I just finished it and found it to be a mixed bag.

The atmosphere and story were amazing, but the play mechanics were broken in so many areas... those goddamn exploding orbs near the end were a nightmare, as was trying to fend off packs of mutants with the shoddy aiming and inability to strafe fast enough to dodge thier attacks.
Huh, I found the general gameplay to be fine.
Except the orb thing. Seriously, how did you get past that? I can't even on easy.

OT: Spore, and Prototype are the major offenders for me. Not terrible games, but not great. At lease Prototype was more entertaining than Spore.

Ugh I hated the fact he could die... he was practically suicidal at points.

If I hadn't figured out you could stop them spawning I don't think I'd ever have got through.
Yep, it took me a while to figure that out too. Even then it was pretty tough!

The other bit I utterly hated was the train mounted turret section, what was up with those controls?? When it ended and you
flew down the mineshaft at lightning speed
though, it was awesome.

You can shoot thier spawning pods and destroy them, which stops them coming from behind. It's still tough though because your team-mate is so suicidal.

Alan Wake, Prototype, Fallout 3, Resi 5, Crackdown, Prince of Persia (2008), pretty much all of the Final Fantasy games, Tomb Raider (I forget the name, the latest one), Gears of War, Halo...there are a lot of overrated games.

Two of the only games I think are absolutely, completely underrated are Beyond Good & Evil and American McGee's Alice.

Ahh the controls felt a bit off at first but they didn't take much to get a feel for.

Also that section brought on one of my most frequently used quotes!

Oh my gosh... It's a panzer!!

Sins of a Solar Empire!

I was hyped about this game for about 2 years before it came out. I'm a huge Home World 2 fan I still play it. From all I had heard I was expecting a HW2 game that had literal solar system sized maps, full 3d movements again, a 2 races of unique ships and tactics. What I got was a $60 bland general space RTS in a 2d plane with 3 races that all played the same. As for the maps yeah they're big but the space between planets is nothing more than a commute to war to add padding to the combat time.

Still feel like using Marston as your avatar though :p

O/T Killzone. They always hype the Killzone games up to be the most amazing games ever crafted, and then just turn out a bit...meh...

How bout spore? I found that game to be a huge pile of bollocks, even after it even got tonnes of hype in the non-gaming media.

Otherwise, MW2, which only got it's hype from the countless CoD4 fanboys looking for $60 to burn. As a non-MW fanboy, I honestly don't understand it.
Fable 2 was a similar thing too. Actually, I guess most sequel games have been pretty bad to me, especially when you're basically repackaging the same thing as before.
spore probably takes the cake in the most overly hyped game in existance!

I really should have restocked on ammo.
Trying that before, I could destroy about 4 before I ran out.

Super Mario Galaxy, Modern Warfare 2, GTA IV, Halo 3, Resident Evil 5, GTA San Andreas, Bioshock 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Crysis, Gears of War, Half-Life, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy 13, Super Mario 64.

I really could go on and on and on. I'm not easily impressed by videogames.

WOW

all my favorite games are not worth the hype to some....*gasp*

Borderlands - I was told by so many people how great it was. I get into it and, yes, I had fun... but I got bored of it pretty quick.

Halo (any #) - People praise the multiplayer but every time I play with some buddies, I get bored shitless. I like to play a game with some point to it. Going around and offing each other doesn't seem like a game with too much purpose. Never done single player (as I don't own the game) but multiplayer hasn't sold me at all.

Zelda: People praise how awesome this series is. While I like the music and some of the visuals, I get bored about third or second to last dungeon in the game. I put it down and never pick it up again. To me, it just feels a bit slow paced.

I'd add Final Fantasy to the list, but I don't know what about it makes me dislike it. I think it's just the general concept of FF that I can't stand... (yeah, doesn't make sense, but that's how I rationalize it).

I actually hasn't heard so much of Metro 2033, but from what I've seen, it looks like a great game.
And GTA 4 was utter rubbish, I hated every minute of that game. How can a game that is so boring get so much praise?
[SUB]Yes, I know, it's a GTA-game, GTA-games = good, until GTA4 came and ruined the franchise.[/SUB]

Halo and Bioshock. Neither managed to make me want to keep playing, and arguments like "BUT IT'S ON THIS FUCKING EPIC RING THINGYMABOB" or "IT'S IN THIS UNDERWATER CITY THINGYMABOB" just don't fix the gameplay problems.

Ok, everyone once in a while a game is released that is surrounded by truck-loads of anticipation and excitement, but when you finally get your hands on a copy and begin your play through, you find it completely dull and not worth the cash.

My most recent example of this was Dragon Age: Origins. I'd heard a lot of good things about the game, and fancied another RPG after months of playing FPS's. Two days after purchasing it, I found myself trading it in and buying Prototype. The same went for Farcry 2.

So, what games did you buy that you felt were seriously over-rated, and equally, what games did you enjoy that you felt deserved much more attention?
Gunna be honest with you, I feel exactly the same way about both of those games. Not worth the hype and attention they got

GTAIV; open world, social elements, darker and more serious story...sounds good on paper, doesn't it?
Oblivion; It looked so awesome on the preview videos, and all of the gorgeous screenshots. Then, uncanny valley populated by ~4 people (read: voiceactors). What a shame...

Dude, I've been wondering about Metro 2033. Is it sick? Sell it to me quick, make me justify going out and buying it today!
