Modern Warfare 3. I was just expecting to have a fun ride like MW2, but instead I got a mostly boring game.
I would say Dead Island, but I actually read up on all that stuff and watched gameplay trailers. So I knew what I got when I bought it.
Marvel VS Capcom 3. It was fun for a bit, but after unlocking everyone in a single sitting, and them making the game obsolete less than a year, I decided I wouldn't be buying another Capcom Fighting game.
Asura's Wrath, I haven't played it, but I was going to buy it when I found out the real ending is DLC. Stay classy Capcom.
Spore, went in expecting Amazing Island but better, got space spice trading simulator. What.

Hellgate London for me. I got it as one of the first games when I got a new laptop. The computer I had prior to then was a pentium 4. I thought I was going to experience Diablo 2 in a modern day setting, but what I got was an entire game of sewer levels. Even the levels that don't take place in sewers were a winding corridor.

Skyrim...

I should have known
Agreed, Skyrim was not as fabulous as it was made out to be before release. Being a TES fanboy pulled the wool over my eyes.
Yeah add me to the Skyrim group. It was just such a let down which means (for me anyway) that Morrowind was the last good one :/ I won't bother in the future I don't think.

Dragon Age 2

I liked it a lot and didn't hate it with a seething passion that could melt the poles like the rest of the site but I would be lying if I didn't say it was a very big step in the wrong direction.

I still have mixed feelings about my Mass Effect 3: N7 Collector's Edition.

Because as much as I hate how the game was rushed together, it does in a sense become a love letter to the previous two games... and I love having that collector's tin with female Shepard on it.

Bah.

Well I guess I will say it then. Duke nukem forever. I mean I didn't wait 12 years and stuff but I hyped myself to it. Pre loaded it and stuff. I did have fun on it though (kinda). But I just couldn't really play it again. Hmmm maybe I should go do that again sometime.

ME3 and

Spore. Why EA? why did you butcher this gem? You ruined it, now hurry up and make a sequel that the original was supposed to be!
I know it's a "cool thing" to hate EA these days, but the problem with Spore was the exact same problem of Fable, Black & White, etc: Peter Molyneaux's big fat mouth and big fat promises that are always under-delivered.

No More Heroes; everyone (even Yahtzee) said it was great. It was all repetitive combat with tedious minigames based on jobs we usually give to immigrants all wrapped up in the most pointless open world ever. There were a couple of memorable bosses but it wasn't worth the trouble getting to them. That was when I stopped trusting the opinion of reviewers.
And for the record, I like Suda51 personally (he's awsome) but I just can't get into his games.

I've had games I bought because I thought they'd be ok (I liked the Too Human demo but the full game turned out to be crap) but I've never bought a game on hype that I turned out to be disappointed with.

A dark, apocalyptic roguelike dungeon crawler? What could go wrong?

Oh wait.

- Enemies stealing your currently equipped gear, leaving you high and dry.
- Literally impossible to progress plot without a guide (across several lives)
- Your only ranged weapon having 5 shots to last you the whole life
- Clunky, awkward controls. Annoying traps, and annoying enemies.
- Without progressing the plot, being limited to only the first 16 floors out of 100, see point 2.

Honestly, if the game hinted at what needed to be done and made it possible to advance the plot without forcing a guide (Step 1 of advancing the plot is running into something you're supposed to shoot instead, for like 10 seconds, until you get an alternate ending, wait, what?) It might have been decent, but I didn't have net access during my time with that game.

I would have loved to have pieced together the protagonists's shattered, distorted past, what with the cryptic endings and the people who seemed to know him (and hate him) for something he did in a past life, but it was just literally impossible without a guide.

The only thing I remember actually liking about the game was that there was a status ailment called Lust. It made enemies and items alike look like women, for mass visual confusion. Plus, there was even an item called the Eros Brand that boosted your stats while afflicted with Lust. This is a very unique effect and it was neat to see it actually done, since IRL, "lust" is an even more deadly ailment than (food) poisoning, as an example.

Why, what happened?

.
well I got it as a presant

but basically there were things that I kind of knew would put me off

1. granted the game looks nice from a graphical standpoint, but its still that dull "realistic fantasy" look
2. lack of interesting charachters/story <- or even if the story is there there's no motivation to follow it
3. I played for 7 hours and never touched it since..I just don't want to
Same. I was a bit hyped for it, but after playing it for a few hours I just... Well, wasn't sucked in at all and got bored. It didn't hook my like Oblivion did.

Dead Rising 2.
I don't think it's a bad game, but it was made out to be more than it actually was and a few of my mates bought it almost straight away and loved it, and on top of that it got a positive review from Yahtzee of all people, so I thought it had to be pretty good.
I could never bring myself to go through the effort of finishing it, though. I got to roughly the half way point about 3 times but just couldn't be bothered to slog my way to the ending because I just lost all interest and wasn't a fan of the impending time limit looming over me the whole time.
I just wasn't that into it, which is a shame

Bully for Wii. The controls were just so awful that there was no way I could even begin to enjoy the game.

I also almost bought Ultima IX. Dodged a bullet there.
