What are some games, that you feel are to hard for there own good, this can either ruin the experience, or make it that much more of an accomplishment when you do beat it. List the game, and what about it made it hard.

Nier: This was a really good game, I am surprised it is getting the ratings it is, If you ask me this is a VERY under-rated title (if you want an underdog to root for pick up this game) There's just one problem... It's Really REALLY REEEEEEEEEHEHEHEEEAAAAALLY (to quote Jim Carry) Hard. I was also playing it on Hard mode as well. Lets put it this way, Most boss battles go like this. Is my life full? OK cool I can get hit once. Ok Is my life not full? Ok I am going to dodge this entire fight, and memorize fight patterns. IMO this makes the game better because when you finally do kill the boss, and see the MEGA bad ass death animations, you feel like it was worth it just to see this huge monster get the SHIT Beat out of it.

System Shock 2: Not only is this game scary as hell, but it's also HARD as balls. Now, I know this is blasphemy because this game is counted as, and IS STILL one of the best games ever... But seriously... This game... HARD AS BALLS!I Tried to play on Impossible, and ended up just wanting to slit my throat right then and there. 1 hit kills, 2 hit kills from turrets (and turrets fire automatic)The whole thing is built up to make your life hell, and if it's not hard enough, the game is so scary your paying more attention to your own heart rate then to the fact that your getting hit. this just... it ruined it for me, making it unplayable because not only was it balls to the wall scary, I just couldn't get anywhere with out hating life.

Golden Eye: yeah, this is that game we all played as kids and loved it... but have you ever sat down, and tried to unlock EACH and every map possible? seriously... That shit is SO hard.

Nier? Hard? What?

I never had any trouble with the game, personally.

I died a few times but only because I was severely underleveled.

I covered all of this in my review....*cough*shamelessplug [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.203204-JK-Reviews-NIER]*cough*

Though, to be OT, fucking Ninja Gaiden. I couldn't even get pass the first level!

I don't think there is such a thing as a game that is too hard. But the hardest games that I've played are Demon's Souls (also really fun because of the challenge) and Castlevania LoS on Paladin difficulty. There are plenty of games a lot harder than these, but those are for masochists, so I try to avoid them.

Yeah Ninja Gaiden. I tried it on the hardest level first thinking I could pass it...didn't get past the second boss fight.

Then I tried it on regular still couldn't get passed the second boss. I would have been real fun too, if I could just pass it.

That would be your problem there. It's called impossible for a reason.

OT: I can't really think of any myself...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow Of Chernobyl... it went for a hyper realistic approach to gameplay, which means bleeding, hunger, health, radiation, gun quality, weather, and so many more things came into play during combat... however everything it does that makes the game hard also makes it a very compelling experience, that invokes many different emotions during your journey through the zone...

As a kid I always found Secret of Mana sorta hard on the Snes. It's shit easy on an emulator though. I actually finished but they don't make RPGs like that anymore.

I know I literally beat the main story, not including Kaine's little side thing, in one sitting. It was sort of average as far as difficulty until you get the spears and than all you have to do is mash the Y button and everything dies in front of you... It's a dodge and powerful attack all in one button command... the only time I remember dieing was in one of the text adventure parts because I got turned around when I had to choose which direction to take... I ended up going North 3 times before dieing...

A lot of Hell Shooters tend to suffer from this.
Bangi Oh!:Spirits was REALLY hard, to the point of pure desire to hunt down the developers of the game.

Heh. I actually never died in the text adventure part. I thought that was the easiest.

I only died during the
boss that invades the home village

That guy was a fucking *****.

You know i cant really recall such a game. Not that im that good, but its more to the effect that if a game is bad for whatever reason its one that is readily forgotten. I would think that difficulty more often than not makes for a better game.

Only ones I look at with heavy difficulty would be battletoads and bayou billy, both of which ended up being better for the exp if nothing else but for the badge of honor and sense of pride at putting down difficulty beasts.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. Then again that was years ago so maybe if I tried nowadays it would be easier. Screw it, they were/are still hard.

First mistake: trying it on the hardest difficulty.

Second mistake: giving up.

Then again, I was REALLY frustrated by the second boss. Him and Murai (first boss) are absolute dicks. I strived though, and it's an amazing game.

OT: Ninja Gaiden...2. I can only play through on the easiest difficulty. I suck.
Haha I meant Ninja Gaiden two. I tried it on that hardest difficulty because everyone told me it was hard. So if I could play it somewhat on hard but couldn't pass it I thought I'd be able to pass it...it ended up being the same thing haha. My logic doesn't work. I spent a good two weeks on the damn underground boss so I got pissed off and started to play something else. I haven't picked it up again. Maybe I'll try it again...

I don't know if any game gets too hard that it takes away from their enjoyability. I mean, if it's like that, it's there to challenge you, and set up an atmosphere, and, besides, there's always a way around it.

I think fake difficulty or poor technical design are what kill enjoyment of a game. Or, sometimes, where they suddenly shove you into a section where there's almost no way to get through without dying over and over again and force you to repeat it endlessly. I hate it in games where you wind up dying or surviving more based on luck than by skill. That's just annoying.
