"DotA" when I tolerated trying to play the damn stolen abomination of a map that literally is just item spam and fest and whoremongering for the idiotic.

In any case, I got banned immediately if I didn't have the map so I'd download it off the internet and of course be let in, but then because I wasn't all that good I'd be kicked.

Same with the RP maps back 8 or 9 years ago when roleplaying pro's existed and they were actually good and then it turned into DO YOU KNOW YOUR CUSTOM CODES?!??! As if custom codes determines whether you become a professional writer in your lifetime or have 10 5,000 page scripts prepared LITERALLY because you LOVE STORY and have been making and editing them for months.

Oh what's that, what's my custom code SPAWN 01 CUSTOM_N008!!!!!!!
Eh hem... the "Unholy Archer".

Of course, I knew all 500 custom codes and they knew 5... and spammed it with infinite bash demon hunters... BAGH.

---

Halo, pretty much was that.

Gears of War, definitely.

Call of Duty for the most part.

Any multiplayer game that's difficult to play in the first place.

Empire at War was that.

I find pretty much every RTS to be like that.

Honestly I don't many games that AREN"T like that, hence why I stick to campaign, and I'm not bad at multiplayer, I just HATE it.

Oh my god, Gears of War 2 multiplayer. I swear it purposely seeks out people that it knows will hate me for various arbitrary reasons.

So I boot it up and go into an online match... cue being joined by some douchenozzle who thinks that my speech impediment is so hilarious he has to mimic it through laughter over the mic for the entire game, then team-kill me right near the end of the game just, and I quote "because you talk like a retard."

Okay, fuck him. I quit out and try another game. In this one, there's some douchebag who stalks me around the entire map, running ahead to pick up everything I was going for, then proceeding to waste it by throwing the grenades randomly about the room or firing his gun in a manner not unlike the Rich Texan from the Simpsons. You know, just blindly firing it into the air. So I get sick of his shit and team kill the ************, at which point he starts slagging me off for "not playing the game properly".

Then we come to the final game I attempted that day and honestly I must have hooked into a server from a church basement in Texas because the endless homophobia just because I happened to let slip that I'm only doing this to kill time until my boyfriend shows up... it was fucking insane.

Basically, Gears of War 2 is either full of cunts, or I'm the most unlucky bastard when it comes to human decency.
I feel for you... even if it was homophobia... it would have been better to just say nothing since no conversion was going to happen while playing a game of Gears of War and there was just harassment and nothing needed... and even if they weren't Christians... Texas is pretty much homophobic (I think).

In any case, being harassed in any degree isn't right.

I had a transexual friend who became a girl with all the parts included and uh... well I never made fun of her just... said I'd pray.

Gears of War is FOR CO OP, that's it.

Having studied the ways of the LoL forums and played the game for a short while, it does, alas, seem that such players are rather common there. My best advice if you do decide to try it again is to just stoically get stuck in and make both of yourselves even moderately useful - it's entirely possible that the other two teammates will have been born with some common sense and place the report correctly on the whining feeder (and he WILL be a feeder, from what I've seen - if my suspicions are correct, he would have typed the insult slightly after getting himself killed).

As for signing up with random partners, if it's a game that is full of people who are really good, more often than not your random partners will be equal to your skill if not better, the reaction of asking the poor girl be banned is so preposterous that it supports this as well, she probably was the worst team-mate these folks ever had.
Put it this way - if he was truly against that particular choice of champion (as might be the case), he had every right to bring this up as champion selection was in progress. Bringing it up 5 minutes or so into the game once nothing can be done about it is just being a tosser. If not, then anyway, Humans vs. AI is the sort of transitional training mode before you get to PvP, so thinking everyone else is going to be an expert on there's really not on - I was advising a beginner earlier today, come to think of it.

I'm sorry but I have zero knowledge of LoL so I was just speaking generally, I have no clue as to how team matchmaking happens and about what you can tell about your teammates prior to actually starting a session. My knowledge of online multiplayer comes from playing final fantasy 11 and a variety of fighting games online, no FPSs or other stuff.

Either way, I think my comment was true on a more general basis, even though in this specific iteration there could be an exception to it.
Oh, no problem, it's quite understandable - in many cases, you might well be right, but I fear the whole DOTA/LoL/HoN business has attracted more than its fair share of players who'll happily blame their teammates, the opponent cheating and the balance of the game to cover their own shortcomings. Even so, the fact that the Report option in League of Legends has the option "Unskilled Player" has been worrying me for some time, though I imagine the result of that would be a stern warning to stop trying to play Ranked games and practise some more against the bots.

