Breakdown for the Xbox got insane. Make it through the boss level? That?s good. Now beat everything you ever fought ever, again.

I don't need to say why Demon's Souls is hard, however the first arch demon I beat got my heart racing more then most games have at the final boss.

Well, everyone is saying Ninja Gaiden. There goes my first answer. I can proudly say that I beat NG Black on Master Ninja, even though it took the most amazing amount of deaths and continues, especially against Alma (dear god, Alma). Still doing normal/hard mode weapon runs on NG2.

Second would be Devil May Cry 3. It took a while for me to actually get a hang of it, but it wasn't that bad afterwards. At least until I picked up the difficulty. I did eventually beat it on DMD mode. Devil May Cry 4 doesn't count. It's too easy.

A couple people say bullet hell shooters. Touhou here. I probably could beat Normal on a couple of them now, but I don't play enough anymore so I keep making dumb mistakes that screw me over when the final boss shows up.

By the way I beat master ninja mode on ninja gaiden *runs*
High five!

Halo reach on Legendary Single player.
I was close to punching my xbox on one mission, i mean i'm supposed to be a super soldier but i get killed if i try and attack any group larger than four enemies plus grenades become useless against Elites.
On one mission i was near the end and i got a checkpoint only to be instant killed by the combined wrath of a lazer gun and an alien grenade launcher a moment later. It then loaded back to that checkpoint just for me to be instant killed again and again and again until i gave up and had to restart the mission

Devil May Cry 3. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game. It's just that to this day, if I so much as say its name I get carpal tunnel. Don't even get me started on the Heaven or Hell mode! (Everything dies in one hit...even you! Which makes the puddles of acid inside the Leviathan a pain in the ass!)

God of War 3 on Chaos mode. Your main enemy here isn't in-game, it's your patience level.

(Do demos count?) Ninja Gaiden. The normal enemies I can deal with, but the boss had me at a loss (pardon the rhyme).

OP: To continue the ninja theme, Nightshade...
Are you serious? The whole point of Nightshade was to make an easier version of Shinobi. I loved Shinobi and beat it on hard, so I thought Nightshade might be fun. Was bored to tears due to the lack of a challenge. I can't imagine that being difficult unless you're blind-folded and missing both thumbs.

As for the Nier discussion OP started, the game really is quite easy and I found the bosses to have easily dodgeable/blockable attacks. Especially the multiple playthroughs for the other parts of the story are ridiculously easy since you keep your levels. Third playthrough took about an hour. Still an awesome game, though.

I laughed when people said Demon's Souls.
Its hard for the first stage.
If you played past that, you would know that.

The old megaman games and the later megaman x games; yes, I get that the core audience had played those for year and years getting better at them, but that doesn't mean you have to make them so damn hard to compensate for it and alienate all of us folks that play games for fun.

I usually chalk it up to me sucking if I find something incredibly hard, so nothing really comes to mind.

Demon's Souls is just stupid. It's cheap, DIAS (Do It Again Stupid -- thanks, Shamus). There have been other games that were too difficult or too picky/broken that I just quit playing, but Demon's Souls was designed to be that way. I can't think of any others off the top of my head, because I tend not to remember them.

OP: If you complain about the game being too difficult on its most difficult setting, that's not really legitimate unless the second most difficult setting is a cakewalk.

I dunno, boyos. I played Megaman X games legitimately and they're not too bad. Same with Earthworm Jim. (Then, I got really good at it and kept beating it.)

A game's higher difficulty levels put there to challenge you seem like you were fairly warned too. Do they count? Dunno.

If I had to pick a game, I'd go for Zanac for NES. I cheated, but in the course of the game, I must've died - you continue instantly in the game - a billion times.

Prinny: Can I really be the Hero? It was I wanna be the guy, but with exploding penguins. Seriously that game would constantly kick you in the balls and laugh about it as you slowly waste away your 1000 lives. I'm still trying to beat the extra DLC level "Asagi comes home", that entire level is one giant dick move and leap of faith it's insane.....and long. Still gotta do Asagi's story too before Prinny 2 comes out.

Seriously, Asagis level alone summarizes the game

Anyone who's played this game knows the kind of hell it can be.

Ending Boss-A-Thon in Viewtiful Joe. I can't get past the shark...as I've said so many times on this website.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is awesome because the more you play it, you and your hands honestly get SKILLZ. Seriously. The fact that it's way hard makes you work at it.

Chaos in Inward Chaos in Dissidia: Final Fantasy. <-- Fucker took three days straight worth of retries, calculating, and root beer to beat.

I never did play Shinobi.
Nightshade was hard, since I didn't have a whole game's worth of previous training. Nightshade is well known for its punishing difficulty.
Sorry if my previous post came across as aggressive. It was meant in a genuinely dumbfounded tone caused by completely different views and perceptions of difficulty. I didn't mean any offense and will concede the point that my Shinobi play meant Nightshade was familiar territory to me, which I hadn't really considered.

If you enjoyed Nightshade, I strongly suggest looking to get an old copy of Shinobi. You can always turn down the difficulty if necessary, but it was an all around better game, in my opinion.

Regular quest is very hard, but doable on normal. If you're really good, hard and Master Ninja are possible too (although you'll die A LOT). However, if you actually beat all the Missions, you must be either unemployed with no life or hacking. They are so damn hard.

Golden Eye: yeah, this is that game we all played as kids and loved it... but have you ever sat down, and tried to unlock EACH and every map possible? seriously... That shit is SO hard.
I did easily so ya I did. Then I played for 16 hours and then I turned 10 and upgraded to a xbox. The timeline might not be right but eh.

...Well Radioactive Lemur I have no life or a job (not my fault no one wants to hire me!) I still have yet to beat the second boss...on normal...

Dwarf fortress, the countless times i've had people just look at the graphics and go "thats stupid" is frustrating because I know the depth and innumerable possibilities within the game would have them playing it. Plus out of the few people that have actually tried only one actually got good at it and they love it. Its also the only game where on the forums where i've seen people asking if doors stop zombie whales cause a few beached themselves and are en route to their castle entrance. Or that a booze shortage can be more dangerous then a dragon.. Random stuff like that is what puts this game in a special place for me.
NOW GO DOWNLOAD IT http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
I'd recommend a tileset so you can understand whats what early on...
This is what I use, its a complete package so you don't need to download what I linked above.. http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2511
