I'd say any game from the 8-bit or 16-bit eras that is genuinely competently made.

I noticed the newest "Games that have aged poorly" thread and decided to make a counter thread. What is a game that has aged astoundingly well?
Paper Mario and the thousand year door, it's about 7 years old now, and there isn't a single thing I would change even with all of the new technology available.

As a guy who loves adventure games I'd say most of the good 90's adventure games still hold up pretty well (if you can bloody well play them...).

Never seems much love for those games on here, I don't understand why. Shooty games get very boring for me very fast. That isn't to say I hate them, I just can't play them as much as other people. I certainly wouldn't be arsed online with these things.

Edit: I forgot to mention Zelda: Link to the Past and Wind Waker. The latter as far as I'm concerned is still a beautiful looking game and both play very well.

People might disagree but I'm going to say Total Annihilation. It's a game that I still have to have install immediately any time I get a new PC. Even Supcom failed to live up to that game, no RTS has ever come close to sucking me in the way that game did. Just listening the epic soundtrack while your gunships tear into enemy Pewees or the way your Big Berthas rumble and shake the screen fills me with glee. It obviously doesn't look great - the top-down camera saves the visual aspect of the game somewhat as there are no clunky 3d models flying around - but the gameplay is still as refreshing to me today as it was then.

Meh, that game was too ahead of its time. Everything feels sluggish, camera is awful and the framerate drops way down when the game gets busy.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island still looks fantastic on my large tele.

Visually, I think Mafia has aged pretty well, and the gameplay's pretty timeless.

Does KOTOR count? I only saying that since my bro (who is graphic over gameplay) got put off for its graphic.

Also avoiding what others had said already I would say Golden Sun 1 & 2, Advance Wars, R-Type and Metroid Prime.

Tetris (1984)
Super Mario Bros (1985)
Wasteland (1988)
Super Bomber Man (1993)
Wario's Woods (1994)
Metal Warriors (1995)
Master of Orion II (1996)
Total Annihilation (1997)
Quake 3 (1999)
Rise of Nations (2003)
Ground Control 2 (2004)

I feel like a lot of these games had slick controls or a good interface and it makes them a joy to play, I have played them all in the last couple years and found them to be great fun.

+1 for Quake III

Morrowind. Graphics are eh, but the sheer amount of stuff in there more than makes up for it. Replay value is just...wow.
