Games that haven't aged well....

We all have a favorite game we love to revisit.
Sometimes that visit is less of a family reunion and more of a trip to the assisted-living home.

For me, it would probably be Super Mario World for the GBA. While I wasn;t good at is as a kid, I'm waaaaaay worse now.

This was inspired by me wondering if Metal Gear Solid 1 has aged well, for someone who's never played it, because I want to get into the series from the beginning, since all the games are critically acclaimed.

So, what personal favorites of yours have aged particularly poorly?

MGS has aged...poorly.

The story is great, but the general gameplay has not aged too well.

Anyway, Spyro has aged liked fried shit, thanks to modern camera control!

MGS hasn't aged well, but it's still really good. It's like back then, it was awe-inspiring, now it's just pretty good. Personally, I say get remake The Twin Snakes if that option is possible.

I've got some in mind, but I'll put them up later.

Get it for the $10. The plot is necessary. I've only played MGS1, because I don't want to play 2 and 3 just to play 4.

Never was into action games in the PS2 era, so I passed on MGS.

Just played 1 a few months back.

I'm not willing to further invest myself into the series.

I think it is a personal taste thing. I have a friend who can stand anything from the playstation era because the early 3d graphics look bad to him... he uses the argument that they don't age well. However, they don't bother me at all, which leads me to believe that it is not about the game itself but about how we perceive the game.

It's worth that, I still think it looks pretty decent as it's well past the point where graphics held back gameplay. If you go straight for the sequel you may be put off for life.

It's worth that, I still think it looks pretty decent as it's well past the point where graphics held back gameplay. If you go straight for the sequel you may be put off for life.

Really? I find the original Spyro games as easy to play as ever, they've aged no worse than something like Mario 64.

Easily worth it. The story is top notch and the only bad thing about the gameplay is that MGS2 improves on it a huge amount.

Super Mario RPG and Earthbound are two of my top old favorites but they still play well. I recently replayed them both actually.

Zelda Ocarina of Time was one of my favorites but now the game hurts my head to try and play. Something about the graphics makes it difficult to enjoy. So that's the game I can't bring myself to play now.

Yeah... gotta agree to that. a lot of the "3D" stuff on the 64 or the PS1 (and some PS2) games are pretty bad to look at now. Nothing against the games themselves.

I'm gonna feel like a heretic saying this but I hated the level design in Mario 64.

edit: ^ I think there are some PS1/N64 era games that still look good. Especially stuff like Final Fantasy/Resident Evil with their 2d backgrounds.

Age of Empires

It was the last RTS not to feature unit queuing. This is a feature we take for granted and it makes the game unplayable now.

Freedom Fighters. As much as I love this game I gotta admit the controls are very clunky when compared to the standard Third Person Shooter controls of today. Graphics are also a little murky but only because the art style could have been a little stronger.

I know someone who refuses to play WoW (he used to) because the graphics look terrible.
I felt like slapping him.

Anyways, Define "age"

Because if you think it's gameplay, then i think no game has aged poorly... because that's how they came out. If it's graphics, yet again slapped in the face. Of course newer games will look better. But if it's the story, then... well back to the first thing.
