Definitely Resi 5. Also, i was very disappointed with Red Steel and the Wii in general, but that's been said too many times already.

Mass Effect. I know lots and lots of people like that game. I just don't like it that much. There's like 30 minutes of action for every hour of walking around talking to people, and some parts are so ridiculously hard (even on normal) that you have to practice it over and over to get it right (points finger at the one plant boss fight with the zombies). Did i mention my disappointment with Final Fantasy 12 yet? No? Ok, time to rant more!

In FFXII, there was an option you could activate where you just sat around and watched the action go on. WHAT MADE SQUARE ENIX THINK THAT THAT WOULD BE FUN? The Active-time battle system was overdone, but at least they made that work. In FFXII they essentially beat it over the head with a stick then chucked the retarded remains at gamers. Even if you turned the stupid gambit system off and took control of the main character the battle system it used took most of the fun out of it.

Sorry for the "wall o' text," but those things bugged me ><

I'm gonna get a kicking for this but Halo 3. HEAR ME OUT!!! I believe it was overhyped by the gaming media and therefore my expectations were raised by this and when I got it I was slightly disappointed by the story and the fact the equipment was hyped as a game changing mechanic. I barely use it. Online is good fun though.

Dude it's okay, I'm a fan of Halo and I respect your opinion. Quite a few people on the Escapist share the same viewpoint as you, don't worry. I think we just have a nice balance between fans and non fans.

For my choice it has to go to Fable 2, I expected so much from it whether it was promised or not and given that I adored the original Fable I expected something great, varied and deep. For some reason though, it lacked some of the original charm of the first and it was a lot shorter and less deep to. Like they put in some new features and then threw away half the old stuff.

Cheers. It just that Halo is generally looked upon as a no-no here. Also agree with you on the Fable 2.

Just off the top of my head...

InFamous - Played it for a day before trading it back in. There were some game mechanics that I really don't like in other games that found their way in Sucker Punch's game (overwhelming enemies, cheap hits/kills).

Fable II - I mostly got this game because a friend of mine adores the series, but we both agree that the second game wasn't very good. Bless Molyneux's heart, but there's a point in the game where it just gets dull. The wonky multiplayer didn't help things.

Mass Effect - I remember liking it the first play through, but going through it a second time, I'm surprised how frustrated I am with the combat - especially when the game has moved me in the opposite direction of a group of enemies after the conclusion of a cutscene.

Mark of Kri - I absolutely adored this game. My problem with it is while it starts out as an action oriented adventure, by the end of the game it turned into a stealth-oriented game.

Valentine82, I'd like to know your thoughts on GTA4. I've been replaying it lately to fill the time and really enjoy it. :)

Take your pick of any valve game. Their games are by no means bad but the way people go on about them leaves many people disappointed.

I don't pay attention to hype, but when I do I tend to get swept up in it. With that being said I didn't think that SSBB lived up to it's extremely high expectations (and this coming from someone who *loved* the original two).

Final Fantasy 10-2 got hyped up so badly, it tricked everyone into thinking it would be a good game in the end.

Final Fantasy XII. It looked great in the previews. The game itself was another story, though; it was one of the few games that I didn't bother finishing. And I hate it when games have really crappy protagonists. Did anybody actually like Vaan?

The new Prince of Persia was a major disappoint for me as well, but that's probably because the Sands of Time trilogy had me going in with higher expectations.

Spore...

I would like to compile a list of games that, quite frankly, didn't live up to their hype.

Starting off the list

Spore :)
Oh, the very first post beat me to it.

Yeah, no game will ever be as disappointing to me as Spore.
Yea, have you seen some of the interview videos from when it was still a couple of years from being completed, it looked more awsome than it turned out to be. You had things like an underwater stage and your buildings apperences reflected the kind of path your creature took. Basically, this game looked a lot more like the evolutionary life simulator we were promised.

Don't belive me than pull out some popcorn and see this thirty minute video of what Spore looked like three years ago.

Wow..... Gameplay wise that looks mostly superior to the spore we have today.... truly a shame.

I don't think a game has disappointed me more than spore actually... All that potential... oh well.

Only poorly thought out threads about it.

OT: Kind of Red Faction. It was exactly what I expected, but it just seemed hollow for some reason.

And that my friend is why I am firm in my belief that I should only play a game after seeing the finished copy at a friends house or play the demo, the command and conquer franchise has been my only mistake with that since before hand they had ALL been great games.
