Remember the first Ninja Turtles game on the NES? That game was only for people who hated themselves and needed to be punished. Every cheap trick you can put into a platformer, and then some. And dont even get me started on the Dam level.. Also Star Voyager for the same system, balls that was hard. No tutorial, no description of gameplay in the manual, just this is your ship...get to it. There were so many ways to die without even SEEING an enemy ship, and if you DID get to them, good luck finding the mothership in that spinning morass.

No More Heroes (to an extent) and the JDMC titles as a whole both fall neatly into that particular trap.

Ninja Gaiden 2. It's not even the combat that's hard, the platforming just gives me the shits sometimes.

Any game that I can't beat.

Devil May Cry 3. Though that's slightly due to the bad port for the computer...

Yeah Ninja Gaiden. I tried it on the hardest level first thinking I could pass it...didn't get past the second boss fight.

Then I tried it on regular still couldn't get passed the second boss. I would have been real fun too, if I could just pass it.
Ok I was going to say Ninja Gaiden probably lost a lot of people due to difficulty but you are a ninja. I thought the two hardest levels were the first two boss fights.

By the way I beat master ninja mode on ninja gaiden *runs*

I thought ninja gaiden 2 wasn't hard as much as the camera seemed to be on more drugs and the game kinda bored me. I have yet to finish it, I went back to Ninja gaiden black.

No other games can compare to the pain Ninja gaiden gave me. I still have combos drilled into my brain: X,Y,XXX,Y

I remember the Mega Man X games being really, really difficult. The first game in particular sticks out in my mind because I tried to beat it so many times. I could beat all the Mavericks with ease, I knew where the armor upgrade capsules were, I had all the E-Tanks and a maxed-out energy meter, I even knew how to get the super-secret Hadouken capsule in Armor Armadillo's stage.

For whatever reason, though, I could never beat Sigma's final form. I would go to the final Sigma stage with four completely filled E-Tanks and use the Hadouken to kill the dog boss and Sigma's first form without taking any damage. Essentially, I'd be entering that last battle with four full meters' worth of energy. It should have been more than enough, but I never could do it. Still haven't, to this day.

I second Mega Man X. Though I must have been a child savant back when I played it on the console because I suck shit at it on an emulator.
Also Earthworm Jim.

For PC there are the Ultima games.

Yes I am a ninja *proud pose*

Holy Moly if Ninja Gaiden is harder than two then I don't want to play it. I was thinking of getting it now that I was going to replay two but never mind. Haha nevermind I don't want to have combos drilled into my head, I have enough on my plate already with physics and chemitry

I think most Shoot-em-ups/Beat-em-ups fit that whole 'hard for their own good'.

An easy shoot-em-up isn't normally worth playing *cough* all your bases belong to us *cough*.

If you get Ninja gaiden black there is an easy mode, you just have to unlock it. Most people should be able to beat it on easy erm ninja dog mode.

It's probably because I'm not playing it correctly (or smart) because I seem to read more posts than not saying people cruised through on the toughest difficulty, but Dragon Age: Origins is currently beating me senseless and has lead to much cursing and mouse tossing. I'm really only still in it now to see what happens next in the story. (Damn, Bioware know how to spin a yarn.)

Hard games are great, it's the ones that are cheap that I hate.

Example:

Walking down a hallway and randomly a bomb goes off, insta-kills me. No visual or auditory warnings just one second 'Tra-lala-lala off down a hallway I go' next second 'Oh my god why is my arm over there and legs stuck in the ceiling!?'

The only way to avoid said bomb is to know it's coming and stand back a bit to wait for it to go off before moving on.
