I think Freelancer was missed by the bulk of the Sci-Fi gamer population due to the long time it took to release it. If it had been more popular, a sequel probably would have materialized.

[sub][small]Yes, I do have to mention Freelancer every third post. So sue me.[/small][/sub]

I think to a general gamer you'd get the "WTFAYTA" response. I would say System Shock 2 made a bit of noise around its release where Grim Fandango didn't until it got reviewed.
Honestly, I'm actually getting pretty tired of hearing about System Shock 2... you know, I had never even heard of it until BioShock. Now I hear about it constantly... it's becoming a Psychonauts where it's constantly called "underrated" so many times that it becomes overrated...

If you've heard of this game, you are awesome and should change your name to Alexander.

I agree with this to an extent. I've played a lot of SMT games and I can call none of them bad. While I wasn't a fan of Digital Devil Summoner I consider the games from this series classic.

The Tales of series and Disgaea series get overlooked by a lot of RPG fans I know too so I pick them as well.

The first 3 are my favorites, and the most offensive in the fact that they are so ignored. Though I'm sure most people here have played them.
I have played and completed the first 3 and Planescape:Torment should be forced onto anyone interested in proper RPGs. But Shin Megami Tensei I have never heard of and after a quick scan of Wikipedia I may have to look into getting one of the versions
If you are the Persona series is the easiest to get hooked with. Pick up Persona 4 or if you're into slightly more of a challenge and want a better story get Persona 3. You'll enjoy them.

These two are some on the PC. Some other ones would be System Shock 2, Uplink, Beyond Good and Evil, The Void (I think, it's probably the best game I have ever played yet) and Penumbra.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
The Darkness

Surprisingly, both aren't very popular games. The Darkness was intriguing for a lot of people when it came out, but was overshadowed by Bioshock, and is probably a cult title right now. It has one of the saddest moments in gaming (1/3rd of the way through the game, you know which scene I'm talking about!), had a really intriguing story and some interesting combat mechanics. Escape From Butcher Bay is a title that went surprisingly unnoticed when it was released despite being an excellent shooter with top end graphics on the original Xbox (which is a recipe for success), and I think it also deserves the cult status. To this day, no other game has combined stealth, shooting and FP fighting so well. And you got to kill Xzibit. Twice.

Or even better by the same studio the Age of Wonders series. Odds are if you've heard of this game you love it.

Phantasy Star 1,2,4. None of that Online crap.
Shining Force Series
Sparkster (Genesis/SNES)
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (Never reached the U.S. unless you had Sega Channel)
Parasite Eve series

I'm not sure I'm exactly saying cult classics, I just know most of these games I've never seen mentioned around my friends or online often.

I agree with you to a point. The original games in all of these franchises (Fallout 1 and 2, elder scrolls 1 and 2, arguably god of War) are cult classics. But Fallout 3 is most definitely not, especially consiedering all the awards and critical acclaim it recieved after release. Oblivion and arguably Morrowind have been very popular as well. God of War 3 is incredibly well known. I do agree that Silent Hill 2 is a cult classic.

I'm going to pitch the original Resident Evil games as well, very underappreciated I have found. The series only really became known after RE4's success.

You consider God of War and silent hill a Cult games? Fallout 1 and 2 I totally agree on though, awsome games. Fallout 3 was awsome as well but I wouldnt call "cult" it sold very well and is very popular

The Void is somewhat hard to describe for me, so investigate a little bit more. It's definitively an art game, probably the most serious one yet. I'd recommend you check it out NOW!
As for Penumbra, I haven't really finished, but it's a horror game based on the works of HP Lovecraft, and it's like an adventure game but it's on first person and most of the objects in the world can be manipulated, like, say, the grav gun from Half Life, although you need to get close to interact with them. it's a great game, but I cannot fully recommend it yet, as I haven't finished it.

Overlord is a Dungeon Keeper wannabe, too stuck on mass appeal to really allow the player to really be evil.

Dungeon Keeper is a cult classic (cult classics essentially having niche content).
Fallout 1 & 2 are cult classics, as well.
River City Ransom (aka Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari in Japan) is another one.

Not sure how big it was when it was released, but no one I've ever talked to (in person) knows about X-COM.

Darkstalkers is an amazing fighting game with a really unique cast of characters.

Sadly, outside of the character Morragan, no one really knows about the series.

You mean I'm NOT pumped to play as Hsien-Ko in MvC3?

It's a shame they're not including Talbain. What a badass.

I wouldn't be too tired of it if I could play it. Vista flat out refuses.
