I would say Silent Hill 2. After going through so much shit and surviving for so long with James, the twist just hits you like a kick to the nuts. It makes the whole journey so pointless.

Katamari Damancy. It seems like no matter how good you do, that freaking king bitches at you to do better because it's not big enough or your not fast enough or some crap... It's frustrating. When I do bad and a game complains, that's fine. But when I do great then it's totally uncalled for.

Well, yeah... If you stop playing right there. The fact that he overcomes in the end is pretty much the whole point, in spite and largely because of the twist...

plus if you get the 'Rebirth' ending he brings his wife back to life... now there's a resolution for ya.

But yeah, when I beat it for the 'In Water' ending, that was pretty depressing. I'd agree with that one being pointless, even though it was appropriate.

What exactly does he overcome? A demon that personifies his own guilt? That doesn't change the fact that for the past 15 hours or so you were controlling a murdering, selfish, self-deceiving absolute trash of a man. I really felt dirty after finding out what he did.

Phantasy Star Online, partially because of the atmosphere, and partially because I hate the game. The music is very slow and depressing, especially in the mines. The combat system is equally slow and depressing. You can't even switch targets in the middle of a combo, every combo uses the same attacks (some attacks just have a short delay and deal more damage), and the enemies are dumber (and in most cases, slower) than zombies.
The story goes like this: You're sent down to some planet to rescue some dude's daughter. It turns out that the person you're supposed to rescue is being used as a host for some unimpressive-looking god of destruction. Possibly because your character runs jogs and fights way too damn slowly to be able to get to her in time. Once you killed said god, the girl's soul flies out and off the screen. The End.
EDIT: 666th post about Phantasy Star Online? Well, I guess that's somewhat fitting.
ergh this game amazed me at first and after around 1 hour in it became so repetitive extra mode just sucked monkey the only real think i liked about it was the openings and closings like an anime series very creative but not worth an award.

I will agree with everyone who has stated that beating a game is depressing. When all is said and done, the times are gone, never to be returned. You're left feeling empty. All of a sudden you wish you there was more game.

Bioshock is actually very depressing. The atmosphere is really claustrophobic, and I can't play for more than an hour or two. It's very good, but I just can't play for that long.

But that's just it, he doesn't just overcome the demon, he overcomes his guilt. He gets the forgiveness of his dead wife
and he takes the little girl from the town and adopts her like his wife wanted.
Even after what he did, I think he deserved his forgiveness, due to all of the stuff he went through in Silent Hill just to get it. It just seemed like he was a good guy, even still, seeing as to how freely and completely he was resolved to his pennance and the search for his wife in the evil little town.

I don't care, I'm still not forgiving him. He deserves to get tortured by Red Pyramid for all eternity.

Sterile landscapes/areas in games depress me. Doors that open into empty, useless rooms. Pubs with dartboards and pool tables that cant be used REALLY depress me.

Coming up to the end of any of the Tales games depresses me, 'cause I end up with a constant sense of "nooo don't end now" at the back of my mind.

How did you make Roman die? That didn't happen for me... Or was it in-game?

I get depressed whenever I fail to do something in a game. The last time I really felt depressed was when me and my brother couldn't beat Sonic 2, we had been trying for ages on co-op... Damn the Mega Drive for not being able to save... We were depressed for a long time after that...
When I nearly completed Pokemon Emerald and the game cart was faulty, so whenever I completed it it told me the save file was corrupt. I was so damn tenacious - or stupid - I did that three times before I destroyed the game cart...
Well what happens is...

one ending kate dies and another ending roman dies and of course you must have picked the ending where kate dies, no? And i had picked the ending where roman dies

Also more recently CoD:WaW has depressed me by showing how gritty war is by having dudes limbs flying about and bits of bodies getting blown off, all the while your squad mates are screaming, it's quite frightening.

Far Cry 2
When you finish the first act and go back to the bar to fight with your friends. I come in to see my two best buddies (Josip and Marty) standing there, Josip pushed the fridge against the door and I looked around the room to see everyone. There was a moment of peace as I looked around, pulling my assault rifle out and thinking "We can take them". Within a second though bullets fly through a window and killed Paul. I immidiatly ran up to him and tried to heal him only to find him dead. I turned around looking at Marty give me one final glance before a bullet hit him to. At that point I literally screamed out and yelled for him to get back up. I really was attached to him mainly because whenever I went down in a fight he would always appear, pull me out, hand me a gun, and say "Let's fuck them up...". The fighting continued as one by one everyone was gunned down. Josip was the last to fall beside me after about a minute of fighting. At that point I stood in the corner, pulled out an MG, and threw every grenade and molotov out every window and sprayed the open ones with bullets. When I later awoke in the back of a truck in the middle of the desert I felt truely lost. Without Josip's guidance and Marty's bravery, I felt like there was no hope left for me in the game. When I later met up with the new buddies I hated them with a passion, they came no where near the same level as Josip and Marty. I don't know why but this game truely draws me in whenever I play it. Am I the only one who had any experiences like this in the game?

...

And Final Fantasy X

Bioshock depresses me now because a) I played it on my roommate's much-fancier-than-mine computer and won't be able to play it again, and b) watching YouTube clips of the game's scarier moments, for some reason, freaks me out too much to want to play it again in spite of how awesome it was.

GTA IV was something of a bummer at the ending because of what happens to one character or another, but it's not interesting for a game to never immerse you emotionally, and I always find that teaching Niko Bellic how to fly - using a motorcycle - always cheers me up again. That, or sends me into fetal fits of giddy laughter for about half an hour, which is also good.

I don't know if I've ever been genuinely depressed by a game for any reason other than the game being uninteresting, but I'm not sure if that says more about my emotional range or my taste in games.

KOTOR. I was playing an evil character and enslaved the wookies, they were making these sadish... yowls, which reminded me of how sad my dog is when I leave her in the kennel when I go to school.

The only game that depressed me was Legend Of Dragoon for the PS1. You get attached to characters in an RPG, so when Lavitz (or Ravitz for the J-RPG fanatics) died, it was like getting kicked in the gut. Sure, you got a replacement, but he wasn't Lavitz. That and the ending, where Dart puts the glass of whiskey and ice on Lavitz's window sill. I've never been that attached to a game before or since.

Starsiege.

The Cybrid ending. I'd played through the human campaign first and I developed a real liking for the character of Harabec. Then I played through the Cybrid campaign and as I did with the human one, I read through the encyclopaedia and news entries the devs included for each campaign. There was something gut churning-ly depressing and sickening about how the Cybrids were wiping out the humans. And then, at the very end, a mission or three after killing his brother Caanon, you kill Harabec. I was almost sick. He was one of the coolest characters in a game I've ever played.
