A game will only ever seem Overrated if you believe all the opinions of people on the internet. i never do, which is why i bought Dead Rising 2 and will give it a go shortly.

OT: Fallout 3......most boring "game of the Year according to everyone" i've ever played.

GTA IV it is a great game and accomplishment, but there are so many things that are wrong with it that just drove into me. Read any game review site and they just go right past all the wrongs and write five page reviews about how wonderful the city is and how you can use a cell phone to do everything. Remember overrated does not mean bad.
Hahaha, that summarized pretty much how I felt.

Every time I tried to find a review before my purchase I found:

"The freakin' CITY, man! That freakin' city BREATHES. Just look at those PEOPLE WALKING."

(Going to get a lot of hate for this...Fuck it)

Half Life 2. While it certainly wasn't a bad game at all. I just didn't think it was as great as everyone says it is. Perhaps it was because I was spoiled by Halo or something, maybe it was because I didn't my own PC when it first came out, or maybe it's simply because I bought the PS3 version of The Orange Box, which is how I first played the game. (Off-topic: During the time I owned that game, I really wished Valve would patch ot so I could play TF2 without people taking advantage of the game's glitches.)

I heard the PC version was better, but unfortunately, I doubt my laptop can handle that kind of game without lagging like crazy, so why bother?

Aaand OT: Fallout 3 and Halo Reach. Don't get me wrong, they are OK, but... well... the other ones were better(aka not that boring).

ITT: People who think they are edgy by saying mainstream games
Because obviously all mainstream games are good, therefore everyone who says otherwise must have an ulterior motive, right?
90% of these come from some of the most ridiculous reasons I have ever heard. I should know, most of these people I've seen arguing with people using the most ridiculous ways to justify them being a bad game

Such as hype. Hype does not make a good game better or a bad game worse it's jsut your expectations which is stupid because then you are not reviewing games fairly and your opinion instantly becomes invalid in my books

The new Castlevania, I'm not saying that it got a ton of hype but in my opinion it was just a god awful, rather broken game and every second I was playing it I was thinking "why can't I be in a 2D dungeon instead?", anyway, it's so awful that any review of average is over-hyped in my books.

Hmm, I didn't see yours, anyway, I agree that CoD and Halo are massively overated (especially since Halo kicked off the douchebag gamer) but a load of people are insisting that games like oblivion or final fantasy and..... yeah, your list basically, these games are good, they do deserve their praise, I've played many of them (bioshock and portal to name a couple) years after their release and they're fantastic and original, give credit where credit is due.
Bioshock is kinda a personal thing, look at how many people know of and have played Bioshock, now look at how many people have heard of and played System Shock 2, not very many, and I found System Shock 2 to be better

However Bioshock is still good, but what game are you still playing now is the question?

Same thing for portal, sure everyone finds it great, but becoming a meme kinda kills it, also, it's like a 2 maybe 3 hour game, how many people play it after they beat it?

No one.

The people I know here treat Portal like god (which is over-hyped) and they only played it like 3-5 hours each, while their TF2 records reads 100+ hours.

I'm not saying they're bad, I LOVED Bioshock, I'm just saying their over-rated. (same with FF7, yes it was good but COME ON! WE GET IT, AERIS DIED!, now how many people know that Phantasy Star 2 did the same thing about 10 years before FF7 came out?)
Having never played System Shock 1 or 2 I respect your view of Bioshock but I adore Portal because of it's incredibly original gameplay and complex puzzles, while I adore Final Fantasy VII because of the constantly fresh gameplay, never gets boring, always changing things up, wonderful.

There are games out there that very popular, has a large fanbase, merchadise, etc.
But in your opinion don't deserve that kind of popularity and exposure.
So what are those games?

Mine are Final Fantasy 7 and Call of Duty

Edit: almost forgot Halo
I'm so fed up of people hating Halo, it was released 9 years ago. It rightly got fantastic reviews for being an outstanding game in terms of gameplay, innovation, narrative and immersion. It also had some of the finest LAN and split screen gaming of all time.

It was a good game, in fact, it was a great game, it's one of the best games of all time, get over it.

The original Super Mario Brothers.
You mean the same game that more or less single handedly got the video game industry out of the video game crash out the 80's and is a considerable reason for why the original Nintendo console got off at all?
I KNOW! See. This is why I really don't like it. And I mean, look at the graphics! Then there is the controls? Only two buttons? Half-life/Halo use at least all of the buttons. It is so lame.

Every successful FPS since Goldeneye, with the exception of the Metroid Prime series. Yeah, I went there.

Primary example is IGN's. It's literally seven pages of the city is so alive and beautiful.

Call of Duty. I still like it, but I do get very bored after a while.
Oblivion...maybe it's because I played Fallout 3 before I played Oblivion, but it just didn't seem that great.
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. Good games, sure, but again, they get tedious. Maybe it's because you start off with everything unlocked right from the start?

Most Wii games.
Mario. I am bored of Mario.
And Halo.

Overrated?

Final Fantasy 7: It's certainly good, but it's not the Second Coming of video games. This is one of those that's overrated only because it is so very highly rated.

Tetris: It was at the right place at the right time, but if it had come out today it would've been lost amongst all the other reflex puzzle games. It did very little to advance video gaming even at the time, so it can't stand as a classic great.

Minecraft: This is a cool game and I like it a lot, but there's really not much to it. It really says something about the industry as a whole that this simply-made game is leaving the supposed triple-A titles in the dust. Again, overrated solely due to extremely high ratings because it fills a niche that the industry has failed to address.

I foresee this thread going in a very bad direction....

I just feel it in my gut.

Anyway, to contribute to the topic at hand, I consider most games that are made simply as money-grabbing ventures (i.e. COD:MW2) that are also touted as "perfect" or "master pieces" to be overrated. They're essentially more of the same, with minor tweaks, and a forced narrative. Certainly nothing worthy of "best EVAR!" praise. Especially since many of those that claim "best EVAR" change their minds a month later when something new releases.

Essentially, 'flavor of the month' games are always overrated in my eyes.

I usually like these sort of games.
I agree with DA and MW2, but everyone thought Invisible War was crap.

Bejeweled turned out surprisingly interesting so I'll say... Okay, I can't come up with anything original. CoD and DAO. Oh and Halo.

$5 says most replies will be from CoD and Halo.

Mass Effect, Dragon Age, anything by Bioware pretty much is overrated.
