I bought Battlefield: Bad Company used for about $10, because I didn't expect it to be particularly good. But now it's my favourite human vs. human FPS on the Xbox 360.

I try not to let my expectations run too rampant in the first place, so most of my expectations come when sequels or games made by the same company are involved.

My list:
Final Fantasy 4, 6 and 8 - After loving FF1 and following the series closely
Secret Of Mana - After loving other Square games
Chrono Trigger - After loving other Square games
(Super) Castlevania 4 - After loving the NES games and just receiving my SNES
Halo 3 - Loved Halo 1, liked Halo 2.. great story continuation, great ending and great multiplayer
Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) - A resurrection of a classic series I loved, and made by a dev team I love the work of
Mass Effect - Loved Dragon Age but hadn't played any other Bioware games, so was unsure if I'd like it but gave it a shot because everyone seemed to love it

CoD4: Modern Warfare.

I had heard good things about it, but I was a little cautious given that I hated war shooters that revolved around America saving the day AGAIN.

And then came the first mission where you barely manage to jump onto a helicopter off a sinking ship.

My jaw literally dropped.

DA:O, didn't really look to much into it before it came out(I hate getting all hyped up about something then having to wait for it) so when I got it I was overwhelmed with just how damn big it was, hell Im still playing the damn thing

Paper Mario 2, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Dark Alliance 2, Fallout 3, Guitar Hero 2, Stella Deus (and I can't even find it for sale these days), and Zendikar/Worldwake if we're talking about any games.

Lots of people thought Metroid Prime was going to be terrible when it was first announced, and that game was absolutely incredible.

World of Warcraft... Still playing it four years later...

My first Zelda game, The Wind Waker, absolutely blew me away.

More recently, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Well, always thought that LittleBigPlanet would be a cutsie piece of crap, but it turned out to be an even bigger piece of cutsie crap than I thought.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Ocarina of Time, and Silent Hill 2.

All of which are currently in the top 3 spaces of my "favorite games ever" list.

Mass Effect 2. I pretty much expected a complete revolution in terms of how games tell stories, and I got it and then some. Amazing game.

Prototype was a game I had low expectations going into because it looked like it took a lot of good ideas from other games and mixed into a blender to see if they were good in one product. As it turns out, Prototype was one of the most fun PC games I got in 2009.

Another would be Twilight Princess (Zelda). I hate most Zelda games because I get bored of them so quickly. Twilight was no exception to this, but for the majority of the early part of the game, I enjoyed it a bazillion times more than either Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask.

Assassin's Creed II - loved number one, two improved it and streamlined it
Mass Effect 2 - pretty much the same argument as for ACII
Shadow of the Colossus - went in expecting nothing but a bunch of epic boss fights, got so much more
Bioshock - expected a game that could possibly rival HL2 for my favorite FPS, didn't beat it, but definately tied.
GTA IV - best GTA game according to me. Everything came together in a package that really worked for me (I know a lot of people don't think so)
Halo 3 ODST - expected more of the same, but ODST nailed something that the other halo-games didn't have, at least for me
Mercenaries 2 - basically Playground of Destruction with beefed up graphics. Only downside was no World in Flames-mode
Kingdom Hearts - sleeper hit. Really thought it was going to be ridculous, Disney mixed up with final fantasy... Really surprised me, now one of my favorite PS2-series
Kingdom Hearts II - Better combat, easier narrative to follow, and a difficulty that was more suitable for me (I got baldy pwned in the first game)
