Games that died with their successors...

These games could be classics, new or not even heard of that died when their successors were released. This could be due to the company being bought out, no money, change in management or anything that completely screwed up the series.

I have two:
Machines, by Acclaim Entertainment - My very first I ever had, supposed to have released a sequel but company got bankrupt and bought out by another company.
Red Alert 3: Oh my god...the series pretty much nuked itself when it released this, the RE2 graphics in my opinion were better then the cartoony feel of the new one. Actors werent even great actors...majority of the female cast looked like bloody pornstars and soundtrack was mediocre. Not sure about Command and Conquer 4, C&C3 wasn't too bad...

[Edit] Starcraft II's voice-acting - Yes, some are pretty damn good but the Protoss completely lost it's woah...feeling. Compare the original units next to the newer one's VA. The archon, ghost and pretty much the whole protoss are never going to be as cool/awesome like the previous.

Feel free to post your opinions. Including how it sucked or needed to be changed in aspects. Feel free to add in games that you thought got BETTER than their preprocessors....

Have fun!

Anything by Peter Molyneux (sp?). Oh no wait, that's just a dream of mine. Personally, any credit he had about the quality of the games he "creates" died long ago...

I strongly disagree, I bought the soundtrack it was so good, I love how they took alot of the old songs and threw new twists into them. The Russian choir music was superb too, especially since it was performed by an actual choir who specialize in Slavic chants.

I think the most obvious example is Deus Ex: Invisible War, which almost everyone hates and anyone who says they like it on the internet is usually eaten by grues. Eventually.

But what's this, Deus Ex 3 is coming out? I am skeptical at best.

Thoroughly agreed with.. The narcissist is just walking bag of hot air. Not since the Y2K bug has there been a more unfounded sack of hype.

As for the death of a franchise.. I'd say NWN2 pretty much caused it's own demise, buggy, unfinished and lacking components that made the first an innovation and a classic. By the time the expansions came along that were 'supposed' to fix it (and it took TWO expansions to get close) few people gave a shit and because of that I doubt a 3rd game would have a tenth of the original's audience.

Final Fantasy. Sagatouchi Japaneselastname left Square Enix after FF9, and started his own company named "Mistwalker studios" and made the Lost Odyssey. This is just my own personal opinion, but Final Fantasy has gotten worse since then.

Metroid, I have to say. Everything before Other M portrayed Samus as *the* most badass woman in existence, with two emotions, mild surprise, and a near genocidal hatred for anything related to Space Pirates/RandomEvilThing.

With Other M, it turned her into a whining, doubting, extremely submissive woman who is paralyzed with fear when she sees Ridley. Despite her usual reaction being "Well damn, guess I'll kill it again".

And more likely than not, future games will be based off her Other M incarnation.

Aww, this made me sad. I like Peter and the games he has made. I'm only upset that he hasn't made a new Black & White since the second was a bit of a let down.

And the Fable games, in my opinion, have gotten better with each new iteration.

I know some people here (A lot) will disagree with me but I'm going to say Left 4 Dead..

My friends and the people I've played with played Left 4 Dead 1 all the time almost since release, and then when Left 4 Dead 2 came out they either tried it and didn't like it or liked it better, then ultimately became bored of it after a month.. The ones who became bored never came back. *sad face*

I wont even buy Other M for that exact reason. I don't mind the voice dialogue and story aspect but they trashed my memory of Samus. I just file it under "non-canon" and move on.

L4d2 was a hit or miss for people and the people who did like it moved on and only pull it out at a desperate attempt at fun it's sad really but at the same time it's.....eh i got nothing anyway it was pop, spark, fizzle

I'd agree. But upgrading a lack luster game into a slightly better lack luster game is not a great stride. It might be better if he just made the game instead of promising to allow the player to become GOD.

I agree, I think the only reason L4D2 has ~10k players a day is because Valve is constantly putting that game on sale.. It's on sale right now actually, haha..

No, I think that L4D2 has far better gameplay mechanics that draws the crowds in droves. The problem is not one of those people recognize that L4D2 is a shallow piece of trash and nothing like the original. Seriously, what got me to instantly love L4D was the genuine feel of a zombie survival horror movie. L4D2 is just a zombie slaughterfest that has the protagonists laughing at the wanton destruction of all the infected people around them.

OT: Supreme Commander 2. Another failure by Square-Enix. Gone is anything that was good about the original SupCom, and instead we get a poor Starcraft clone that no one cares about because it's not Starcraft. Supcom's spiritual predecessor is the reason why I never played Starcraft. It was good, unique, and just tons more of what I wanted in a RTS than what Starcraft offered.

I disagree with that one, I rather liked NWN2 and its singleplayer component is far superior to the original NWN's, especially when the expansions are also taken into account. I also prefer small squad management over controlling a single character, which is all you could do with NWN 1. People also tend to forget that when NWN was first released, it was incredibly buggy and flawed as well. It's only with two expansions itself that it really became the game we all know and love!

Anyway, that aside I'd have to say... hmm...

Deus Ex: Invisible Wars. True, there's a new game for the series coming out in the future which looks like it might have promise, but its by an entirely new team creating their vision of the Deus Ex universe, not that of the series original creators. No, they Ion Storm went down with Invisible Wars, and not even Thief 3 could stop the demise they spelled for themselves with that game. Invisible Wars was just such a disappointment to so many people that Ion Storm lost their good will and even Thief 3, which while not brilliant was certainly a solid entry into the Thief series, could bring that back.
