While I'm not the target audience, I can imagine any sort of "pink" or "family friendly casual" games usually get that sort of feeling in the recipient crowd. You don't just substitute being witty and well-formed for being simple and easily understood. A game can be small and easily accessible, but still have real purpose behind it.

Like Yahtzee said in EP: Wet, there's a certain hate I have for female figures of hatred, like Lara Croft or the protagonist of Wet, who was so forgetable I can't actually remember her name.

Also, I loved Phoenix Wright, but whenever I view promotional materials for the next Ace Attorney games, I feel like I'm part of some completely different demographic. I liked the intricate cases and complex story-driven puzzle-solving, but I think most other people seem to be interested in writing some sort of fan-fiction.

Damn, I went into this thinking Ninja Gaiden. Um...

Resident Evil, 5! They changed Jill into a blonde bimbo for American audiences, and the whole fight with her is nothing but fanservice!
I take it you haven't heard of the new RE5 in the works. A whole new chapter setting up the fight with Jill.

You're using a pretty broad brush there. I'm sure there are some JRPGs out there that don't follow all the annoying trends.
Name 5
Dark Cloud 1/2 and Steambot Chronicles are both titles that use unique concepts and mechanics, (build towns and giant steampunk robots, respectively) as a primary selling point, have real-time combat, and take place in fictional versions of the 19th Century. The protagonists, in the same order, are mute (I haven't played the first Dark Cloud, so I don't know much), a fantasy Thomas Edison, and an amnesiac sailor.

The up-coming Resonance of Fate, made by the same people who developed Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, is going to blend turn-based strategy with real-time gun fights and takes place in a steampunk/1984 setting with a malfunctioning computer government. The director, Takayuki Suguro, says he's no longer inspired by swords-and-sorcery fantasy, so he wants to do something different.

For the remaining two slots to your 5-game quota, I suggest Kingdom Hearts and anything by Team-Ico. What Kingdom Hearts has in the way of JRPG cliches, it makes up for with the Disney aspect. And the Ico games, those are simply art.
Mate look, I typed that as a joke, mainly because so many jrpgs out there are just whiny teenagers with silly hair and big weapons, and the few that try to be unique are overshadowed by the legacy those afforementioned games leave (Mind you this is coming from a guy who doesn't like turn-based combat, never got into anime and is shunned but shuns the hardcore members of communities based around the genre.) In short I wasn't really expecting a serious answer, but you raise a good point, jrpgs should be less...well...JRPG-ish.

I actually find the target audience i belong to is pretty well-fed. Brutal Legend, Guitar Hero Metallica... metal head gamers have it made :p

All the ultra "I'm so rough and tough KILL KILL KILLLL BLAAAARRGGG" games like Gears of war. They generally have nothing going for them.

TNA Impact: The Game. I am a fan of TNA wrestling, and I play video games, so yeah, I was the target audience. I'm insulted, because they spent nearly 3 year making the game, and it was BAD. Yet, WWE can make a new Smackdown vs Raw game every year, and they are all GREAT. Impact 2, if it ever comes out, better be RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME.
Word. I only bought the game because I support TNA. I respect the fact they were trying to do something different, but...seriously, the first thing I thought when I played the game was, "Why didn't they just copy the formula for WWE games?" ...I guess because there would have been a lawsuit, but, still - they had a perfect model for how to make a good wrestling game and they ignored it. oO They could have even just copied the controls (as in, making them good) and I would have liked it a lot more.
I know this is wishful thinking on my part, but since the rights for TNA Impact the game are up for sale (At least I think they still are) THQ could by the rights and make TNA Impact 2. Now THAT would be worth the hype.

Oh, totally. =D

Do you also find it kind of hilarious that Suicide has already been almost completely trumped by D'Angelo Deniro? XD See, that's the risk you take when you market a game and a character together - the character may not have lasting appeal.

Seriously, TNA has so much that would translate wonderfully to a video game, and they didn't really take advantage of it. They have the best high-flying, tag-team and female divisions around today. They have some of the greatest wrestlers in history on their roster, and some of the more complex and diverse storylines in the industry today...and yet they only let you take control of one character in story mode? oO

Not only do I find it funny, I find it awesome, because D'Angelo Dinero is the man. Maybe this will lead to the return of Kazarian. Again, wishful thinking.

Midway had no idea what to do. THey HAD all this great material to work with, and just...didn't. The game was almost the opposite of TNA. TNA has about 70 billion moves shown every night, TNA the game had 12. And CAW was crap!