Of course, I'm still relatively new and haven't got around to Ranked games myself, so I would ask for someone to please keep an eye on me and hope I never become like this. :p

Black Ops is really bad in that regard. Simply by playing and doing well without saying a word people talk trash. You can't do really good in a match without someone calling you a "******" for whatever strategy you are using. They always have to make some excuse. They can't just say "good game" when they lose. I get accused of camping or glitching all the time even when I spent the whole match basically doing laps around the map killing people.
Yeah, I know what you mean, they will find ANY excuse to complain. Hell, one game a guy on the other team was complaining about me using "cheap and overpowered weapons made specifically for nooblets" when I was using the Spas-12 on Havana. The next match I used nothing but a pistol (the CZ75 with extended mags) and completely cleaned up going about 23-3. The guy then proceeded to call me a cheater and tried to say that I was using a modded controller. I laughed and laughed and laughed especially since he had used an AK74u that game with rapid fire.
I doesn't just stop there, sometimes even your team mates get pissed for stupid reasons that don't make any sense. Key example just happened an hour or so ago.

I was running around Array with an MPL with grip/rapid fire. I was basically destroying people left and right. This whole time a team mate was behind me with an assault rifle and I would always kill the enemy a bit faster. So then I get told that I am stealing kills from him. Totally stupid and illogical. If I used his logic and say he got the kill before I did, I'd be the one getting kills stolen from me.

Oh Jesus, Call of Duty went from "Ah fuck he killed me" "I got the bomb guys!" and "Good game." to the little high pitched squealing kids "Hey fag stop using that fuckin' gun!" "Ah man you suck, WHY'D YOU KILL ME ASSHOLE I DIDN'T KILL YOU!!!" and my personal favorite "Mom why do I have to get off NOW!?!?" Ya CoD's gone down the shitter.
Sorry but it's juvenile and vulgar adults not kids... never encounter them and I know many "young voices" that are 30 years old... stupid voice codecs on Xbox are HORRIBLE for telling what someone really sounds like.

It's just competitive nature really, when your success depends on the other team members pulling their weight and you've put your life's meaning on you succeeding in a game, you tend to be pretty particular about potential noobs messing it up.

That's why not everyone can be a professional athlete, that's why only the best of the best get to do it. It's exactly the same with games, only difference is there's no barrier for entry so the community is extra elitist to make up for the difference and ensure their success.

It's the same practice done when a basketball team won't let you join em, the only difference is that League of Legends or WoW doesn't garner the same recognition as the NBA, so when some fat coach tells you you suck at basketball your reaction is "heh, yeah, I never had a chance joining the Lakers :p" while when a fat nerd tells you "your WoW account needs to be deleted" you're outraged that someone is telling you you're bad at something you like doing.

Neither is "nice" but people's reactions differ TOO MUCH when comparing the NBA example to the WoW one, don't you think?
True, but at the same time, online play =/= competitive play. If I were to say, play a friendly game of basketball with a bunch of strangers, I wouldn't be expecting everyone to be gunning for the win, because what's at stake? I don't know these people. I would be a tad more forgiving if this match was against another human player, but it wasn't, we were up against bots. It really bugs me that people expect you to be absolutely top of your game, like every day is the bloody world championships. when I play a game, it's not to be the best, or to get the high score and if that's what you're going for, why would you sign up for a random game with a bunch of strangers? It doesn't make sense.

I actually think this is a form of digital bullying disguised as elitism, ripping on people makes you feel big, and there's no repercussions because they don't know you and thus can't punish you for your actions.

It could be either, or even sub conscious, it's the kind of thing that makes me agree with blizzard demanding passports and real names for users, the logic behind it makes sense, you can't be an asshole, because people know who you are.

It depends on the game, if it's a fighting game where lag is an issue then yeah, you can't take it that seriously, if it's an mmo or something though, online is all that game has, so it's as serious as anything else.

As for signing up with random partners, if it's a game that is full of people who are really good, more often than not your random partners will be equal to your skill if not better, the reaction of asking the poor girl be banned is so preposterous that it supports this as well, she probably was the worst team-mate these folks ever had.

It is definitely valid to go with the mentality of a quick pickup game into online gaming, but just as you wouldn't do that in a court where every super serious dude of the neighborhood gathers and people are super serial about the game, likewise you shouldn't go in an online game whose players are equally serial about it expecting causal lighthearted fun.

What I'm basically saying is, look before your jump in the hole.

As for the bullying aspect, well, I wouldn't stretch it that far but yeah, people play games to feel good, feeling good has many layers and just as beating a set of 1s and 0s makes you feel good, so does beating a bunch of electrical impulses, flesh and bone, which can actually talk back to you and make you feel even cooler and stronger. From a strictly scientific point of view it makes a lot of sense and is what drives healthy competition.

