You are missing everything I'm saying.

I'm not being critical of something I don't understand.

I'm asking for someone to explain the things I don't understand.

Read my post again. "I asked for someone to explain to me exactly how it changed the genre."
Ok, so when you ask to explain it, and I say, "features a, b, c were originated in Halo and are copied in other games now", and you say, "Well, I've seen that feature and that feature before", without backing it up, leads me to think you just try to tear down Halo's accomplishments so you can feel better about yourself for hating it.

Provide some evidence that Halo did not heavily influence the console FPS genre and maybe I'll believe you.
*facepalm*

All you did was say "multiplayer, regenerating health, vehicles" and that the "control system for consoles has been copied ad nauseum for years now". Simply listing things like that is not enough to help me understand. Please explain how those things were revolutionary. I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm trying to get some basic information out of you.

I wasn't tearing things down without backing them up; in fact, I was trying to make it clear that I did not understand so that you could enlighten me.

Well if you're going to nitpick on terminology I'm not so sure it's worth arguing the point. Halo was one of the first Console FPS's to incorporate the 'overshield' and vehicles into it's single and multiplayer gameplay. A lot of things that were done in Halo have been copied in many other popular FPS's since, like picking up enemy weapons, regenerating health and vehicle sections.

I'm not sure what you want in something that 'revolutionized' the genre, but for a game to introduce an idea to FPS games and to have many other FPS games copy those ideas sounds like revolutionizing to me.

Man, count another vote for "The Sims" series...I just don't get how anyone could find that more then a 15 minute novelty.

The only other game that came close was "Nintendogs".. That was the game that convinced me that some review sites get paid off.

I would have voted for Fallout 3, mostly on account of my high regard for the original titles and my feeling on playing the third game that Bethesda really missed the mark. And while I still feel it's not as good as the first two games, it's also not horrendous. The dialogue is clunky, but I'm starting to find a grudging respect for it as long as I think of it as its own game and not another Fallout game. But perhaps that's just because the games I've been playing lately have not been that great.

GTA IV is another big disappointment. Like many people, I think San Andreas was the series' peak. IV was just...lacking. I don't know. Some of the dark whimsy was just missing from the game, and I can't be the only one who would try to explore the city, only to be constantly interrupted by my cousin. Annoying. Open world games should encourage exploration, not stick a leash on you.

EDIT: I called Bethesda Obsidian because it's super early in the morning here and my head wasn't on straight. Fixed.

Alone In The Dark. Awful game aswell as Driver 3. The driving in that was very badly designed.

I think what he is trying to say is that Halo was the first Modern FPS to include all of these things into one game. The combination of those elements made a formula that other companies looked at and said "This works really well, we should do it!"

Halo didn't invent Regenrating Health. Halo introduced the concept to the FPS. Before that developers would just litter the landscape with healthpacks.

Halo didn't invent the concept of multiplayer vehicle fighting, that would probably go to Mechwarrior I think, they were the first to do it in an FPS.

Halo didn't invent picking up ememy weapons in the FPS. I think that credit goes to Half-Life, if not then maybe the Doom/Quake Series.

Halo took a lot of good ideas from other games and sometimes other genres and combined them.

Thank you for helping to clear some of that up. While it may not have been the first to allow you to pick up enemy weapons / ammo, and I'm not sure about Half-Life, but I think why I noted that about Halo was that the enemy weapons were vastly different from what you got as a human. That to me was an innovative feature. If it was done before in Half-Life ok, as Half-Life is another one that is credited with shaping the genre.

I'm sorry, but wasn't the ability to pick up enemy weapons in Wolfenstein 3D, (a game released in 1992) or has my memory gone crazy?

Also, I think the first hint of good FPS controls on console was Goldeneye. But maybe I'm splitting hairs.

I have to agree with you on Bioshock. It was a good game, but not the amazing title people made it out to be.
I disagree, it was the first game that had me deeply involved in its storyline and the world of Rapture was so beautifully constructed.

Some of the shooting elements, awful last-gen character models and repetition were negatives for me but all in all I found it to be a wonderful, immersive experience.

It was also the first game that asked you to question your motives and actions as a gamer.

Back on topic: there are so many but I'm gonna go with Psychonauts, which for some reason I just cannot get into, it bores me to tears.
Trust me, I loved the storyline in Bioshock, it was very creative and original. But the gameplay to me was just the same as every other shooter and at that point I was rather sick of playing shooters.

I agree with you. Bioshock was short. But yet it had its charms wich i guess was the point of the "Game of the Year" title.
