Yes, well once a woman went missing and they found her corpse decades later where it had been all along.... In her apartment in front of her tv...I'm not making this up. So yeah, I'm not freaking out over how obsessed gamers are and BTW the staff of the place didn't notice either.

So, she paid a decade's worth of rent in advance and her landlord never came by to do maintenance/inspections?

Not sure if this was mentioned before but the article says "He was rigid on a chair with his hands stretched out towards the keyboard and mouse", then hypothesizes that he may have died to a "subsequent heart attack". What I want to know is not why the other people didn't notice but why he himself didn't notice that there was something very wrong with his body -.-".

I guess he was just used to.....

Feeling Rong!

But srsly, can't you feel a heart attack coming on? I mean, most people clutch their chest at the very least if they feel it happening don't they?

Knowing the interior of a Chinese wangba (Internet Café) and its frequent customers all too well, and assuming that Taiwan is no different, I am not at all surprised. Nobody is in more dire need of "getting a life" than Chinese (including Taiwan) teenagers and young adults. Alas, society works against them on that part, leading to serious addiction to games.

Honestly, the brain will dismiss what's not obvious unless it's searching for it. The smell of decay? In modern society people are hardly exposed to it; people would've thought something smelled awful and carried on. Motionless guy? Maybe, but were they looking close enough to notice? And remember, it's not like someone sat next to him for the full 9 hours. To others he'd have been 'that guy who was there when I arrived'.

Reminds me of an article I read on some dead swimmers on a beach in Italy. Apparently it was shameful that nobody cared that they were enjoying themselves next to two drowned corpses. Except they'd been placed on the beach and covered with towels; people likely though they were just two people lying on the beach being a bit odd. We think 'that's strange, but whatever' and carry on.

Yes there are terrible incidents where people collapse and die in broad daylight while people watch, but this isn't one of them. There was barely any reason for anybody to check the man closely when he appeared to be doing what everyone else was. And if anyone should have, it was the owners, not random passers-by. I'm just seeing hypocrisy; do any of us check every person they see sitting in a stationary car to be sure that they aren't dead, or every guy on a bench in a busy park? Thought not.

Ernest Cavalli is blowing this very much out of proportion. Has he ever been in an Asian LAN cafe? I doubt he has. I have and I can say that these places get pretty crowded. If you have 100 people in a LAN cafe, all wandering around, smoking, drinking, talking, it's quite clear how someone sitting in such a position could easily be missed. Perhaps Mr. Cavalli is trying to get a job with the tabloids with his overly dramatic and nonsensicle articles.

Also, what does this have to do with 'survival instincts'? Whoever needed to avoid a lion while in a LAN cafe? I don't know where you live but there are very few lions roaming the streets of where I live. The same can be said about ANYTHING. How about I write your next article for you, Ernest; "People have terrible survival instincts while sitting in Starbucks. They could be hit by a meteor at any moment and they would be too engrossed in coffee to notice. This shows how dehumanised people are whilst drinking coffee".

What nonsense. I really hope you don't get paid for these articles.

Some of you have raised issues of smell. He would be unlikely to give off any smell until around the 70 hour mark. At 9 hours he would still retain some body heat (although probably not much).
Quaidis mentioned the defication upon death. While it does indeed happen it doesn't always happen immediately. If he had recently been to the bathroom he also wouldn't have much to pass out of his bowels. Lets not forget the smell of LAN cafes and nerds in general. Strong smell of stale sweat and takeout food. While I am not 100% sure about Taiwan, mainland Chinese cafes usually allow smoking inside, so these places can get pretty smokey, another reason why people wouldn't notice a smell.
This article was written by a knee jerk author who has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.
Great reporting Escapist. How about you hire me to write similarly bullshit articles?

hey, at least we would be prepared for zombie invasion.

Also, a silently dead gamer and a sleeping gamer does not differ that much. they could have though he fell asleep (and that happens) and just left him there thinking rest will do him good. too bad its eternal rest.

While thinking about this article, I randomly realized something.

Death is not pretty. When something dies, their bowels let loose. This goes for dogs, cats, people, everything. This guy likely crapped and/or pissed himself once letting go after that heart attack.

That alone makes me surprised that someone didn't notice for 9 hours. How badly did that place have to smell for people not to get a whiff of hardcore crap and piss? How unsanitary was that place? Surely someone noticed a puddle around the chair (unless the guy was wearing a diaper).

Then you go into things like rigger and the other intense smells, which takes a while longer. That's likely when someone noticed something was up (unless the place was closing 9 hours later).

So it's not just "30 people sitting around playing games at a LAN cafe don't notice dead guy". It's far, far worse than that.
Well for one the bowels dont let loose instantly. it takes several hours for it to take full effect sometimes. and if hes in a sitting position its possible it didnt go very far to begin with. also this is taiwan. its not "30 people sitting arund play games". its 300 people msot of which are constantly walking around, drinking, eating smoking. you woudl ahve a hard time geting around in that palce due to concentration of people. a person sitting in front of computers with his hands on keyboard and mouse moving or not would not be very noticable. unless his time was up that is.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to join the 'to be fair' chorus. The article makes it sound like he died in the 'gaming position'. Even if there was some 'noise' it could have easily been dismissed as someone 'getting their game on' (c'mon, YOU'VE never made noise while you were frustrated?).

Also people had no real reason to notice him. He wasn't with anybody, the whole point of the cafe is to be transfixed on the screen (i.e. not interacting with the people around you), and likely no one person sat near this guy for the entirety of the 9 hours (would it really be so odd to sit next to someone, finish, and they still be sitting there when you go to leave?)

Had this guy collapsed in a store, where everyone is expected to be standing and moving about, I could understand. But he was slumped in the gaming position at a LAN cafe, what reason would you have to give him a second glance? The only quandary I have is why no one on the staff noticed him for 9 hours, I can understand that their customers are probably not interested in being bothered at regular intervals, but 9 hours is a really long time.

This happened in China?

Don't be surprised. Fucking 2-year-olds get run over in the streets and no one calls the ambulance. You wanna know why? If you're minding your own business then find a corpse and call the cops, YOU get charged with the murder.

and this surprises you? from a country where a baby gets hit multiple times by passing cars at plain day and nobody wanted to stop cause they would be held responsible for funeral charges, this is nothing
What does that have anything to do with whats happening here? And please state your source, where are you getting that story from?

I was thinking the same things. It says that nobody noticed but how easy was if for the people to see other players in there? I think there may be other factors that contributed to this, I doubt it's just as simple as 'no one noticed'

I must admit that people's reaction to this is quite frankly horrible.

That being said, the dude was hardly sensible allowing himself to put himself at risk, especially if he knew he had a heart problem and does highlight how much some people sink themselves into a game.

Must admit though that the original post is very well written and does highlight how serious some people take gaming.
