I want to know what games looked great pre-production, but failed to impress you once they were in your hands?

For me the most disappointing game was Black Ops. The last CoD game I played was CoD 3 and my friends kept talking about Black Ops and how great the multiplayer was. I put in the disk, joined a game and was greeted by swearing children and campers galore.

So, Escapists, what games disappointed you?

Most recent has to be Medal of Honour, especially I held in high esteem the people creating it. Everything is bismal, the online is a snooze and the campaign is as engaging as a dead bunny. Even the high quality graphics make the game look like shit. I literally liked nothing about the game.
And don't even get me started on Duke Nukem...

Dragon Age 2 was a big disappointment for me recently. I had never played Dragon Age Origins but I had been interested in the series for a while, so when I had some money to spare I went out and bought the game second-hand for ?40 and as soon as I started playing I regretted my decision to buy this game. It is obviously for very particular audiences and it definitely wasn't for me.

FEAR 2 didn't feel anything like the original. It had a weird "highlight enemies" thing that made it feel like a cartoon. It completely missed the horror aspects of the first game. And the weapon sounds weren't as good. It had no atmosphere. I'm pretending it was a one game series.

If you thought Fear 2 was bad I assume you were disgusted at Fear 3.

Well, I wasn't interested in these games pre-production, but rather post-launch.

Fallout 3: I was in the mood for a good RPG and fuck, Fallout 3 had won multiple game of the year awards, so I thought "Sure." Then I got my hands on it and wondered what the fuck was so great about it. Hell, even good about. Hell, even DECENT about it.
The "Power of choice" shit that's the very first point on the back of the box is well... shit, the weapons are unbalanced, the skills are unbalanced and there is no atmosphere whatsoever.

Mass Effect 2: I was, again, in the mood for a lengthy RPG, so, again, like an idiot, I trusted the general opinion and picked up another game that won multiple game of the year awards. This time, I'll give you that it wasn't a bad game. It just wasn't a good game either. The one sentence that sums up my opinion is "It fails to impress me." It was just so fucking average.

Dragon Age 2. Honestly, the game isn't even bad, it's pretty mediocre but I've played many worse games. No, what made it disappointing for me was that there was so much potential. I would not have mind staying in the city for most of the game, if the dungenons were varied and what you did actually effected the city itself. I wanted the city to evolve as the story went on, change in appearance and have different NPCs but nope. Not to mention, out of all of BioWare's games, it's the most obvious here that your choices have little to no bearing on how the game plays out anyway.

Every Silent Hill game since part 3. My heart weeps for those days.

I also cringed while playing Splinter Cell: Conviction. I bought a 360 in 2007 to play it and it took 2 years of delays to come out. Worst of all, it was a great game but it wasn't Splinter Cell.

Mafia II. Give me more story! I got involved in the world and it just ends.

I miss Joe. I wonder what happened to him?

I'll say Modern Warfare 2. I liked Modern Warfare, and I enjoyed Black Ops, but MW2 filled me with so much hate. To me it just felt like they took Call of Duty 4, then got rid of the fun single player, and then released what was essentially the exact same game. I was not happy.

I was also dissapointed by Super Smash Bros Brawl, for similar reasons.

The import feature was completely pointless. The only thing I can trace form the Origins into 2 is who I chose to be king and the fact that people remembered that I hadn't died after killing the Arch-Demon. That was it. Otherwise, pointless and a stupid thing to create an achievement for (either completing a game with an import or beating the game twice).

And I guess Leliana being alive is important too, except I never played whatever section of the regular game or the DLC where she is able to die. So, whatevs on that too.

Edit - OT: Fable 2. Didn't even finish the game. I think I got far enough that I saved the Hero of Will after being locked in the tower thing for... years? A decade? Not really sure on that one... Anyway, I just completely lost interest in the game. The story didn't capture me; having to hold a regular job to make actual $ was stupid, most characters were completely forgettable, although I remember the bad guy who wore the antlers on his head. I mean, I FELL ASLEEP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY while playing this game. It can't get much worse than that.

Lets just say that when Sonic and Mario went 3D it was no longer a competition. That was when Sonic died for me. :(

Kane & Lynch 2.

THE MOST disappointed I've ever been by a game right there (I didn't expect Duke Nukem to be great so I wasn't really hurt there). I was such a fan of the story and characters of the first game, but the sequel completely stripped the main characters of everything that made them so likeable. Kane was a character who I really felt sorry for as the first game progressed, and Lynch was genuinely the craziest, most psychopathic character I've ever seen in a game (which is saying a lot). But in the sequel, Kane had no character whatsoever and Lynch was just a guy in a tank top with a gun.

And that's just the characters. Don't even get me started on the gameplay.

The Eragon movie game. It was actually bought for me before I saw the movie, and at the time I was a huge fan of the Eragon series. As soon as I played it, I wanted to vomit, repeatedly. Then I saw the movie... oh god...

Killzone 2.

Too much hype. I was thoroughly disappointed in the game as a whole.

I find that when a movie is bad, the game turns out to be the same... Especially considering direct movie-game tie-ins never turn out so good.
