Games that were a "complete fail"

I got into a very heated discussion with my friend about video games, in particular Dante`s Inferno and Shadow of the Colossus. He said Shadow of the Colossus was a "complete fail", which to my own knowedge, even if I didn't like the game at all, Shadow of the Colossus was one of the most successful and critical acclaimed PS2 games of all time. However I had evidence to support why Shadow of the Colossus was not a fail.

I was quite upset with this, because example: I could say I really disliked the Mass Effect series (which I dont, I love them), and because I dislike the game it is a fail. However I think some gamers may not know the difference between a fail and a game they dislike.

To me a fail of a game is one like LAIR, Duke Nukem Forever and Dikatana. Yes there may be people how like the games, but these games were as successful as the company wanted them to be. Factor 5 (company that made LAIR) even went under because the game was soo unsuccessful. Shadow of the Colossus doesnt really fit under this catigory of a "complete fail" whether I like the game, love the game, of if I hated the game to death.

Prohaps I am defending my personal favorite game and I am being bias, prohaps Shadow of the Colossus was a "complete fail" of a game. I just want some output on this fellow Gamers and
Escapist's, what is your examples of a failed game?

I agree with you definition of a failed game, one that even with media hype and hype from gamers STILL turned out to be a load of shit no one bought. And tell your friend to suck dick, Sotc couldn't of been that much of a fail if people still talk about it now, and in a positive manner. Oh! And isn't there a HD version coming out?

Finishing the topic in 3...2...1...

And you're right. It's one thing to not like a game, a bad game is something else entirely. I can't stand FIFA, but I won't say it's shit. It's a good football game. A game is bad when it simply doesn't work, and nothing works as bad as Big Rigs. Except maybe ET. Or New Vegas.

It's only a complete fail if the game had cost alot of money to make, but sold very little.

DNF is prolly a good example.

spore. seriously, watch the GDC 05 demo. It is nothing like that, and that was 3 years before the game came out.

I COULD say Dragon Age 2, but the game worked, and it was ok. Dragon Age 2 was not a fail, but wasn't as successful as it could have been.

Personally, I think it was a TERRIBLE game, an UNFINISHED game, but it didn't fail.

I think the only game I could say it completely fails is Sonic 2006.

Wowow, the game was ok. It was spread too thin over 5 different stages (Even though you always end up using the last one much much more), but it was fun non-the-less.

I've spent a whole lot of time playing that game, I wouldn't say it fails.

Command and Conquer 4, it succesfully stopped a long running franchise in it's tracks and EA Redwood was shut down shortly after it's realease. It also changed the gameplay from a genre defining RTS to a terrible RTT.

Superman 64. I seriously think "/thread" is lame... but really, i challenge you to find a worse game than that.

I must admit, you win. Superman 64 was a terrble, terrible game with no redeeming features whatsoever. A recent game that I thought was a "fail" is probably Duke Nukem forever.

Biggest one I can think of (apart for big rigs) would have to be Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight.
Worst game ever.
I regret buying it, even if it was on sale for £5.

1) Dirge of Cerberus
2) Daikatana
3) Final Fantasy 14

I could pontificate for days on those. However I only have the time to do one.

4) Cheetahmen
Worse in every way conceivable. I'd actually say it's the worst game ever made (that made it to retail). Imagine if someone slapped together the worst attempt at a Ninja Gaiden/Battletoads knockoff ever in Visual Basic, used graphics that looked like the drawings of a 4 year old, blatantly stole its music from another game and actually managed to get the game to retail for 50 bucks.

It's not even licensed schlock; you could realistically accuse Superman 64 of being shovelware. Cheetahmen doesn't even get that dubious honor! It sucks as hard as it can on its own.

When was the last time you saw a 2-D platformer that could crash at random just because you scrolled the screen right?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this, but...
Kane & Lynch 2.
It was blisteringly awful to even watch a friend play it, and he was regretting even getting the game for free as a present.
He seriously considered disowning the uncle who gave him the game.
It was torturous to play and watch. Even knowing that he owned the game brought him great shame.

Another horrific game is The Zoo Race, made by some INSANE religious activists who believe that non-believers will be convinced to "see the light" by playing a poorly coded game that turns people into animals.
I have nothing against religion, but christ my cracker, that game was so terrible I wanted to burn a bible.

Goddamn that game was a pile of shit. Mine is easily the Star Wars:Force Unleashed PC port. It weighed in at TWENTY FUCKING SEVEN GB. You couldn't change the controls, and the screen that explained what the controls were was a fucking diagram of an X-BOX controller map-out. The quick-time even where you pulled the star destroyer down had blatantly wrong prompts. If flat out prompted you to do the wrong thing, and only by 2 hours of trial and error did I fluke my way past it. The engine for the PC conversion was a bug riddled puddle of piss that crashed often. Easily the worst Steam purchse I've ever made, and the worst purchase across any platform I've made. I can't think of ways to bad mouth the game anymore.

I have to agree with FFXIV. It spoke volumes when they had to make the bloody thing free whilst they "fixed" it.
