The stereotype of a gamer is we are fat, lazy, we live in a basement with foam swords and a castle, and can always end up embarrassing ourselves. But I want to know is this true do some gamers really do this or is it just a false stereotype?
Skinny, alternately lazy and energetic, live in a nice house near my university campus...

...No foam swords...

...carbon-fibre daggers coated in isoflexed polymers, and the appropriate scabbards and medieval kit to go with them...

...maybe.

I'm a girl gamer/Economics major that keeps up with games just like any guy. I'll be the gamer mom stereotype in the future, I can feel it.

Well... I don't live in a basement, I'm skinny as hell, I have friends, Not a klutz... In fact, the only stereotype I fit is my utter paleness.

I'm not a fat guy, although I guess I might be a tad lazy. I don't have any foam swords, just a metal one and a wood one. No castle, but that would be cool. I rarely embarass myself, although I'm pretty sure that sometimes, I've embarassed others, mostly my family.

Such a strange stereotype...

Then again, most stereotypes are strange, aren't they?

Fat- HA! I'm 5'10" ish and weight around 145 lbs. ( some call that amazon) most weight is in my chest >.<

Lazy- after chasing around my kids, various martial arts ( non sports jujitsu, kendo) then running, cleaning up after the kids, work etc etc.. I sleep 4 hours or so... so I guess Im lazy.

Live in a basement- The master bedroom is in a finished basement/turned more into a split level.. other than that I OWN the house so throws that out.

Bad hygiene- quite the opposite... I take care of myself

Socially stunted-" faints at sight of opposite sex I'm not always fond of parties, or large gatherings, but I have no issues interacting with anyone at any time....as for the opposite ( or same) sex thing.....Im married with children....yeah, I'm really on edge around potential mates >.>

Foam swords- Well , I have alot of blades around the house...from basket hilts, Sgian Dubh knives, rapiers, irish key swords, celtic one handed broads, tanto, katana, naginata... all of them AUTHENTIC COMBAT READY and sharpened...and none are so much for decoration, all are trained in and part of various activities " though all but one katana were gifts from a friend in japan who sent one for the birth of each child, and a wedding gift...a very traditional way to commemorate a important event... my other katana is for Iai Do kata "
only foam swords are nurf...my spouse, my kids, and myself all have at least one ( in this house nerf wars end arguments)

I basically think I defy the stereotypes... but then again to be honest.. I do know a few who fit it perfectly.

lets see, im an avid gamer, and im: lanky as all hell. tall. almost strange interest in steampunk fashions. i can actually talk to girl and currently have a girlfriend who im not bribing to stay with me with WOW subscription months...she is actually good looking and not fitting the standard "fat and ugly" stereotype for male or female gamers. about the hygene comment, when you have been showering at the same time every morning for the last 11 years or so you arent likely to have bad hygene...generally dont get embarrassed...and seeing as im an aussie, our houses generally dont have basements.

...i would like a foam castle though, but it would have to be the size of a proper castle...

I'm lazy when I'm not under a pressing obligation, and fairly heavyset (6'1", 245 lbs. and dropping), though I'm more generally large than fat.

As for the others, I love bathing, have more-or-less real swords (and what the heck is a foam castle?), and since I live in an area not plagued by windstorms, don't have a basement. As for embarrassing myself...not since I got out of high school, really. I'm not especially social, but I can handle myself just fine.

Last time I checked I played Bass, sung in a choir, and was on the basketball team. Also; I plunk at least 10 hours a week on games.

So the ones that would apply to me are that I am a veeeery lazy person, and everything I do is so embarrassing, I just want to go home and not exercise.

I don't think that I'm that fat...just overweight...and I like to think that it's because of my natural Swedish body structure.

As for the LARPing...is it stereotypical if I don't actually do it, but I wish I did?

sadly the answer is yes
That was enough embarassment for the entire gaming community.
However, I'm 5'11", too thin for my own good, and enjoy having my buddies over playing Halo and such while I enjoy my WoW.

I'm only lazy and stuck in one place because of a broken foot right now, Aside from that I have a very active social life, im the only gamer in my circle of friends, and I am underweight. As for making a fool of myself, you don't need to play games to do that, I was doing that way before I started gaming

I am overweight, but I would never wield foam swords or live in a basement. I can bench 225 and I don't play any kind of sports. I am lazy, now that I think about it, but its mostly due to the crappy Texas Gulf Climate. My room stays clean and organized. I collect Lava Lamps and do not actually have Gold Bling (yes my name is one big grammar mistake). I have all A's and high hopes for being in the top 10% of my class

I am a big computer nerd, but people look at me like I am a jock asshole who just lifts weights all day (which I do sometimes) but the stereotypes don't affect me too much!
