Im looking for games that people consider cult classics. I use this phrase although to me its always ment: Games that are considered classics although missed by the wider gaming community.

Obvious ones would be: Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Earthbound

but I also consider Arcanum, Vampyre the Masqurade, Eternal Darkness, American McGees: Alice

Please help me out with other games. All of these are some of my favorite games and there must be others out there that ive missed the experiance off

Planescape:Torment
Psychonauts
Beyond Good & Evil
Everything Shin Megami Tensei (well, maybe 90%)

The first 3 are my favorites, and the most offensive in the fact that they are so ignored. Though I'm sure most people here have played them.

Arcanum definitely. STALKER, arguably. Metal Fatigue, I know few people who have played it besides me, most of them revere it.

The Penumbra games, day of the tentacle, grim fandango. Admittedly i haven't played the last two. I think the Myst games used to have a pretty big select following. Try looking up some indie games, they tend to end up being labelled with the title 'cult classics'

Alan Wake will be in a few years. Dunno why no one has played/bought it. One of the best and unique gaming experiences I've had in a while...

Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future, the second being my third-favorite game of all time.

Moder Warfare 2 by far one of the most under-rated games of the current gen.....

HA!

In all seriousness go grab a copy of Killer 7, though not completely obscure, it was missed by quite a lot of people. Also If you can find it I still think Total Annihilation never really got the glory it deserved even though it's fantastic!

Would Shining Force, Ogre Battle, or Vandal Hearts be considered cult classics? I know each of these games has a very popular sequel but I don't know how many people played the originals here.

Phantasy Star Online, I know of a couple people who play it, and I still play it from time to time.

I have played and completed the first 3 and Planescape:Torment should be forced onto anyone interested in proper RPGs. But Shin Megami Tensei I have never heard of and after a quick scan of Wikipedia I may have to look into getting one of the versions

Don't get me wrong, I love both of these games, but weren't they both fairly decent successes when they were released?
From it's release in 98 up to 03, Grim Fandango sold 90 000 copies in the US. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grim_Fandango] Not exactly what I'd call a huge success.

With System Shock they were both released in a horrible bad time. 94 was Doom all the rage and no one cared of a competent FPS. 5 years later Half-Life was going strong and people were waiting for Quake 3 and UT.

No, Grim Fandango only gained popularity years after it's release. It came at the end of the Adventure Game boom and was almost universally overlooked.

The critics loved it yes. They ranked it as best game of '98 next to Half Life. But nobody bought it. It has only recently become popular amongst a select group of gamers.
