made all of the vehicles control like shit, removed all traces of colour except for brown and made the missions shit. Gta 3, Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories and Red Dead Redemption were all way better, and actually fun.

Gonna go with Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin's dual character system. It seems like such a great idea, but aside from your 'early' game double jump ability and a couple 'and now you stand on this switch while I go over here' bits, it's mostly forgotten aside from being a 'stance change' mechanic for 'now I use magic instead of physical'.

Far Cry 2 definately had a huge amount of potential, 3 has the potential (if they've improved it enough) to be the next, best FPS around.

Mirrors edge is the one that pops up for me, it had so much it could have offered but it just didn't work in the end. I stand by the fact that it's art design and direction is possibly the best I've ever seen in a game.

I'm gonna avoid the obvious digs and go with something most probably haven't thought of: Marvel vs Capcom 3.

---

Story - The developers were basically blowing themselves over the "fact" that the game was to feature a prominent and cohesive story written by some of the Marvel's top writers. Not only was it non-existent, you actually have to buy the CE that came with a mini-comic in order to understand anything, and it still doesn't make sense.

Characters - I'm not knocking the cast list too much (Trish and MODOK? really?), but there are more than a few forgotten heroes on both sides that would've been welcome additions to the cast (well... I definitely would've liked to see Blade, Luke Cage, Gene, and maybe even the return of Hayato Kanzaki and Ruby Heart).

Gameplay - Don't get me started on this one. Long and short there are too many things about the game engine that don't make sense, from forced recoveries to the immediate lack thereof to X-Factor mode. A lot of bizarre and outright bad decisions on Capcom's part.

Music - This is pretty polarizing. To make things easy, I'll simply say that if you liked the music from the SF4 series, you'll probably enjoy the remixes and original tracks featured. Otherwise... grab yourself a personal playlist, preferably of the character's original themes (Ryu's being one of the worst).

Graphics - This is my biggest gripe, although it's also probably the most superficial. Another thing that was heralded was the lack of simple "palette swaps" when it came to characters, and that each character was getting new outfits based on how they appeared throughout the respective universes. While for some characters simple alternate color palettes couldn't really be helped (i.e. most of the Capcom characters), for some others there's really no excuse (i.e. Storm, Dante, Wolverine). Considering that Capcom went from 2d sprites to 3d models, this just shows a lack of trying.

All in all, it's a good game as is, but there are many things keeping the game from being great.

Black and white is one of my favorite games of all time. It is generally unique, with no other game really matching its style or gameplay. Unfortunately, it had prettymuch no replay value, and the enemy gods were sorta weak. It had so much room for improvement.

But peter Molyneux does not no how to make a sequel. He turned his utterly unique god game into a city planner, with absolutely no challenge to be had. He downplayed the power of being a god into having the power to construct an expansive suburb. wherever there was complexity or challenge in the original, they replaced it with blandness and simplicity. That game was the biggest disappointment i have ever found in a game. I truly wish it never existed.

Assassin's Creed. The amount of value modders could find in that world, with that animation, combat and parkour system, boggles the mind. And all they did with it was a short series of missions interspersed with unskippable cutscenes, shitty story and time-traveling.

Constantinople will be rad, though.

Brink for most potential story.
can't agree more. Gaa, had they just paid more attention to the story it could've been so good.
Ever seen the old Container city trailers from a few years back at the end there's a cut scene it had depth and interesting characters i wish that had made it into the final produced.

More recently, Brink.
That game could've been so good.

I was expecting a bigger story approach and mission diversity, like a mission where i'm escaping with intel or something as resistance and have to do a bunch of parkour without any combat.

The Hobbit XD got it for christmas one year, it had some fairly good gameplay elements and sneaking sections, but has also the horrible "if you're caught YOU DIE" approach to it, and combat sometimes felt like i was controlling a drunk rat. it also didn't do TOO bad with the story.

also: probably Never Winter nights 2, it just...dropped the ball, hard, on its pelvic reagions.
