First game that comes to mind for me is Street Fighter II. Even on medium setting that game can be annoyingly difficult but I just keep coming back for more. Perhaps I'm just not that good at fighting games, still I can't help but love it. Also I would say COD4, that game on veteran mode had me dropping more F bombs than Christian Bale on his DP guy.

Tales of the Abyss, I swear I hated the main character for AT LEAST 2/3's of that game but I liked almost everything else so I just couldn't hate it as a whole.

If you found Street Fighter II annoying, don't play ANY SNK fighting game.

The game that had me cussing a blue streak the longest was Ninja Gaiden Black I believe.

Mirror's Edge. No matter how many times I died I couldn't stop playing that game.

On, and Captain Spectacular, I hereby declare your avatar as being epic.

Far Cry 2 for a while. I understood why it was so hard. Then I bought good guns and now I love it.

Soldier Front 1.49. Seriously, that is a stupidly fun game, but everyone who plays it has insane twitch skills that keep people from getting any better. The sad thing is that I could suck and still have a great time trying to keep up with these pros.

Even if approximately 74% of them are obnoxious. That can get on peoples' nerves.

Dead Rising. No matter how stupid the AI survivors are, or how annoying the phone calls are, or how bad some of the dialogue is: nothing will surpass the hilarity of the first time you use the Excavator to drill a zombie and turn him into a pinwheel of gore and zombie murder.

I add Gothic 3: A huge load of bugs but there is so much love and detail in the world that you love exploring every corner.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. this game has brilliant gameplay, locations and generally climate.
Brillinat seems to be your oponents too, because they can shoot as devils almost from every given distance. Acurately. From sub-machinegun. And they respawn.

I am surprised no one has mentioned...

DIABLO 2

Jesus, the game is incredibly long, and has you running round for hours fighting wave after wave after wave of enemies that you slowly slog your way through, and every fucking mission is either a kill quest or a fetch quest. This game is the bane of my existence and I am finding that working my way through Hell difficulty (the way you actually finish the game) is more of a chore than fun. But I am still playing it, because while the grind and quests represent everything I loathe about a game, its a truly wonderful masterpiece and I can't stop playing it.

Bah.

Castle Crashers. The last boss levels are infuriating by yourself, but the art style and sense of humor is so infectious that I can't help but continue to like the game.

Silverfall. Time after time you get killed, but you will love the world that's around.

Twilight Princess; sometimes the combat is just ugh! and Link is highly disobedient but at the same time I was having too much fun solving the puzzles to quit.
