I am not aware of this stereotype, and I disagree with it.
But who ISN'T a gamer? it's not socially unacceptable to be a 'gamer' anymore because everyone and their mother is playing CoD and Grand Theft Auto (only god knows why). So by stereotyping 'gamers' you may as well be saying 'males'.
(Don't get up-in-arms, yes there are female gamers but there are most definitely less of you!)

I do. I grew up with blues, as my mom was a blues singer. Johnny Cash was a gateway into some country (OLD country, dark stuff, not this hokey Big and Rich shit), folk music is fine in a given time and place, and my grandfather is a jazz drum virtuoso. If you can't find something in those entire fucking GENRES(there's a lot to them) then damn, you just aren't looking hard enough. These musics you have mentioned are near and dear to me, and there's a hell of a lot more to them than that. Not to mention the fact that the music you like probably owes quite a bit to the aforementioned genres.
I don't believe that my music is the greatest, but I think it is very wide in scope and taste. I abhor this "everything but country and rap" or whatever mentality people have going, which I find can actually be prevalent among gamers, and highly dangerous.
I'll admit that my opinion of these genres is heavily influenced by whatever play on the radio, but really? I mean, they keep playing "One bourbon, one scotch, and one beer" or whatever it's called and it makes me want to tear my eyes out. I'll concede that there may be decent blues, folk, country, etc. But I doubt I'll ever hear it on local radio..... which I've since turned off.

Sidenote: I don't hate ALL rap music, just the current popular rap music that revolves around "bread", "hoes", and drugs. Or to quote XZibit "Lyrics must contain more than just clothes, bitches and weed".

I am a gamer in both the video and nonvideo game sense.

In my estimation most of my fellows have shitty tastes in music.

Okay, given I like stuff that is BAD MUSIC, and I like it without a sense of irony. But I know it's bad, I admit it's bad, and unashamed of it.

But then I listen to stuff that is GOOD MUSIC as well. Whether musically complicated, good singing or lyric work and the like.

It's the whole:
Good Good, Bad Good, Bad Bad scale.

For example, I am not particularly fond of Reggae. I can recognize some of the stuff being good music, but that doesn't change my dislike of it.

I do like various iterations of progressive rock. Is it easily accessible to a casual listener? Sometimes, but I enjoy it, but it has to be Good Good.

What I am getting as is that the QUALITY of a particular piece of music doesn't matter to whether people like.

"Just a Friend" by Biz Markie, is a horrible, horrible song. It is also catchy as hell, entertaining, and filled with enough schlocky value that it will crawl up into your skull, curl around your frontal lobe and remain there for most of a week.

And like someone else said, a lot of Gamers go for quirky, which doesn't translate to Good. So, yeah, a lot of the gamers I know have bad taste in music.

Yes, this is indeed a rather pervasive stereotype on music boards. But, let's be honest and counter with our own stereotype: aren't all music nerds really strongly elitist at heart anyway?
Yes let's.

Even though I am a huge music nerd and not an elitist haha

Never heard of this stereotype before, and it's just so rediculous considering everyone has their own taste in music

Case in point, Justin Beaber, if people didn't think his songs are great then he'd never would have become so popular, but 5mins on the net and it's very obivious that a lot of people find his music to be terrible, or just his apperance it gets a bit cloudy something as to which.
In all fairness, you should never underestimate the power of a corporation's marketing department.
It seems like this entire website is full of people who fundamentally loathe the Call of Duty series and everything the series has come to represent and stand for and the business practices that fuel that, yet each installment has sold more than the last (at least since 4, I dunno about the earlier ones..)

How many adverts do you see on TV for "the latest and greatest band!" with quotes from NME saying "album of the year!" and other such hyperbolic statements?
Probably quite a few, with a new "album of the year!" appearing every few weeks.
People buy 'em, said artist disappears off the face of the earth, and the record label has made their money.

Some things are popular because they're well made, but a lot of stuff is popular because we're told it is, and then we make it so, leaving the cycle to repeat..
That a very good point, although I'm not at all a part of that as I never make an opinion about any movie, song or game unless I've either played it, watched a friend play it, or it have been recommend to me by someone of similar tastes to me. For, example I love CoD 4 and MWF:2 but I hate Black Ops because IMO it has such a shitter story and is too patriotic for my taste.
Indeed, that is a good direction to take! I don't really go out of my way searching for new things anymore, I tend to let recommendations from those who are of a similar mindset to myself steadily roll in.. :)
Although occaisionally I take a gamble and end up stumbling upon gems, such as Demon's Souls and The Witcher 2... Especially The Witcher 2... :D
I know I do the same and find gems such as Batman: arkham asylum and Fallout:new vages, but then there is the down side when I bought FF XIII :p

