Gears of War is terrible to me. The graphics bore me, the combats boring, the story...meh.
The graphics bored you? How do the graphics... Oh, wait, Gears? Yeah, brown and grey are kind of dull. The fact that all of the characters are also brown (Locust) or dressed in grey (COG) doesn't help...
The GTA series, once it went 3D. Actually, even the 2D ones weren't that great, I just have nostalgia goggles. Or I was about 8 when I was playing them, and liked the idea of playing an 18 rated game...
Well, that too. In all actuality, it was... I honestly can't explain it. They were obviously quite good, but the design of the buildings and such wasn't exactly my cup of tea. The bulky characters were extremely detailed, but they just lacked any creativity. I felt that the suits, though well designed, were rather bland. In my opinion, only the guns were truly mind blowing (Unless seen up close). My mind muddles itself with it's own contradictions. They look good... but at the same time they don't.
Also, while on the subject of Grand Theft Auto...
I have often heard people talk about their dislike of the game, for a lot of different reasons. Whether it's the crude humor, the excessive swearing, or even the acclaimed free-roaming gameplay. These are usually creditable and actually fact (Lame aiming system, absurd driving physics both arcade and simulation, sub-par graphics), but it's the spirit of the game that draws most of it's fans in. It seems that for the most part the thrill doesn't come from the mechanics, but from the sense of freedom and often goofy situations.
Some +'s include:
1)Alternating crude, pop culture insulting, light, dark, etc. humor.
2)Absurd missions and mostly likable characters (Even the antagonists you will love to hate).
3)Just an opinion, but they usually have well-written stories. Maybe not always in the dialog department, but the feeling of advancement is there for the most part. In Vice City, you really did feel like you were rising to the top. Every mission brought you closer to personal wealth and respect. *Minor Spoilers* In fact, the opening premise of getting the money back fades into a narrative of revenge and increasing power. *Perhaps Bigger Spoiler* When you finally complete the missions for your slowly obtained business's (Which are just as well played and written as the main game), and arrogantly face off with your previous boss, you feel like the leader. You feel like the boss. You feel like you own the city. Even the final cutscene made you feel, for lack of a more humble yet equal explanation, like a complete and maniacal badass. Not all of them are like this, but Vice City *really* captured the feel.
4)Car chases, when at their finest, give a pure rush of adrenalin. Even after extended play, they still more often than not quicken your pulse. Almost every one is different. Holing up on a building and fending off the encroaching and increasingly dangerous police, while occasionally keeping an eye to a sky in case they receive air cover, is a real treat.
5)It was (for the most part) the original free-roamer. It brought that particular style of game into the main stream, for better or for worse.
I guess I can see why people don't always enjoy it. It's not always good at what it does, and it's often monotonous and repetitive in it's design. When you do enjoy playing it however, it really is an enjoyable time waster.
Which of the games in the series have you played if I may ask?
