I'm just now wrapping up Dragon Age: Origins. Wanna know when i started? [sub]No? Well this is my thread so shut up and listen.[/sub]
I started the game six months ago. However I stopped playing once I reached the Deep Roads. Anyone who's played it should automatically know what I mean, when I say: I stopped because I couldn't stand the combat anymore! I actually didn't think it was bad; It just that it got SO boring! I HAD to stop killing the same Darkspawn OVER and OVER and OVER again!
So why'd I come back to it? Because Dragon Age:Origins is arguably the most Well-written game I've had the pleasure of playing in recent memory. I loved New Vegas but it doesn't hold a Candle to DA:O's excellently-penned and masterfully voiced dialogue.
...and frankly I regret dropping it because of it's combat. My solution? I'm using a dev console cheat that insta-kills all hostiles in the room. I wish i didn't have to. In fact, I wish Dragon Age:Origins had no (or at least very little) combat. I wish it put it's whole attention into the ridiculously immersive Conversation system. Why does every game HAVE To have combat, anyway? Why can't it just be.....you know..... aRole-playing game?
So My question is: Have you ever played a game and thought it was ruined or at least heavily weakened by having unnecessary combat in it? It doesn't have to be because the combat was bad. Just....out of place?
Edit: Lot of great responses. I'm not surprised to see that Bioshock did not come up, but yeah, What about Bioshock? What if it focused more on "Environmental/plasmid combat" with non-combat options like stealth and Diplomacy(somehow) instead of just being a game where you burn and shoot people, and then listen to some Philosophy? Would it have been more..... meaningful? What if you could befriend the (normal) splicers and Big Daddies and lead them into an all out war against Fontaine's thugs?
