Hey, I was reading an article at UGO about games that are rip-offs of movies. I thought some of the examples they used were actually pretty shitty. I'm sure there are more out there. Anybody care to share some games they've played that are really blatant rip-offs of popular Hollywood films?

I'm thinking along the lines of Metal Gear Solid being a rip-off of Escape From New York. That sort of thing.

Halo is an obvious rip-off of Starship Troopers (the book more than the movie, but still some of both.)

P.S. Welcome to the Escapist. Stay out of The Basement, and I'd suggest looking up the forum rules so you don't anger the mods.

Hmmmmmm. I'm going to go out on a limb here (as I dont know all that much on this subject) and say that Red Dead Redemption was..... 'inpired' if you will, by alot of western movies.

Every World War 2 game has a few parts that rip off Saving Private Ryan or atleast thats my experience.

EDIT: Oh and lest I forget, Welcome to the Escapist!

Please read the rules, refrain from trolling and flaming, and dont run by the pool. Welcome and enjoy your stay!

EDIT 2:

Yeah I get what you mean about the WWII games being like 'Saving Private Ryan'. Especially those hideous 'Brothers in Arms' titles.

The only way Metal Gear Solid ripped off Escape from New York was the name of the Protagonist. The rest is different. Oh wait, nothing was ripped off because...

FUN TRIVIA: Kojima was inspired by Escape from New York's character only. He even asked the people in charge if he could use the name for Metal Gear, and he has sent a copy of every iteration to John Carpenter, the creator of Snake Pliskin.Source

OT: Spiderman 3 was a rip off of Spiderman 3. Wait a second...

Calumon: I dunno... Maybe you could share that thing you read?

Dead Rising - Dawn of the Dead.

Not that it's a bad thing I thought the game was awesome, but Capcomeven had to put a Disclaimer on the case stating it had nothing to do with George A. Romero or the creators of Dawn of the Dead.

1: Welcome to the Escapist. Love the name, btw.

OT:
- Most WWII games have at least one thing in it that is a blatant rip-off from Saving Private Ryan.
- Wet seemed to be a rip-off of Kill Bill, but I think that was the point...
- Duke Nukem seems like a parody of most action movies.

Welcome to the escapist, read the forum rules and stay out of the basement and you'll be fine!

Also your avatar/name is awesome!

OT:COD 4 had a couple of parts that were very close to Black Hawk Down.

Thanks for welcoming me gang. This place is much livelier than the last place I posted at. All this caution against this mysterious 'basement' is making me want to go there even more.

Also your avatar/name is awesome!
Why thank-you! Yours is boss too. Flying Spaghetti Monster FTW.

I guess the Snake thing sort of works, given that Kojima's work is largely a post-modern commentary on the 'action hero'.

I've been reading that Dead Space is a rip-off of Event Horizon. Any truth to that?

How so? I know little of Halo's lore, but just about all of Starship Troopers.
Well, let's see, gung-ho space marines wearing half a truck's worth of powered armor and carrying enough firepower to level a small city each are dropped from orbit in metal coffins to fight an inscrutable and genocidal race of ugly aliens. Does this scene sound in any way familiar? The only way it could have been more obvious is if Sgt Johnson had used the "you wanna live forever" line.

I'll admit that Halo is not the first or the most obvious thief of the set-pieces of Starship Troopers, and heck, I'll even admit that it works pretty well. But I agree with Movie Bob on this, Halo really does play like a cross between the book and the movie. Not that that's really a bad thing, in fact I think they pull it off really well.

Well, not really, but it does take a lot of its inspiration from it. For instance: here's a side by side of the ship from Event Horizon and Isaac's helmet.

there are probably better comparison pics, but these will work.

And Nathan Drake is basically Lara Croft without the boobs (and way better).

So wait. If Indiana Jones + Boobs = Lara Croft and Lara Croft - Boobs = Nathan Drake, then Indiana Jones = Nathan Drake, right?
