So I have had a couple of nice suprises recently, just wondering what has been floating other peoples boats.

Went to a store today, looking for something on PC when Metro 2033 caught my eye.
I'd heard mixed reports before and also questioned if I'd enjoy it but, I figured it'd make a decent DX11 show for my system as it's meant to be about the best looking dx11 game out there at the moment... plus it had a free copy of Red Faction Guerrilla (which doesn't matter if it's good or bad if it's free)
Well, only a few hours in but, fuck me, I think it's really good... atmosphere is, I find, utterly superb, feels far more like pst apocalypse than pretty much every other game I've played in that setting... knows when to show you things and when to merely suggest there might be something nasty in those shadows other there... it does look sweet in DX11 with everything maxed out... good buy I think.

Also

Trine, on steam. Downloaded the demo the other week while I was bored, brought the game straight after... what a brilliant little 2D game, was amazed by that little gem.

So what games have you come to play lately that you was suprised to really enjoy?

Nier.

It was a game I was excited for until I saw almost everyone giving it poor reviews.

I went ahead and got it anyway and wow, I am never going to listen to so called "professional" reviewers again.

Just Cause 2. I thought it would just be really "typical". Luckily, it strived for camp rather than realism and I was in for a treat.

Alpha Protocol. Despite the vast amount of hate that game got (mostly from people who've never actually played it) I really had fun playing it. I managed to get two really fun playthroughs of it on a 3 day rental. That was the last game that suprised me.

I re-installed the original Dungeon Keeper. I forgot how unbelievably fun and addictive that game is.

Metro 2033 is damn good, isn't it? I loved it myself.
It really is mate... I was expecting "Ah, it's ok, I've brought it now so I will play it through", and was just feeling it'd be a DX11 tech demo for me. But no, very good game that looking forward to playing it to the end.

Which, after the mostly average response it got from reviews, is making me think I might go ahead and try Alpha Protocol despite critics, as DividedUnity said.

Dragon Age. After all the hype died down I was fairly implacable in my viewpoint, but I got into a bit of a games drought and picked it up just to see.

Red Dead Redemption. I thought it was going to be good, but it surpassed my expectations.

Red Dead Redemption. I found it a LOT more enjoyable than I thought it would.
Same here. After the overwhelming hype given to GTA IV, I was suspicious of the still high marks given to this game. I enjoyed GTA, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't call it perfect. So far I've had a lot more fun with RDR than I expected.

This week I got Burnout Paradise in the Steam deals for 4?.
I though "Meh, I did like Burnout: Revenge, and it's only 4? with expansion... I guess i'll try it out".

It's far better than I expected! The open game world is full hidden spots and shortcuts. And online play is so well implemented!

Have not regreted it, 10 hours in already

The last true surprise of a game for me was World in Conflict, which was about 3 years ago. I was expecting a fairly decent strategy game with some nice graphics and alot of things going boom. What I wasn't expecting was one of the more interesting storylines I have ever seen in a strategy game. Oh, and it had 80s rock in it, which is always a plus. ;P

Fallout 3 was nice too, but I bought that due to recommendation, so I was kinda expecting an awesome game anyway. ;P

A throw-back to this past fall, but I was pretty surprised by how good Mass Effect was. I got it as a gift about a year before I actually played it, and I kept putting it off because it seemed like just another shallow shooter. Thankfully, I couldn't have been more wrong.

the most recent Disney games.

Split/Second is a gas to play, and Toy Story 3 while easy, isn't the pile of crap a movie/disney game one would think it is.
