I saw a thread about what movies should be games. I immediatly said "Screw that!" and went to write this thread. Turning movies into games is a stupid idea, that has ALMOST never worked out. Remember playing Iron Man: The Game? Remember the amazing combat, exhilerating flying sections, and fantastic hidden cutscenes that completely changed how you percepted Iron Man?
OF COURSE NOT! Iron Man: The Game was one of the most abysmal creations in modern gaming. The MOVIE wasn't even good (To me anyway. It was fine, but not good.).
Some games have amazing potential in other mediums, especially movies. What if Bioshock was a movie? Mass Effect as a movie would be like making a whole new Star Trek, although admittely I probably wouldn't watch it, but anyway...
My point is, a lot of games could have huge potential as movie franchises. What games should (or could)be movies? (or have movies based off of them.) What has the greatest potential for success?

(Turning games into movies might be a bad idea, because removing the interactive element makes the whole idea a lot less attractive, but shut up. I'm bored and can't sleep.)

Bioshock would be a terrible movie (or at least a disgrace to the source material) because it would have to be heavily compressed into a 90 minute box office smash hit, probably losing most of its beautifully haunting atmosphere in the process.
Mass Effect would be a terrible movie (or at least a disgrace to the source material) because it would have to be heavily compressed into a 90 minute box office smash hit, probably losing most of its beautifully written sci-fi epicness in the process.
Any game ever would be a terrible movie (or at least a disgrace to the source material) because it would have to be heavily compressed into a 90 minute box office smash hit and whatever unique qualities that made that game so loved would undoubtedly be lost in translation.

Well, since you admit it and acknowledge it.

Hm... Star Wars: Battlefront 2! oh... wait... thats what the Clone wars was supposed to be.

The persona Series would work, I think. But it would be toned down. Soul Calibur would be nice if you followed Siegfried's story and included some of the major cannon characters. And I heard they wanted to do a Halo movie.

Prince of Persia didnt do too bad, as long as it was handled like that, i wouldnt mind.

Nope, Never, don't even think about it,

Dunno whether you noticed, but Hollywood BUTCHERS EVERYTHING.

Edit : Yeah though, Bioshock could work, it needs knocked down a pedal...
Seconded.

OT: If I HAD to choose a game to become a movie I'd probably go with Uncharted or Uncharted 2. At least then we'd pretty much get Indiana Jones, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Assuming that the movie would be a faithful adaptation of the game that respected existing canon and catered mainly to existing fans (which is impossible) I'd like to see a Mass Effect or Halo movie.

Bioshock has a potential but i think that would get killed by a director and a producer who would have no idea about it.

Metal Gear Solid has a movie in the works and i believe that i will be good..or at least it should be considering David Hayter (the voice of Snake) is involved heavily with the process.

Do you remember The Punisher game? King Kong game? effing Goldeneye? It IS possible to make a decent game out of a movie. Just doesent happen often.

I didn't say it was impossible or that it's never happened, just that it ALMOST never happens. Also I didn't play Goldeneye, i'm not old enough to have played it, unless you mean the remake. They are good games, and probably one of the only exceptions, but three good games do not justify decades of mediocraty.

Red Dead Redemption'd be fun. The game's already pretty cinematic with a few epic bits tossed in. Just trim the game down into an easy to follow basic storyline without including any of the side quests and I think it'd be a great movie.
I'd watch it, at least.

Honestly.. I think Homeworld could make a good movie, just cut out most of the spacefights and have show the life of the crew and the fighterpilots as the mothership hyperspaces its way to the homeplanet. Heck, it could even have a sequel about defending said homeplanet.

And Final Fantasy could probably become movies... Animated ones anyway.

Maybe Square-Enix could make an animated homeworld movie.. Win/win.

Isn't Bioshock already being turned into a movie though?

It'll be pretty hard to make a proper game-to-movie due to the fact that a game can be between 8-10 hours long, which has to be compressed to around 2 hours? Prince of Persia did pretty decently, but how many other video game movies have totally screwed it up?
(Don't take Uwe Boll movies into account. That would just skew the comparison to one side and off a bloody cliff.)

Uhmmm, well, I can think of many MANY great games that could make the transition, only if executed by the Right people!

i'm thinking:
- Street Fighter
- Red Dead Redemption
- Legend of Zelda (but of course, it would have to be OoT)
- Fire Emblem

I honestly think I could write a good screenplay, and might do-so if i have an extra 3 weeks to spare...
I hate to think that some of the directors who will take these-on will screw them-up so much.
if any of those ^^^ movies are ever made (apart from Street Fighter, which was effed-up) I hate to think what would happen, then if they were made RIGHT, people wouldn't see them because of what was shown before...

When I played Red Dead redemption it felt like I was watching a movie. The ending for example for me would've been much better suited to a movie, for the game the ending was bad, if it were a movie, it would've been good.

So yeah I'd say RDR would be the only game I can think of that might make a good movie.

Well let me just say this first, IF and only IF they do it well, otherwise leave them alone.
And I would mostly prefer all of this be done by Pixar, games and animated movies just fit together alot better.
1. BioShock, with an amazing world and ideas as that the movie could just go wild
2. Half Life, no shortage of story and wonder in that world
3. Sins of a Solar Empire, while the game has no story by itself they could fill the setting with an incredible backdrop
4. Portal, I see it as the next step of The Cube, as a horror movie with several people trying to survive a strangely sick puzzle game with death at every corner
5. Warhammer 40k, alot of factions, alot of back-story, it could quite easily become a series of movies (Yes I saw Ultramarines, surprisingly good just lacks the spark and polish of a top production movie)

Half Life would work, but not the main story. More like a spin off type thing.

System Shock 2.

Deus Ex.

Thief.

They need to be gritty and well written, not just a collection of stoneriffic imagery thrown together to a flavour-of-the-month soundtrack. Yeah, Deus Ex (1, or 'The Conspiracy') screenwritten by the Coen Brothers, directed by Neill Blomkamp, with effects by Weta Workshop/Weta Digital.

I would actually go to the cinema and pay to see it opening night.

Not attempting to flame here, but if Sir Jackson didn't see any potential with the Halo franchise, then there just may not be enough for a compelling movie. Game, sure, movie, maybe not. As previously stated, not a trolling/flaming attempt, just an opinion.
