I'm pretty sure I've lost some "cool" from my fellow TES fans, but seriously, Oblivion;'s fast travel was fine. I'm tired of walking everywhere on the 18th play through,
Were the Silt Striders and Boats not good enough?

And what about Mark/Recall and Divine intervention!?

Sorry, I just love Morrowind.

There were the Silt Striders (something like that) but unless you only wanted to go to a major city, you would still have some walking to do. So whatevs.

Edit: Ninja'd!!!!!!! NO! God I love Morrowind also. I think it's better than Oblivion, but only a little.

The closest thing to fast travel is the helicopter, but after crashing three choppers into a Phone line while attempting the same landing, I've given up on helicopters in that game.

Please tell me that there isn't a fast travel function that I missed because I'm oblivious...
This might be late but a taxi, If you have enough money, which could easily be obtained. There's a skip the ride button.

Oh yes, I got bored trudging everywhere in that game, to say nothing of being constantly assaulted by cliff racers.

Assassin's Creed 1.
Assassins Creed had fast travel. You just had to finish one of the missions in each city first. I think in the 3rd memory block is when it lets you simply jump to each city and then back to your base.

Mercenaries 1 could probably use it. Does saints row 2 have fast travel? I don't think it does. It should have.
In SR2 you can call up a taxi to pick you up and take you pretty much anywhere on the map...You can get the gab numbers off of the side of the taxis.

Every Battlefield game. Even though they had vehicles and planes for fast travel if you ended up stuck in the middle of anywhere with no vehicle in sight or no teammates driving by with a vehicle to pick you up you had to do that running till you get tired over and over again while trying to not get shot, blown up, or run over by enemies with vehicles.

Yup, the first mods I got for Oblivion were ones that added Mark/Recall and Intervention spells, that system was simply both more realistic and more fun than the Oblivion one which was too easy and required complete suspension of belief. Using Mark/Recall, the Interventions, the Propylon Chambers, and the Fast Travel NPCs was one of the highlights of Morrowind, it added a level of realism and made you think about how you were getting to places. The only thing really lacking was the inability to make a Recall on Target spell, that would have been awesome, although understandably impossible to balance.

I would say Risen, but the idea of slogging it all over the place has a strange appeal that i felt lacking in Oblivion. Looks like I shall have to but Morrowind soon.

EVE and morrowind i gave up on morrowind half way through from pure frustration
I'm pretty sure that fast travel wouldn't really work in EVE because it's an online multiplayer game, and any form of time manipulation (such as fast travel, bullet time in online shooters or the rewind function in online GRID races) is impossible to implement in those types of games, as every player in the universe has to experience the exact same timeline, at exactly the same pace for the game's universe to work.

Why a compromise? No one forces you to using Fast Travel. If you want to not use it at all, do so and if you want to use it with limitations, do so. Has it stands, in my opinion, the Fast Travel system in Oblivion was awesome. I can't even imagine how boring it would have been for me to walk(Or ride) from one end of the map to another.

OT: Every single game(except RTS's for obvious reasons) which features a very large map.

it would work like say an catapult type thing like in mass effect and it would have to cost money and only work in non combat areas then i think it would work

During Daggerfall this was considered a feature. If you wanted faster travel, you bought a horse.
Yea, I've played it.

I mean, the Silt Striders (Morrowind) are fine to an extent, but heck I just want to warp places that aren't cities too.
I felt that the fast traveling in Oblivion made things a bit too easy and discouraged actually travelling over all that nice terrain. Then I played Morrowind and missed fast travel desperately. So maybe a compromise? I was thinking of a gameplay mechanic that only allowed you to travel within a certain radius around your character, and that took time to recharge. That way, you wouldn't be stuck hoofing it the entire way, but at the same time not missing all of the places that you wouldn't find otherwise (plus, leveling up in athletics is always good).
I think the Fallout 3 system works pretty well. You have to walk somewhere the first time, and then you can fast travel.
It's so massive, there's just way too much walking.

Isn't the answer to this pretty much - "open world game that doesn't have fast travel"?

Though, games with a lot of "backtracking" (like metroid prime) could use fast travel, sometimes your ships checkpoints weren't enough.

Metroid Prime series.
All three of you sort of missed the point in your respective games. I mean, the waste-walking in Fallout 3 was one of the best parts, and Metroid Prime was built on atmosphere that would be quashed if you could simply fast travel.

Hmm...yeah, I could see that. Putting what is effectively a Mass Relay, especially one you have to pay for, could easily work in a game like Eve, assuming it's not required.

Battlefield: Bad Company.

Driving from point to point was probably one of the most boring aspects of the game. Actually, the campaign was pretty boring anyways... But it still needed fast travel.
