I noticed the newest "Games that have aged poorly" thread and decided to make a counter thread. What is a game that has aged astoundingly well?

I'd have to go with chess master :p On a serious note street fighter 2 is still very playable.

I'm thinking the original Final Fantasy Tactics has aged really well.

It's an incredibly playable game with tons of replay value. The graphics aren't 3D, but then again, they don't need to be. The new cut scenes in the PSP re-release were nice to see, but the rewritten script & voice acting were alittle strange. That's why I prefer the original over the remake.

Street Fighter 2 is still awesome, very few games age as well as that has. The revisions helped that too, it's an incredibly balanced and well made fighter, especially considering it set the groundwork for every fighting game after it (before it fighters were shit, just look at the original Street Fighter, it's a barely playable pile of shit).

I say Goldeneye has aged well, sure the graphics and other areas are dated, but the environments still look very nice for the most part and it has a surprising amount of detail. The gameplay is still fantastic and it's still the best FPS I've played. Perfectly blended elements of stealth and action, plus the stages were designed very well and the objectives weren't spoon-fed to you. It really did make you feel like you were on a mission. The multiplayer is still a blast with friends as well. It's nostalgic, but I know people who still play it to this day and discover new things, myself included. *insert obligatory "FPS games are shit now, the good old days are gone" old man-esque comment*

Tetris. No matter how much time goes, you can't deny that the satisfaction from finally getting one of those I-shaped blocks is greater than eating chocolate, having sex and taking a dump at the same time. I can't believe I just wrote that.

Ok, Max Payne is still an amazing game.
Get out of my brain!!

I'm also gonna have to go with the obligatory X-Com. Ok, the graphics are dire by today's standards but it is still a very fun game.

captcha: inquid 140. I would indeed like 140 quid please.

Getting an I-shaped block? Yes, and it was the greatest feeling ever.

Most 2D games age well. Sure early Atari games have aged horribly, but they were never considered pretty to begin with.

As far as early 3D goes... Thief 1 and 2, Deus Ex, and System Shock 2 are all perfectly playabe, if only a tad polygon-challenged.

Turn-based strategy games such as Heroes of Might and Magic 3, or Master of Orion 2.

Pinball machines .. a buddy just refurbished an Addam's Family machine and it's awesome.
(the OP didn't say video game .. but since these were in arcades I figured they count)

Puzzle Pirates.
Yes, I'm being serious. Ok, it was only released in 2003, so it's hardly an ancient game, but this puzzle based MMO (yes, mmo ... people work various jobs on ships, run the economy, even conquer islands .. all based on puzzles) is pure genius.

SMB3 and World, Yoshi's Island, DKC 1, 2 and 3, things like that. A lot of SNES era games aged well. They were at the height of well done 2D games, so they looked nice then and can still look very nice now. They all worked within what was familiar to them and fully developed, the earlier forgoers into 3D didn't have much luck with how their games aged.

System Shock 2 looks surprisingly good. Better if you get the higher resolution upgrade patch that some fans made. (Deus Ex looks awful now)

Heroes 3 as the above poster said. You can get a resolution patch for that which makes it even more awesome, can see most of the large maps on one screen.

Descent 3 is pretty good also.

Zelda, particularly Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, have stood up nicely in the face of time. Okami as well, which still looks fantastic.

I'd say Oddworld Abe's Oddysee and Exodus. They're simple 2D platformers that have an amazing setting, incredible atmosphere and constantly has me on the edge of my seat even today. It's just so fun.

Unreal Tournament I'd say is just as fun if not more fun than most shooters today. Hearing "ULTRA KILL MONSTER KILL GODLIKE UNSTOPPABLE" etc, is awesome.
