Play to win, but play fair,
Regardless of who's playing, make sure you all have fun.

Well it's subjective, right?

1. Dont ever quit mid-match.
2. NEVER blame your loss on lag (whether its true or not).
3. Give props to your opponent when they deserve it.
4. Tea bagging is alway funny.
5. Winning a deathmatch with 8 or more people doesnt give you the right to gloat.
6. Never kill a teammate.

Those are the rules I find important when playing online.

Gamers don't need any ethics. We're not special.
Everyone needs ethics. It's the LACK of ethics that makes most gamers, I'm going to assume like you, un-ethical, and thus, not special. However, play on XBL, mostly Halo, and you'll find the one with the mic who is quietest, is usually the smartest. Who was it (Confuscious?), who said, "He who speaks knows nothing, and he who knows does not speak."
The quote I remember, and I don't know who said it was, "It's better to say nothing and look smart, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Differ between n00bs and newbies, hate the former respect and help the latter.
the moment that term was co-opted by tech departments and accepted in the corporate work force was the day i stopped using it.

now it seems like a term text chatted by yuppie women after yoga class on the way to starbucks....

ugh

The quote is actually,

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Perhaps thinking of it as a 'code of conduct' would be a better choice of words than 'ethics?'

A code of conduct? Ok.

It is only acceptable to quit in a team game if:
a) You need to go to work/school/dinner.
b) You are suffering severe lag to the point at which you cannot help your team in any way shape or form.
c) Your team really outnumbers the other and you want to even it up a little.
d) The enemy team is doing something completely unsporting to prevent the match from ending.

It is not acceptable to quit if:
a) The round started 10 seconds ago (unless it's for any of the above reasons).
b) Your team didn't score the first point in a game.
c) Your team is outnumbered.
d) You have just been *****-slapped multiple times by someone vastly more skilled than you.
e) You didn't get control of the tank/sniper/rockets when the match started (oh, I've seen it).

MMO/FPS = no spawn camping, no stopping the game with one point left to win so you can get kill points (like in C.T.F. matches and such)

RTS = no blockades on players bases, no messaging spam.

both = dont blame lag for your loss, only gloat when you are sure your opponent is defeated/safely behind.

It is your right and your civic duty to shoot someone who has killed a teammate to get his gun.
a) Even better if he did it in the spawn zone!

It's always OK to launch rockets, the other guys on your team need to be more aware of where your rockets are!

Never kill the builder unit your teammate hides behind your base at the beginning of the match.

Always kill the guy who hides behind the crates at your base at the beginning of the match.

You should not play "Aldaris Remix" with "Nuclear launch detected!" ...especially during an assault.

when gaming, dont wear a hat, your inside, if the tv/computer screen is that bright, then adjust it, and take off that hat.

Jinx is cool, but it is also just a company trying to make money off you, stick with keeping your hard earned/stolen cash to buying actual games, its all right to buy the jinx gear though, the clothes are kind of a waste, like bumper stickers.

Hey, I like Jinx.
I said jinx is cool, I just like their gear only.

telling a newbie alt F4 is how you do that super cool spell was funny the first time, refrain from doing it repeatedly, unless the newbie is a jerk. :)

1. Keep the racial slurs, swearing, sexual innuendo, and general tough talking and harassment to yourself and/or to a minimum, we don't need to hear or read it

2. Take defeats and victories with humility and grace, not bitching or rubbing it in people's faces. It's rude and people will not want to play with you.

3. Don't hack the game or over-exploit a glitch, you'll just suck the fun out of the game if you do.

4. Don't act like a tourney tard before, during, and/or after a for-fun match. Gaming is not serious business.

5. If and when you do lose a match against someone, don't make any lame excuses about how the opponent was using a specific weapon or strategy all the time and it's cheap. Most if not all weapons and/or strategies have specific strengths and weaknesses and can be taken down, just need to think it out and pay attention.

In my personal opinion, I think all gamers should follow these guidelines, but it's almost impossible to try and change people to act more mature, but I won't stop trying to persuade people I bump into online and offline to try and make an effort.

Half of this thread is very intelligent and useful information, the other half is some of the most sarcastic stuff Ive ever read.

Also, if you're having a really loud party at your house, always leave your mic on all the time so the people you're playing with can hear you and will think you are cool.

One rule:

Each person is responsible for everyone's fun.

(Too bad its a rule that pretty much nobody online ever seems to follow.)

This is the best rule I've seen yet. I'm usually the one who ends up not having that much fun online, so due to the lack of people who seem to understand this, I've been nearly exclusively single player for years now... (TF2 is the exception)

Farming and PLing in MMO's does not make you as cool as you think you are.

No parking. No Camping

And if you don't understand how to use a mic (chewing on it, breathing into it, "can you hear me?...hello..hello?? can you hear me?" talking or yelling at your family, feedback, static, or playing shitty music we all don't want to hear) THEN DON'T USE ONE!!!

Same rules or ethics that would apply to RL in a kinder world:

-Whining accomplishes nothing.
-Same for 12-year old insults, except they may cause teams of people (yours and theirs) to focus on killing you (try hurling some of those gems from XBox Live around in a crowded subway or city bus). So I guess that accomplishes something.
-If someone needs help or asks for it, do not yell at them and call them N00bs. If you have time to do that, you have time to help them.
-IT'S A GAME. Repeat this mantra until the neccessary amount of perspective has been achieved for you to have fun.
-Unprovoked backstabbing means the end of your tenure on that team or clan. The end.
