Nope, whilst my younger (around 13, I don't know) brother does like MW2, I've taught him how to use a keyboard/mouse and he's enjoyed L4D2 and Fallout 3.

He plays Rollercoaster Tycoon and other games I've had since I was little, I have a huge amount of games I've collected since I was around 5 so there are things I played at his age and there's obviously going to be something he likes there.

I've told him why Modern Warfare 2 is crap in my opinion as well, he seemed to understand. As he gets older and I give him this computer I'll start teaching him properly.

There are certainly people who blindly follow whatever the masses do though, but I'm not letting a sibling of mine do the same.

Correct, my point was to do with the lack of variation in some gamers' palate. I'll play anything put in front of me, while my brother will play CoD and nothing else. At all. Before CoD, it was Halo 3.
Before that, it was GTA San Andreas. And before that, gaming was for nerds.

How is a flexible, balanced MMO, in which the company LISTENS to its fanbase, a danger to gaming? Because its popular, and does MMOs right? If MMO's want to compete; they should come up with original ideas, and get them to work. WoWs idea was accessability, and it worked pretty damn good.
Uh oh, looks like you pissed off a fan.

OT: Any game that makes people think that everything else is gay ruins the industry.

I feel rare in that I am the sort of gamer who will play anything from Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo to Ace Combat to Final Fantasy to Command & Conquer to Sim City.

Only things I don't touch are Sports Games and Racing Games. Because they are pointless wastes of time that are all identical. Nothing new has appeared in those for a good five-ten years.

I remember when CS grew in popularity.
It was the same thing as this you mentioned with MW2.

It's just a phase, it'll grow away (hopefully).

And here I must stop you.
May I remind you about the male Blood Elves?
You know, when Blizzard only listened to the cries of the American fanbase who screamed "OMG GAY" so loud that Blizzard were forced to change them into something they were not?

Changing them from being addicted to magic to addicted to the gym.
Yeah, some listening to the fanbse.

Trust me, they do not listen to the gamers.
They only do what will earn them the most money.
It won't go away. It'll change.
My other brother, this one sixteen, refuses to pay for Just Cause 2 for fear of the first brother becoming addicted to that instead.

Those games seem to have the opposite effect to me. Now NO ONE can make a gritty realistic shooter except Infinity Ward and DICE without millions of fanboy's yelling "CLONE CLONE CLONE", all the other developers have to target other markets. Seriously, name one codish shooter that has done well.
Difficult question to answer, my friend.

While the CoD supporters who use forums are usually smart enough to scream CLONE CLONE CLONE, how many 13 year olds do you know of who do this?

I have a little brother, one who gets whatever the hell he damn well pleases. Unfortunately, after playing my copy of the original Modern Warfare (which, was decent enough), he started getting games that were gritty, shitty, and "realistic". Shitty games like Frontlines clog my game library. If your a teenager, you dont care if its a clone, or a quick cash in. You just wanna shoost stuff with your "realisitic" rifles (That never jam, need cleaning, make noises that are no where close to accurate, and can be shoot near a window without it shattering).

AS FOR MY MMO POINT, instead of responding to the 4 other messages and points, Ill just reiterate my point.

ANY game is addictive. ANY game can sink a person in, for HOUR on end, and rob them of other games. I have a friend who's life consists of working 6 hour shifts, and when he doenst entertain guests or go out with friends, he sits his ass in front of MW2. I dont think sinking time into a game ruins the industry; I think its actually the games themselves that threaten the industy. CoD and Halo spawn unoriginal clone games, that sell to idiots and teenagers, which really kills independence in gaming. Why make a good, original idea when you dont need to?

Game addiction =/= ruining the industry

Also, I would like to deviate for a second, and ask fellow WoW fans why Wrath was so bad?

As a player since Vanilla, I liked Wrath. The difficulty is near-on par with that of Van and BC. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE, however, is accessability.

Blizzard made it easier to recieve raiding-quality gear. Which, trust me, is a good thing. Raiding was much less fun when you had to wait HOURS to get geared enough individuals. Getting gear was about as fun as getting punched in the throat. Blizzard making gear easier to get your hands on was not a bad thing; it cut down the time it took to get into raiding, making it easier for people who couldnt sink 9 hours a day into WoW to be able to experience its content.

