Games That Probably Shouldn't Have Been Games

Has anyone felt that a game didn't fit right as a video game, but would probably work as, for example, a television show or movie or even a book? It's an interesting notion, and admittedly an ironic one for me, since I have yet to encounter a game that fits such a description.

Heavy. Rain.

Oh, and Metal Gear 4. Actually, I'm not convinced it wasn't just a picture book in disguise.

Interesting choice. What medium, then, should it have been? Movie? TV show? Comic book? Novel?

I find it hard to imagine Heavy Rain as anything else but a video game, honestly, what with its de-lineralized plot.

Mirror's Edge. The cinematic preview of that game was so much better than the actual gameplay. It might have worked as a movie though, if they added a little more depth to the plot.

My biased opinion, based on how much I hated it while playing it? It should've been a vague, quickly-dismissed ambition in a developer's mind.

My slightly more objective opinion? I could see it manifesting most feasibly as a TV show, wherein all the myriad of plot threads could have been made somewhat more manageable over separate episodes. LOST does this fairly well, in my opinion. As a movie I think it would've just become too overwhelming, likewise a novel. I could potentially see it being a graphic novel, though...

From what I hear (360 player *sad face*), Heavy Rain sounds like some kind of detective/crime thriller.

I thought it was a fun game, and I'm actively waiting for the sequel. It would take a lot of padding to the plot in order to make it into a movie, as the plot was basically non-existent.

OT: I haven't really played any games that should have been another medium.

What, you mean keep the CG graphics and 1st person view, then put it up on the big screen...?

I have to admit, that sounds awesome and bordering on the revolutionary.

In terms of a linear plot, what about Tarantino movies? Pulp Fiction had a non-linear story and it worked out really well.

Well, I was referring to ability of the game to move on and the plot to adapt accordingly if a character died.

Edit: I mean, wasn't that one of Heavy Rain's selling points? Btw, welcome to the Escapist!

Yeah, it was, but that's only considered to be non-linear in an interactive medium like a game (and when describing Heavy Rain, I use the term "game" very loosely). In a movie or TV show, say, the death of a character is scripted like everything else. It could easily be turned into another medium so long as the producers stuck to one of the potential iterations of the plot...which, since they all lead up to pretty much the same ending, honestly wouldn't change all that much.

Exactly, other mediums, such as TV shows and movies, have to commit toward a specific plot line. That's why it's hard for me to imagine Heavy Rain in another medium, since as a video game, all the possible plot lines can be explored, unlike in TV shows and movies.

Modern Warfare 2 could of been a flipbook or a powerpoint

/trollin/

Just Cause 2 shouldn't of been a game, it should of been a Michael Bay Movie. They made it a game anyway though.

Any MGS game. Honestly, Kojima has the lowest gameplay/cutscene ratio EVER.

Keep in mind, I've only played 1-3 and Portable Ops.

Umm... yeah, I've thought about the MGS series (although MGS3 seems to be least-offending of the gameplay/cutscene ratio), and I really can't seem to think of a medium MGS could fill in quite nicely... although a huge TV series would probably be the closest to doing it some justice.

I would like to see World Of Warcraft as a tabletop RPG. You start by creating a character, then go on adventures in order to gain experience and find useful or valuable items, occasionally doing battle with fantasy creatures and...

What?
