I think the real stereotype we should be discussing is fisherman who have terrible taste in bathrobes
OT: I have never heard of this stereotype and how can you take a whole group of people and say they have bad taste in music? you don't know what music they like

There is no good or bad taste... What is this crap? Taste is taste.
Agreed. While there is Good and Terrible music, it shouldn't be our place to judge another person on their taste.

Trust me, I've heard bad music from all the ages and I really want to forget alot of it.
Again, there's no bad or good music, just music you like and music you don't. But whatever .-.
Oh no... there's bad music. Playing music and composing music is a skill as much as any art form, and there's a reason the word 'technique' exists.

But... there's no bad forms of music. There are bad implementations.
Thank you. That's what I was implying in my statement.

I am a gamer.

I enjoy Avenged Sevenfold.

Therefore, gamers do not have bad taste in music.
How can something with a skull-bat for a symbol possibly be a bad band?

I've never heard the stereotype that gamers have bad taste in music. Maybe they think we all listen to chiptune or something, which can have a pretty narrow audience.

I enjoy all kinds of things, mainly progressive rock/metal.

So I get all kinds of mixture in my music with that.

It's not true. Every gamer I know likes AC/DC. Can you honestly say it's bad music?
I despise AC/DC, and hell yes i'd say they're bad music. Even they admit they've made 1 album 20 times.

OT: I've never heard this "stereotype" before. At worst, i'd say there are too many metalheads and screamo fans among gamers. Even then, it could be worse. At least they're not Bieber fans.

I find Metalheads to have a bad taste in music because they for some reason find other types of music to be "inferior" and close off there music pallet. A lack of variety to me, is a the closest you can have to a bad taste in music.
I admit that I am a metalhead. In self-defense, I'd like to give you the top 25 songs on my iPod. Is this okay?

Duality - Slipknot
Day After Tomorrow - Younnat (Who did stuff for The Escapist)
3 AM - Poets of the Fall
People = S#!t - Slipknot
Misery With A Delicate Voice - Beneath the Sky
7861 - Beneath The Sky
War - Poets of the Fall
Everything is Everything - Phoenix
Calling - The World Ends With You OST
Summertime - Sex Bob-omb
Younnat's DIY Doorbell sampler - Younnat
Diamonds for Tears - Poets of the Fall
Run Run Run - Phoenix
This is Exile - Whitechapel
Reloaded - Winds of Plague
For Each Remembered Name - Beneath the Sky
Gravel Road - Clutch
Pulasky Skyway - Clutch
(sic) - Slipknot
Respect for the Dead - Beneath The Sky
Pure Rock Fury - Clutch
White's Ferry - Clutch
Sleep - Poets of the Fall
Miss Impossible - Poets of the Fall
What's Up People - Maximum the Hormone

If you listen to at least one of the songs by each artist, you should see how varied I can be :3

I favor metal, sure, but I never close off my music choices.

On topic: I think gamers, like anyone else, have their own taste in music.

What's wrong with metalheads though?

Erm, can either of you post links to a board post or blog that illustrates this stereotype? I frequent some music boards and blogs and I've never come across anything like that.
Unfortunately I cannot give you any links (typical eh?), because the most obvious example I know of is the board for the group of people I actually make music with in real life and that is a private board. Unfortunately, despite my defenses for gamers on there, they still consider me the exception to their stereotype, rather than both music and games being unconnected when it comes to taste. I must say in all honesty, on public boards, I've not been able to find much in the way of stereotyping against gamers. Still, the stereotype does exist among music-minded folk, otherwise I wouldn't have to defend myself to them as both a music lover and a gamer ;).

Yes, this is indeed a rather pervasive stereotype on music boards. But, let's be honest and counter with our own stereotype: aren't all music nerds really strongly elitist at heart anyway?
Yes let's.

Even though I am a huge music nerd and not an elitist haha
As you probably grasped from the rest of my post, the same goes for me ;).

To clarify: i'm not opposed to all metal. But most metalheads i've met won't listen to anything unless it has the most growly, screamy "singing" and the grindingest guitars imaginable. Personally, i do like prog-metal and speed metal, but i've never been a fan of thrash, death, or black, which seem to be the predominant sub-genres among gamers.

I'm not like that at all, I'll listen to any music, provided it's taken some talent to create. I listen to Metalcore, Hardcore type stuff, and I love it. I also love Rap, D&B, Dubstep, Dance, Trance...

I don't know a single 2 people who's music tastes are EXACTLY the same. So I'd pretty much say any music stereotype is wrong.

"Terrible" is too harsh. Let's say different, like, a stereotypical gamer (In a lot of cases) will be a fan of heavy metal.
I guess it's accurate-ish.

Call of Duty players (the ones that frown upon any game other than CoD) tend to listen to pop culture music whereas "true" gamers listen to....god knows what....

I just now realised this sterotype was true when you said it. And you're talking to a gamer who is wearing a Journey T shirt right now

Do you believe this stereotype is true? Not true? Why?

Would you like to add examples to the contrary?

I for one don't believe it is true. I've seen gamers with good taste in music and bad taste in music. But it is all subjective anyway.
I file it under "Italians are obsessed with watermelon" and "Irishmen make excellent accountants." That is to say, I file it with all the other fake stereotypes people have pulled out of hats for the sake of argument.

NOTE: Please read the OP and don't just read the title and assume I'm ignorant.
Jesus, what's with all the "Don't just look at the title, read my post before you judge me" crap? I know the whole judging a book my its cover whatnot, but when you're deliberately making the cover inflammatory to attract attention, I don't give a toss what's beneath the cover: I'm going to judge the shit out of you.
