I have always felt a bizarre closeness to my soldiers. I'm talking about RTS's of course, I employ turtle tactics in nearly every match in almost any game, opting to build defense and use my troops in ambush and guerilla attacks.
I cannot bear to watch my men die, for some reason or another. In most FPS and RPG games i'm fine with it, I even kill them sometimes for getting in my way.
Not so in Company of Heroes, not so in Command & Conquer, [i\]not so[/i] in Dawn of War and Battlefield 40k and EndWar. Especially in Company of Heroes, the panicked shouts of "We're pinned down!" sometimes scare me. I do everything in my power to save them... but sometimes... they just die. Even it's a nebelwerfer barrage from nowhere, even it's a fully loaded halftrack busting through a wall: I always think [i\]"I COULD'VE STOPPED THEM FROM DIEING!"[/i] My depression then fuels my rage and I end up tank busting the enemy back to Hell for eliminating my scout squad.
[i\]"They were brave men, died in enemy territory so that they might reinforce a high fuel point, died so that this battle might be won. It is unfortunate that a certain HALF-TRACK wasn't FAST ENOUGH."[/i]
