Thankyou :) it's always nice to see other Vincent D'Onofrio fans :D
Here's another one! I was so sad when he left Law and Order.

OT:

Someone mentally bent enough to make the kinds of claims this woman did on national television are not going to be swayed from their delusions by silly things like facts, statistics, and evidence. She's actually doing her own agenda of vilifying games a disservice by being such a terrible liar that perhaps we should...thank her?
Vincent D'Onofrio is coming back to Law & Order! I was so happy when I heard the news.

OT: Like I said before, I believe she saw it as free publicity for her book. When I heard that a lot of people gave one star reviews I found it funny, but I am just a big believer in ignoring people like her. She is not an expert, and for someone like her to make the claims that she did, was crying for attention in my eyes. The most harmful thing you can do to her is to just ignore her and not buy into her unique brand of psychology, at least, thats what I think.

Is anyone else reminded of the case of that other exaggerated statement? Where the mom got upset and traumatized cause she saw her kid coming out of a library with a DS in his hands? We should set these two up. See if they can work out the latest secret. You know, the one about the PS3 root key sequence being translated in coordinates for the Gates Of Hell and stuff...

If you cannot prove your statement, logic implies for you to shut the fuck up.

The point is she's insulting all the people who actually bother to research things like media influences on violence and rape. They put in effort to prove how severe the effect can be and she "doesn't have the time" to even read them?

What a sad and lazy woman. Honestly i hope she ends up losing her job for this, she clearly can't substantiate her claims.

Defamation in form of libel. She is communicating a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give a business and product a negative image. Libel suits happen all of the time. If she is so clearly making implications this serious, that are unfounded my any major studies, but have been claimed to be factual, she is guilty of slander. EA should get their free advertisings worth, then sue the *****. Case closed

Stupider things have gone to court and won
Would not fly in a German court, pretty sure of that. If for no other reason, than because video games in general would not qualify as a "product" as such and as far as I know, she did not actually talked smack about Bulletstorm itself (at least not explicit enough).
But hey, if such things work in the US, EA should have at her.
It's oddly written, I'm not sure if it has been quoted inappropriately:

Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist and book author, told FoxNews.com that sexual situations and acts in video games -- highlighted so well in Bulletstorm -- have led to real-world sexual violence.

?The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games,? she said.

Original Article [http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/02/08/bulletstorm-worst-game-kids/]
It isn't clear whether or not she was specifically referring to videogames in this instance, or if Fox added her quote to give a validity to their hatred, discarding the context in which the quote was originally intended. Either way, I'd seriously be chatting to my lawyers (they're on the payroll, why not use them).

Turns out however, no one, publisher, production or distribution are going to press legal charges. Looks like it's down to the gamers to make an issue of it, once again

Sorry for the further derail, but I had to say thanks for the heads up!
Anytime, glad to be of service :) I think this is the first time I have had a hand in the derailing of a thread :D

People not knowing what they are talking about when it comes to affects of gaming! GASP! (sarcasm)

Some people really need to shut up because they have no idea about gaming and just use it as an easy target, the bigots.

To be honest, just because one of the advocates of this debate turned out to be fraudulent that doesn't mean the argument goes away. I highly doubt it but there is a chance that video games--and I say this soooooooooo tentatively because this is matter of principle, rather than instinct, to me--may cause such tendencies.
However I bet I can find an increase of instances of rape at approximately the same time the Slinky was made, which, using the observational methods of these researchers, makes it the greatest tool of sexual perversion once I publish my thesis on it.

When someone refuses repeatedly to provide sources, especially when the only one they do provide is refuted, it's safe to call Bulls***.

I think the funniest thing was, "Obviously I know what I'm talking about or I wouldn't be called upon to testify in front of Congress." Because, yeah, Congress is a totally unbiased organization and they're all up to speed on the requirements for Due Dilligence and the need for peer-reviewed sources.

I'm surprised that she never even mentioned Rapelay... You'd think that with all the controversy it sparked... ah... nevermind.

It's antics like hers that really bring my blood to a boil. Like damn near all of you, I've developed a great deal of passion for games. It infuriates me when some uneducated snot like her trots around quoting research results and invalid logic against a medium I'm sure she hasn't actually partaken in since Super Mario World.
Dammit, now I'm angry... thanks...

The very same thing happened with R rated movies, certain books, and heavy metal. You've got these crusading single mothers and elderly men who are determined to get it banned without any thought about what it actually is. "Think of the children!" They cry.

In time, this'll fade over. And given what the subject of her books are about, she's got no idea what she's talking about anyway.

Can anyone actually think of any mainstream games that have sex or rape in them? Leisure Suit Larry was all about sex, but not rape and certainly didn't show anything. GTA had the famous hot coffee scene, but that wasn't actually in game, all you got when you played was a photo of the outside of a house and voice over or a car bouncing when you hired a hooker.
In fact even nudity is rare. I can think of a couple of games with strip club scenes, but not much more than that.

Well, did you know the events of Metal Gear Solid actually happened? Yes, in 1995 the American government actually developed Metal Gear Rex but the base was seized by a renegade special ops group and they were forced to send in a retired government agent to take back the base within twenty four hours but also had to deal with a crazy cyborg ninja when on the base. Oh, and Hideo Kojima was actually Otacon.

Where is my evidence to support this? I don't have time to show it, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

every media has to go through it. books, radio, tv..... all of it was seen as things that could damage our society, but after some time people have embraced them. just ignore this bullsh*t, people will get bored/tired of listening to this every nanosecond of our existence. besides, people who do listen to those ramblings are old. or stupid. world will run out of both after a while.

Christ, I don't even play video games and this makes me really, really angry. I might not play them (mostly because I have about 0 hand-eye coordination) but I do appreciate that they are an art form, I'm fascinated by them and seeing them put down like this makes my blood boil. Just... ugh.
