For most of the second one, I had absolutely no idea what was going on.
It's not that complex of a story line to follow if you look closely.I could even follow it when I was 12.
OT:None that I can think of right now.
I don't think it's that the storyline was particularly complex, it's that it revolved around vague, ethereal concepts that I had trouble relating to the game's established universe. Hearts as a kind of "soul" was an easy enough concept to grasp, but when darkness, light, realms that are referenced but never actually seen, Nobodies and Heartless that pretend to be human get involved, the whole thing gets needlessly messy.
Take the idea of Kingdom Hearts as a place, for example. I've played the first and second games countless times, and I
still don't quite get what it's supposed to be. The first game has me believe it's the door to all worlds, and possibly a source of great darkness, hence Ansem/Xehanort's Heartless's interest in it. Sora points out that Kingdom Hearts is "light", but if that's the case, why do we see that it's filled with Heartless, and in need of being sealed shut "for good"?
It's stuff like that, see? I don't think KHII was a bad game, I just think I would have enjoyed it more if they were talking in terms that weren't so meta-physical. The first game was much lighter in that respect. There's still a lot of talk about light, darkness and hearts, but it usually manifested in ways that were tangible, and had noticeable effects on the game's world.