Music is just too subjective

and Im quite amazed at the ignorance alot of people display when it comes to music,

ESPECIALLY those who proudly proclaim how all rap or "mainstream hits" music is crap while wanking off to their ACDC or the like (though to be fair I find stuff I like in the charts to be rather slim pickings...and even then it loses its apeal faster)

Im not saying rap is to everyones taste but there is good stuff out there (I have recently discovered the awsomeness of Sage Francis)

I listen to Heavy Metal (Mostly Iron Maiden and Amon Amarth). But who's to say that's "bad taste in music"? Anybody who goes to say that that's a bad taste in music is just one of those music elitists who think that X genre is complete crap and that only the music they listen to is good music. Kinda like all those guys on youtube vids making posts about Rock/Metal rebellion and stuff.

How did we get to six pages of 'I don't know what you're talking about' interspersed with 'I'm definately talking about something', a seasoning of 'What are you talking about exactly?' and a healthy pinch of 'Something, obviously.'

I like a lot of different types of music. This "stereotype" comes from the same people who believe gamers have no life, whilst they go on about their girlfriend collection and their taste in charts music. Very shallow people.

Hmmm. I haven't even heard of this one, so hard to give an opinion. But music taste is so abstract anyways. Easy to get arguments from this one. Same as saying "console users are all morons for having platform taste" i.e. pointless argument as opinions are always individual.

It's not true. Every gamer I know likes AC/DC. Can you honestly say it's bad music?
Thats a silly question. Yes of course I can.

OT: Most gamers I know do have a bad taste in music, but seeing the amount I know is a small demographic I can't really say anything except, most gamer friends I know have a bad taste in music. I am open minded about music I like anything from classical to techno, but most gamers I know are into Avenged Sevenfield, Eminem and Katy Pary.

Hoo boy. Radio is about your worst enemy when it comes to getting exposure to new music. Properly used, a site like Last FM can actually be really good for showing you new music.
Country-wise, I at least recommend some Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Then...I dunno. Your tastes will take you wherever they take you. Have fun, and happy music-ing.
Oh, and XZibit sounds like maybe the smartest man in the biz. I think I'm gonna check some of that out.

Going off what people tend to post here on the escapist, most gamers seem to go for one of a sub-sub-genera of metal. Oh yeha man i lerve me some thrash and death metal but black metal man that stuff is stupid.

Personally, I prefer harvest folk metal.

I'm a gamer, and I used to listen to heavy metal and the stereo typical 'gamer music' taste, but now I listen to a multide of things, from the Beetles to Stones, Ryuichi Sakamoto to Johnny Cash and beyond, while I do agree a majority of gamers have 'bad taste' in music ( and I only say this as most I know REFUSE to listen to anything beyond Pantera, ) it only portrays the wider gamer community because these are the people you see the most of, thusly we're all tared with the same brush. Pity really.

I dunno, music is opinion based in my opinion I have fantastic taste in music. I like Jazz, blues, metal, classical, folk, electronica, rock, some electronic pop, some indie acoustic, punk, power metal, prog rock, hip hop and a lot of musical theatre.

I hate pop because can't stand most stuff on the radio, most dubs step and rap is pretty much on my list of dislike but only due to the extremely low quality of the majority of the genre

Tool sucks. The fact that you listened to that pretentious nu-metal shit more than Nobuo Uematsu makes me sick. And The Killers? Radiohead? This to me is not just crappy taste, but terribly unadventurous. I feel for the gamer populace if you represent the whole. JUDGED.
Everything you typed sounds like regurgitated elitist "arguments".

Tool is nu-metal. OK.

And I have a lot more Nobuo Uematsu listens, not everything I listen to scrobbles/is after I got my last.fm.

Last time I listened to The Killers is... I don't even remember. Not every band has to be deep/innovative, I used to listen to them when I wanted to listen to something catchy, fun, easy on the ears. I don't listen to the radio at all so I have no idea what's cool to listen to and what is "radio trash", sorry. I also listen to Coldplay sometimes *giving you more ammo*

idk on what basis you think my taste is unadventurous, I personally think I listen to a wide variety of music. Oh, I don't listen to any obscure, pretentious, never heard of bands that only you and the band themselves know exist, yeah. Or the abstract soundtrack to the art-school handy-cam abstract film that is only available on VHS.

I feel for the gamer populace if you represent the whole.