I assure you, the raids now are just as hard as the raids in other expansions. The only factor to change is gear. The ONE exception being SWP. /shudder

You mean the fanbase that has been split between those addicted to wow and those with no interest patiently awaiting another RTS game (that has been years coming)? I wouldn't call ignoring the half that don't like your current plan "listening" :S

Do you honestly not see how WoW damages the gaming experience of gamers? Before WoW, subscription gaming on the PC was unthinkable, since its success other companies (activision) are taking steps to introduce it to other platforms, games for windows live destroyed entire games (poor universe at war) by trying to imitate the limitless revenue raised by WoW. It has permanently changed multiplayer for the worse. It's also done horrors for the reputation of videogamers at large, with it's addictive nature the worst of WoW players (naturally those who are highlighted to the public are these ones) tend to be unhygienic, antisocial and in some cases addicted to the point of foregoing sleep and food (people have actually died because they've been unable to leave the game, which sure as all fuck hurts the greater publics perception of gaming).

Not really a game but a addition of game worry me. Maybe it's just me but the whole 3D gameing (and maybe 3D movie) trend seems like it will either fail and take gameing down a peg. Because the only 3D I've seen and like alittle is waht nintendo is doing with the 3DS or 3DDS or whatever it's called.

But I'm not going to buy a 4th DS because of it.
I want to disagree with you here but I think, in my heart, I feel the same way, that it'll turn out to be some gimmicky scam like most Wii games are,(sadly, lot of wasted potential there) where *every* game has to utilize it. Either that or it'll be super expensive proprietary hardware that only the super elite rich can afford.

I have to admit though, going back to the movie, Avatar here, when I saw that in 3D, one of the first thoughts that popped into my head was, wow, that'd be nifty if a FPS had immersive 3D environments and floating heads up displays (and racers mmm).

mindless shooting in self contained missions and then being flung into multiplayer is his defnition of what he likes best?

Grrrrrrrrrr. Pretty much the games that are so mind numbing such as COD.

Not too many are out there.

Can I point out that this is technically illegal. The big red 18 on the front of the box should give that away...

Hmmm True points, True points. But what I keep seeing and hearing is that people are shelling out money for games and game systems. Ok... then more money must be spent on HDTV's to get the best expereince. Now 3D is comeing around but also in movies and some...

(I speak from expernece of conversation not tested proof so don't shun me)

...people think this is something else that will be either forced on them or hung over there head as something else you haft to buy in order to fully enjoy games.

It's either the fear of change or the anger over companies should be working on games instead of 3D.

the only game I think of that has ever threatened the industry was E.T for the Atari 2600.

Hm... Wii? Maybe? Motion controls are still somewhat in its infancy...

Playstation Move and the Microsoft Wave (or Project Natal) are brave steps towards trying to make it better, but I'm not convinced it's the right time for it. Maybe when the Wii can produce great games from third party developers, but other than that, all what we have on the Wii at this stage are games that would work better with a traditional controller. Red Steel 2 being an exception to this.

Alan Wake. Yeah alot of what is there is good but we are given only half the game, told there is expansions coming before the games release that take place in season one as they are calling it and Season 2 has already been written.

I say Alan Wake because if they can get away with milking us gamers for everything we are worth then how long before other companies start doing the same. Releasing half of the game or taking parts out to sell to us later.

Uncharted 2 for its writing. There is a reason I won't watch movies. I can't stand holliwood writing. It sucks. Uncharted 2 had by far the most unlikeable character in the return of that female (Her name escapes me) I mean seriously just let me play as her instead. Don't make me sit through this crap. Then you have a final boss which there is no way I believed he was the actual boss, honestly I thought he worked for the real final boss but they sure proved me wrong and gave the worst final boss fight I can recall.

As in general Holiwood fasion they miss the point and the ending is crap with her surviving the unsurvivable so yeah we get to put up with her another game (WHY!!!)and Drake doesn't kill the guy and that is supposed to make him better. AH no. It makes him worse because when all is said and done at least the warlord finished what he started.

Then you have the utter lack of creativity as the story is just the first game repackaged. They even through in Nazis for good effect. I liked the first game better. It was original, it was well written, and it had the old dude (Seriously I can remember his name but he quits early on in the second game).

Since its creation, the videogaming industry has spawned a few games that seemed to cripple their brethren.
It's easiest to explain through an example. Since the release of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, my thirteen year old brother has played nothing else.
Despite personal preferences, I'm sure we can all agree that Rome: Total War is an absolute classic. He looked at the Desktop icon, and said 'it's not my thing.'
I asked what his thing was. He launched into a lengthy anecdote about the aforementioned first person shooter. I tried to convince him to play Borderlands, with much the same result.
So the point I give to you, dear Escapists, is a question. Do you share my experiences? And with which games?
I don't see how any of that threatens the industry. He seems to be into different games than you. Do you just not like Call of Duty?

No game is a danger to the industry.

Like it or not, but people that buy CoD and WoW buy it because they like it. I'd hardly call that a danger to the industry. People have free will to buy whatever the hell they want to and if they buy games that you find unworthy, then you're just gonna have to man up and accept it.
