This is BS. If anything, gaming has INCREASED the likelihood of me going to university.

I would like to know what exactly constitutes "frequently" for the purposes of this study. I've found that most "nerd" gamers tend to also read a great deal and go to college. Now I can see the games effecting overall grades due to distracting them from their studies but I don't feel it has an impact on going or not.

I belive it depends on the person, like how they handle their time management with homework and other things, in this case games.

But for me i have actually been playing games ever since primary school and i have rarely handed anything on time because i was always and still am playing games (im in year 12) instead of doing homework... also it has lead me into not getting an ATAR, so i cant go to uni straight after high school, but i don't blame the games i blame myself for getting lazy and distracted :/

The article is almost completely pointless. First, it doesn't at all acknowledge that reading for pleasure and playing games are not mutually exclusive; people can fit both into their lifestyles. The following sentence clearly references kids who ONLY play games AND do nothing else:

Playing computer games regularly and doing no other activities meant the chances of going to university fell from 24 per cent to 19 per cent for boys and from 20 per cent to 14 per cent for girls.
Well, yeah, if I only play Mousetrap all day AND don't read books, my chances of going to a university are also severely lessened. What's your point?
Exactly how i feel. I love that mousetrap line.

inb4 the crowd of people who will say anything to trivialize a study that isn't in favor of gaming before turning around to quote any that are.
This.

Seriously, this is so fucking stupid. Video games don't need defending. Not like this, anyways. Stop jumping to its defense every time you hear something remotely negative about it. It's creepy. Stop it.

So....Video games are...DISTRACTING?

STOP THE PRESSEEEEES!!!!!!!!!

...No really. Tell us something we don't know.
Well with everyone here trying to jump to the defense of their sacred fucking pastime, it seems they really don't know.

I'm finishing my university education right now.

And back at school my dad would go like "no more games until your grades improve" they wouldn't improve and he'd be like "play those games if you want, as long as your grades improve"

And 1st year at the university I was already a straight A student, while playing games. Not MMOs or online games mind you.

I actually treat games like books or movies. Read/see it then maybe re-read it if you want.

I study theoretical physics at uni and game a lot. Infact, I can't think of anyone on the physics course who isn't at least a little into gaming. I'd like to see them break this down by subject. I imagine the mass prevailence (sp?) of gamers in science and engineering is countered by arts and humanities not being into it.

My only hobby is playing games and I go to university to study law. My gaming-friends also have no real other hobbies and (really successfully) study Economiy-ish stuff and Engineering.

Going to university is not for everyone and is not a prerequisite of intelligence.
This, a thousand times this. I mean I can see where they're coming from, but teaching is just going to evolve and people will get use to learning with only computers.

Half my classes are traditional, and the other half are contemptible homework due every night online plus other crap classes. Personally I like the 4 tests system, but I also enjoy reading.

counting that done in school, I read about 4 hours a day, I also average about 4 hours of some form of video/computer game a day. Do they cancel out then? Also, what about text based games like Zork, is that reading or playing a video game? I play those often too, I'm probably one of the youngest people that still enjoy those games.

I read books and play games, I have the choice of going to University yet despite what other people are saying I will not go, the job im after doesn't require a University degree and can pay more than plenty of jobs that do, also the lack of student debts will work in my favour. Oh and also the job im after isn't an easy one, I have the ability and qualifications for it just from attending college.

Also from what I have heard from many different people some university students are actually dropping their degrees of their CV's because it actually makes it harder for them to find a job.

Hmm.. that sounded pretty off-topic.. what im getting at is University doesn't really matter so much as it once did, this study is fairly insignificant in today's world.
