MGS has aged...poorly.

The story is great, but the general gameplay has not aged too well. Then again, MGS4 still used the annoying shoulder button inventory system...
Okay, so is it worth the $10 or so on PSN, or should I skip straight to MGS2?
It's worth that, I still think it looks pretty decent as it's well past the point where graphics held back gameplay. If you go straight for the sequel you may be put off for life.
Sounds good.
I've hear that the controls are kinda funky, but I can deal.
Play MGS on the gamecube. Its a remake of the PS1 version with better graphics and controls.

The Conflict games. To be more precise, Desert Storm 2 and Global Terror. The reason why? Because it was the first video game I'd ever played, and therefore, I overlooked dozens, if not hundreds of it's flaws.

It's still a decent co-op game to come back to and play when you're bored, but it takes an almost masochistic amount of patience to get through some of the levels and put up with the stupid AI.

Everyone saying that MGS 1 has aged poorly i agree still it's a great game the only thing that has aged for me is the gameplay nowadays is very basic but back then it was revolutionary the game implement 3D environments and it was more tactical than other games of the time

I think I'da have to go with a game that I didn't play until long after its release, but that people told me was good so I tried it out:

Kid Icarus

Seriously, whatever was supposed to be good about that game must have just been relatively good, because at Yatzee would have said it: People were used to eating shit for breakfast - and their own ass for lunch.

It's also, like, thirty bucks on Amazon.
That is not a cheap Gamecube game.

The original 3 Resident Evil games, and Dino Crisis 1 and 2.

They now both look and play terribly.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that, my friend.
As someone who only picked them up in late 2009/ early 2010, I found that the Resident Evil titles, while the tank controls are a little off-putting, have held up fairly well.
I found RE1's design made it almost literally unplayable. I started with enough ammo do down maybe three zombies, and the knife GUARANTEES you will get hit at least once per kill. I try to dodge zombies, but every environment is so narrow, I can't! After finding out I could not pick up the key I needed to continue the game required me to find a box for an item I had, rather than, say, DROP IT! I quit. I really liked RE4, but the oldest games are the definition of dated gameplay mechanics. Although the cutscenes were a riot.

Jumping Flash. It was one of the first playstation games I ever owned and I love it, but MY GOD. Those graphics and colors. I can barely see anything that's going on. I'm sure there are videos of it on YouTube. You'll see what I mean.

Thank you! The AI and controls are a bit dated, but they work a lot better than plenty of other games on the PS, and the story is better (I think) than the MGS game that came out this generation.

Ouch. One of those irritating games that are great but impossible to get hold of for a good price.

I'm looking at you Shadow of the Colossus...

RE1 is terrible. 2 & 3 is where it's really at. They brought the best out of what the genre had to offer.

Actually, Shadow is only about $10 or so on Amazon.

Buh?1 For reals?!

The cheapest I can see on amazon.co.uk is the equivalent of $34.

How irritating.

I played MGS2 before the first game, that made MGS age poorly because of all the gameplay improvements in the sequel.

I like MGS series, but PC versions of those games didn't age well. Cannot play them because of the hardware issues.

Wow, you guys have exorbitant game prices.
I talked with another guy here about him only being able to find FFIX for crazy money, and he was from the UK, too.

Yeah stuff like the hugely popular (or criminally underrated) games of the PS1 era are hard to get cheap over here.
