I think it is a personal taste thing. I have a friend who can stand anything from the playstation era because the early 3d graphics look bad to him... he uses the argument that they don't age well. However, they don't bother me at all, which leads me to believe that it is not about the game itself but about how we perceive the game.
I know someone who refuses to play WoW (he used to) because the graphics look terrible.
I felt like slapping him.

Anyways, Define "age"

Because if you think it's gameplay, then i think no game has aged poorly... because that's how they came out. If it's graphics, yet again slapped in the face. Of course newer games will look better. But if it's the story, then... well back to the first thing.
Good point.
It's just that a lot of games are ridiculously hard now, with all the checkpoints, infinite respawns, and such that we have now.
It's really just how you want to interpret it, though.
What's your definition of a game aging poorly?

To be fair...Playing it on the PSP rerelease. It's aged fine.

But if you hooked up the PS1 to play it...Yeah. It's aged like shit.

Yeah I think they're just going for games if you try to play now that are older than the current gen consoles. But even now if I tried to make a top 10 of my most favorite games from start to finish, Earthbound would make its way on there--even though it's an older game. I don't feel like it has aged. You could slap Earthbound in a DS cartridge and I'd bet it would sell.

Do you mean a lot of OLD games? or a lot of new games are ridic hard.

In which case i then slap the gamer again and say "Well learn to play better"

I don't really have a definition of a game aging poorly, because i've yet to see a game, as i got older, progressively get worse. I might get a sudden realization that "oh man this feature about the game is out of date" But i'll never say "Oh man... this game fucking blows."

I think by "aged" people are referring to how they hold up against modern games. As an analogy, it is like once you have had really good cheese you can never go back to eating Velveeta. Or something.

I have a (different) friend who won't play turn based RPGs after playing FFXII because, for him, after playing a game like XII he can't go back to the old turn based "select a command and press a" style of combat. Will still a matter of taste, I can sort of understand this. It is hard for me to get into some of the old SNES RPGs because after playing with more active systems, I just don't find any fun in the old ones. (I'm still not as bad as him, though.)

Pretty much trumps everything else in the "not dying doing well" department.

I'd say Final Fantasy 7, when it came onto PSN it was pretty cool to be playing it out where and whenever I liked. However that wore off quickly and it was like, ok not point in going on. Also the graphics pale compared to some rpgs we can play on mobile systems. Persona 3 Portable comes to mind.

Anyway, Spyro has aged liked fried shit, thanks to modern camera control!
Really? I find the original Spyro games as easy to play as ever, they've aged no worse than something like Mario 64.
Oh god. You think Mario 64 aged well...No wonder you don't mind Spyro.

I find Mario 64 to be absolute rubbish at this point, with the advances of Sunshine and Galaxy.
Ok Mario 64 is kind of a bad example x3 I can't think of any 3D platformers to compare it to though, I just think the original Spyro games are brilliant.

I think it would hold up better if it had better out of combat character models.

Every 3D game on Nintendo 64, PlayStation and Sega Saturn. While old-school retro 2D is hip and charming, these games are embarrassingly ugly and dated.

The original 3 Resident Evil games, and Dino Crisis 1 and 2.

They now both look and play terribly.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that, my friend.
As someone who only picked them up in late 2009/ early 2010, I found that the Resident Evil titles, while the tank controls are a little off-putting, have held up fairly well.

I have a universal taste, if i like something once, i'll probably like it again 10 years down the line. Like Legend of Dragoon, I'll agree it does look very pixely, it's still fun. I don't play games for the graphics... that's what movies and real life is for.

I would disagree entirely. They're so rooted in specific play-styles that go hand in hand with the gaming generation they're from. There isn't anything quite like the old survival horror style going around right now (that I know of anyway) and that helps to make them still feel fresh.

I like to think that Legend of Dragoon will be a well remembered underrated classic in ten years due to it's lack of milking and sequel stagnation.

Well that's not entirally true. His original adventures have aged marvelously since everyone seems to look on them with rose-tinted glasses 10" thick.

Games not franchises you fool.

As for the subect matter, PS1 era fighting games, time has not been kind to, Tekken 3, the original Guilty Gear, Thrill Kill, yeah no.

Pretty much all the Final Fantasies pre 10 have been somewhat put through the ringer, but not so much that they're bad now (except for Final Fantasy 7 graphically looks... ridiculous).

But for me the king of bad aging is the original monkey island game, probably the adventure game as an entire genre. I used to love them, now, god they piss me off.

I'm gonna have to say the original Quake. I played it and it was kinda fun, but the graphics bothered me. NOt because they were old, of course not. It's because everything was this disgusting dark brown. That kinda lessened my experience with it.

The early polygon-based games, such as "Starfox", "Zelda: OoT" and "Virtua Fighter" have dated very badly IMO.