As long as people don't take a sadistic glee out of being better than others and handle their victories with CLASS I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing but alas in this American culture of in-your-face boasting this hardly seems the case.
Agreed, in this case I should have looked a lot harder than I did. Me and my girlfriend are going to continue playing though, to spite the haters :) I have a few friends who play, so we'll probably team up as 5 and play that way.

True, but at the same time, online play =/= competitive play.
Unfortunately, even games which shouldn't be competitive often become so when played online. For example, damage meters in WoW; they have one positive use (determining if the group is collectively capable and/or performing the needed damage output to beat the clock), but most often they're used to stroke egos. Even if you're doing a non-competitive role (such as tanking), you'll be dealing with people who regard activities which should be cooperative as competitive.

For a non-MMORPG example, there's going for kills in an objective-focused gametypes while playing FPS games such as Halo: Reach. There's no profit in doing this, winning involves completing the objective; nevertheless, going for kills isn't explicitly against the rules either. They do it to exercise their "superiority" by killing players who are trying to play the game as it should be, and may also get some cruel entertainment for ruining another person's fun.

It's one of those unfortunate things which is based in real life culture and human psychology; people need to feel good about themselves to be happy, and one of the best ways to do this is establish yourself as "better" than another person or group of people by any means necessary. The "Keeping-up-with-the-Joneses" mentality is probably tied to this attitude as well, and the whole thing is sad & pathetic in my opinion.

A bit of a harsh viewpoint, but fundamentally true; elitist attitudes are technically bullying, as it involves belittling everyone who doesn't meet some arbitrary standard (as opposed to helping them reach and surpass it). Still, same root problem; boosting one's self-esteem (or ego) by debasing another's.

---

Perhaps it's a bit of a cynical and pessimistic viewpoint to say that this is an (almost) unsolvable due to it being practically culturally indoctrinated by the society. It's all a twisted misunderstanding of reality, the quick & easy solution to boost one's weak self-esteem. Even worse, it's temporary and requires constant reinforcement. Constant boasting. Constant belittling.

Online gaming is probably not so much a contributing factor to these attitudes as they are an outlet. You're always going to run into this sort of problem in online communities, especially when you don't physically know the other players.

Regrettably, there's no solution to this issue which is going to arise any time soon. If you don't want to deal with this sort of behaviour, don't play games online (unless you've played with them offline first, so that you'll know that everyone will get along).

Yep, that's pretty much the best thing you could do, if everyone did that instead of just quitting then the normal people would quickly outnumber them.

Saddest case I have come across is the Spring RTS. It's definately the best RTS I know, AND completely free. However, a bunch of elitists dominate the games to the point that they kick their teammates if they're not good enough for them. And since team balances are defined by in-game hours, they periodically make new accounts to get balanced on the better side. This has gone so far that the ingame ranks are now completely worthless, and the smurffing veterans kick noobs from the noobs only host.

The game still has the average of 300 or so players logged in, but the exessive hostility isn't helping the game spread.

Welcome to Quake Live..

Team mates pushing you off cliffs,racist/nationalist harassment, kicking "noobs" out of servers..
Some people even call you a stealer because you picked up a powerup you found in front of you and didn't let it sitting there.

Competition is the answer to that, be it sports, video games, business, war,...
When true competition comes into play it's every man for himself and getting ahead in any dirty and sneaky way possible, do not expect help from others or any fair play.

Now you decide if you want to play along or find less competitive people, preferably friends who will be held accountable in real life for their dickishness.

League of Legends *LoL in other words* for beginners, you have to learn quick or spite the haters by saying "At least I'm having fun, I could be sitting in the god damn corner doing nothing, right?" usually gets them to shut up.

TF2 from the Free 2 Play audience *if you even THINK of quoting me saying "OH WELL I'M NICE" sit the hell down, theres less of you then there are more of them* mainly because they attracted the MMO FPS crowd. Basically, people who were ALREADY playing broken to hell games, like Combat Arms, to where everything was revolving around glitches. So OBVIOUSLY when they play a game that is GOOD and meant for balance and strategy, their going to complain about how 'NOOB' means good and 'HACKERZ' means VERY good. Those words stopped being insults and just proving how much better you are.

I ye olde days, CS1.6, it was all fun. Complimenting someone on a good/nice kill and such.
reading this made me think twice about multiplayer.
To answer you, LoL stands for League of Legends. A arena based Zelda like game. And I'm with you, back in the *hip cracks* old dayz, we used to say GOOD JOB to GOOD TEAMMATES who actually were NICE back, instead of TROLLING! *back breaks as the old pajamas lays dead, he then jumps back up.*
Well, those were good days.
A good online gaming place is places to where its on a slightly less popular game or a Not Free game, by not popular, I mean not always being voted GAMEZ OFZ THEZ YEARZ!1!one!1! Such as Call of Duty and Halo. *Don't play those games, if you don't want a little bad multiplayer for a majority of time.*
