I torrented Torchlight just to see what it was like and got totally addicted for a few days. I can't remember why I stopped playing at all, actually.

Bayonetta is one of my favorite games now. I was expecting it to be pretty 'meh'.
This one definitely got me as well. I thought it would be all about "look at her ass" and absolutely no though into anything else. Boy was I surprised to see it had a hella fun combat system and a difficulty curve and quickly made me its *****

I was pleasently surprised by Condemned: Criminal Origins earlier today. I figured it would be another overhyped peice of crap; and while it's not nearly as frightening as people made it out to be, it's still pretty enjoyable.

Also, much like the OP, I bought Metro 2033 on a gut feeling and promptly played it through three times over and went to bed with it; likewise with The Forgotten Sands.

And on the other end of the scale, I was horribly surprised when I realized that Mass Effect 2 was the proverbial Forever to the first one's Batman.

Alpha Protocol. Despite the vast amount of hate that game got (mostly from people who've never actually played it) I really had fun playing it. I managed to get two really fun playthroughs of it on a 3 day rental. That was the last game that suprised me.
This. After hearing that Alpha Protocol was getting bad reviews, I was hesitant to get, but I decided to rent it anyway. The game was fun, there were bugs, but the game wasn't that bad. At least the game makes me feel like I am a spy, especially on the dialog heavy missions, I would find myself sometimes second guessing my decisions. Or wondering who might be betray me and who could I really trust.

Metro 2033. Super atmospheric awesome. KHHAANNN is my new hero.
Hell yeah! You know that a game is really good when the linearity of it doesn't bother you one bit..

For me it's The Longest Journey...left me speechless

Red Dead Redemption. I thought it was going to be good, but it surpassed my expectations.

Alan Wake. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did, but I borrowed it off my friend and wow.. That game kicks-ass in so many ways.
I hate to be unoriginal but all three of these games i was expecting to be good but they have just... totally gone above and beyond what i was hoping to get out of them. If I didnt have a good 15 games i havent played yet needing to be beaten i'd probably still be collecting halos and skinning boars.

Just too add to the conversation Demigod really impressed me. I had so much fun playing that game even on my crappy PC. Been a long time since i stayed up straight through till sunrise playing a game and it did it.

The demo for Transformers: War For Cybertron. "HOLY SHIT! This is so awesome!" I really want to get the full game now.

The fact that I enjoy FPSs surprised me, particularly war type FPSs. I'd always looked at them before and thought I wouldn't enjoy them, but now it's my favorite genre, and my current favorite game is Bad Company 2.

For context: I'm a girl, and while I'm not the Casual Games or strictly RPG type of girl, War themed stuff has never really appealed to me. But now I own real-life guns and play (by vast majority) FPSs.

Battlefield bad company 2. Near perfect game with no lag, until dice released a big multiplayer update to fix the lag I never had (and it moved a couple things slightly) it is now so bad I can't bare to play it anymore. That was a help of a surprise.

boderland, yeah its been out for a long time, but sense i didn't like fallout 3 and to me border lands looked like an animated version of it i never played it. however my friend got it and said it was 2 player. and sense gaming, like bathing, is better with a friend so i decided to try it with him and i found it enjoyable....that being said i probley wouldn't find it so if i was to go single player.

Alpha Protocol for sure. After all the mediocre reviews I was very tentative about buying it, especially as I've never been a big fan of stealth OR RPG hybrid games. In fact, I can't remember what made me buy it in the first place, I just kind of did. But when I played it, I found it to be a lot of fun and its moments of brilliance outshone its admittedly numerous flaws.
