Learn to appreciate the old games (Doom etc)

Some kids these days think that anything less than HD needs a coal-fired computer to run and therefore is below them to play.

Note the difference between newb and noob...
newbs learn... whereas noobs will always be noobs.

How about 'take a few moments to assist a newb'

I play wow , and spending 10 minutes showing someone the basics can save them hours, also chucking em some basic gear and teaching them a skill like mining is far better than just giving em gold, its the old 'give a man a fish' thing.

Generally, someone low level asking for 10 silver, I'll consider it, someone of level 12 asking for 10 gold, I aint even gonna waste my time. (for non WOW players, 10 silver might get some essential item for a low level player, 10 gold is silly money that would only be spent on luxuries)

I agree with 'everyone in a game is reponsible for everyone else's fun' It only takes one utter tool to ruin a good group or team match.

Also, just the wave of negativity in FPS's is tiresome, do you really need to give it all the 'u suck' ' lol you cant aim, quit!' etc?

I'm a TF2 player, and one of the many reasons I play, despite not really being a FPS fan, is that generally the players are good natured, you'll even sometimes get a message for a good or skilled kill, or earning an achievement. Honestly, even if you lost, a simple 'gg' or 'wd' won't kill you, and if you won far too easily, and you KNOW you're good, consider hopping teams to balance things up some.

Personally, I'd rather closely lose a match than steamroller a win in 2 minutes.

My household is one TV between my two gung-ho brothers and I, so I invoke these rules, not so much within the games as while playing them:

"No spite while your middle sister plays her gun-free, brightly-coloured JRPGs and Tacticals."
"I'm holding the controller, I'll play, do, and kill whatever I want in my own special way."

In return, they get this:

"I will not correct The Prince/Otacon/Master Chief's grammar at inappropriate moments."
"I will not shout 'behind you' when you play Condemned."

General Rules:

"Jak's goatee stays on at all times."
"GoldenEye is the best party game ever."

If your voice pitch is 8 octaves higher than anyone else in the lobby, and you aren't a girl. Keep off the microphone, we all like out eardrums, kthx.

If able - No screenlooking, unless you were the victim of screenlooking first. And then, only use it to get the most humiliating kill possible.

If you have a high-pitched voice DO NOT TALK ON A MICROPHONE. Honestly, it has to be the most annoying thing on this earth, short of people actually thinking Dane Cook is funny.

Also, when someone beats you in Call of Duty 4 with a shotgun on one of those really big maps that everybody assumes is for sniping only, don't whine that they're hacking or glitching or some other pathetic excuse for why you lost. Just accept the fact that they beat you with a shotgun on a level everyone thinks is for nothing but long range weapons. That means they are really good with the shotgun. Promise. Thats why it's the only gun they have that has the golden finish (apart from the Desert Eagle, but they give that one to you for free).

Also, don't call a person a 'fag' or '******' or 'gay' because they beat you. Just because that person won does not mean he likes it from behind. It means he's better than you....or he got really lucky that one particular match. Either way, accept it and try to beat him in the next match.

And camping is unacceptable in any way, shape, or form. Period.

Except for sniping, because that kind of camping actually takes some kind of skill to do (generally).

Ironically, I am only 13 and I have a deeper voice than many 15+ that I have played on Xbox Live. I too hate all squeaky voiced, "Swearing every 2 seconds makes you cooler" children.

Always listen to the advice of those with more experience, if misguided, don't continue to do so.

Accept your losses, and strive for victory next game.

Although you may be losing, keep fighting. If you win, the victory will be all the sweeter. :)

Always remember that it's just a game.

Respect other people's interests and beliefs.

And now one from Pure Pwnage:
"Sometimes giving that cover fire is better than getting the headshot."

At the end of the day, it's just a game; there's nothing to get excited over.

Apologeis for my heresy.

wait... so you can be left alone for using that shotgun...

but me and my sniper rifle are 'unacceptable'?

My ethic: Don't go blaming the toolbox, every possible strategy and weapon in a game is fair, if your getting killed alot then perhaps you should change... not your opponent.

People under the age of 15 shouldn't even be allowed near microphones, not that I'm being stereotypical, it's just that they're all like it.
I love you/

You cannot complain about camping when:
- The target was moving, stopped for accuracy to kill you, then moved on.
- The gametype/situation means that you're attacking, they're defending.

You can complain about camping when:
- You're getting spawn-killed by the same guy.

Ooh, what a fascinating topic! Wish I had this topic to reference when I did my BA dissertation on Gamers and Gamer culture. Ho hum.

When it comes to a 'code of ethics', the code is different from any real life code, as what we do in games is consequence free and well, after all, it's just a game. Over the online years there has been a set of 'unwritten rules' that a lot of gamers subscribe to that have developed over the years, some have which have been seen above.

As Gamer who is also a practising Christian, I've often wondered if the morals and rules we use in life cross over to our gameage. I know that some of them don't work- 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' in a CoD4 deathmatch is a surefire way of getting stupidly pwned! That said, some of the unwritten laws I follow are as follows.

* Games are fun. Lets keep it that way.

** Concerning the Mic **

* Swearing. Everyone does it, but do I really need to hear 2 hours of it? No. Shush or be muted. Or kicked.

* Squeaky kids. Same deal. No, I didn't see how awesome your headshot was, I was busy killing things. I DON'T need a running commentary. Shush. (Observation: Why are they all 12 year old Americans?)

* I don't need to hear your German Techno or Marylyn Manson. I really dont need to hear a bass heavy mic warped version of it either. If you're not gonna talk, why have a mic?

** Other Stuff **

* Sniping is Fine, Camping is not. Personally, I dislike Campers and will actively seek them out. I define a Sniper as someone really awesome with a rifle who can pick you off from a mile away then disappear somewhere else.

* Spawn Camping and Weapon Camping = No fun.

* Congratulate those who deserve it, even your enemies.

* Treat the new player with a little respect. They're new, they don't know what's going on. Hard to do in say, a FPS but on an MMO it can make or break a gaming experience. See also my first point. Heck, you might meet them a year later and they might help you out of a real tight spot.

* If you're getting annoyed because you have entered a room of Generals and you are a mere private, move room. In more serious cases of aggravation, go play something single player.

What the hell do you people think is wrong with campers? I don't camp myself, but camping, so long as it isn't spawn/weapon camping is fine. There are plenty of ways to get rid of a camper, so I don't see why you all have so much hate.

Thou shalt not drop out of a DoW multiplayer right at the start and leave me on my own against 3 opponents. You berks. This seems to happen without fail every second match, and the likelihood of my team mate dropping out and how soon into the match they do it seems proportional to how long we had to wait to for someone to make up the numbers- the longer we wait, the sooner they drop out.

Just treat other people like people. That's it. Be sporting, don't insult others, and keep things in proportion. Games are great, but at the end of the day, they're just games.

The world of online gaming could be vastly improved if all players kept ONE thing in mind: Keep your temper in check.

I mean, if someone on the team isn't playing very well, I can understand why that might make the game less fun, but sometimes the reactions are a bit out-of-proportion. So you didn't win the match - boo hoo. Join another server, or start a clan of players you like to play with. Don't just sit their whinging about it.

Sometimes when I play a team-based game, I get the feeling that some of the other players aren't really enjoying the gameplay - they just have an overwhelming desire to win. And winning is fun, sure. But losing in a game is just that - losing in a game. You don't lose money. Your pets are going to die. You're not going to lose your house.

It's just a game. It's just a game!
