Oblivion, a lot of people hate it and so do my friends. I ask myself why? It is one of my favorite games with a lot of re-play value.
I've found the majority of people like that game moreso than people do not. But... I'm sorry
I have to wonder why most games reviews sites gavei t a 9.0. I finished the game 100% (will never play it again) just so I could try my best to like it and also to stop people telling me I didn't give it a chance. I nearly almost did like it at one point (I actually enjoyed the Knights of the Nine quest), but the broken voice acting, fairly dubious plot, and the very outdated, repetitive battle system broke the game for me.
Immersive, this was not. Bethesda = Fail.
Heh, you must have one hell of a tolerant gut. Based on what you're saying, finishing "100%" of the game would entail the main quest, all the faction campaigns, the hundreds of side quests, and thousands of exploration opportunities, clocking in a total 80 hours of gameplay. And, since you mentioned the Knights of the Nine, I'll go under the assumption that you completed "100%" of both expansion packs including the main quest and all the side quests that each had to offer bringing it up to a total of 100 hours of playing a game that you hate. I'm not even going into the modding capability that the PC version holds. One question... Was someone holding a gun to your head while you were not enjoying yourself for so damn long?

....... And yes this IS my absolute favorite game of all time. Any game that gives me the urge to play it at least once every month three years after it came out must be doing something right in my book.
I bought it on PC originally, got halfway through and stopped playing it. I then bought it on PS3, curious to see if it was anymore enjoyable, and it was remotely.
Sadly yes, I did complete all the faction guild quests, and main quests, as well as every little other quest I could find.
I really tried my hardest to like the game, but I just couldn't get into it.
The battle system for me, was a real letdown. I'd been hoping for something alot more dynamic and original, like the battles from Dark Messiah.
My total hours for Oblivion were around 120 hours (I'm slow). Also, no, no-one was holding a gun to my head, but at least it gave me the right and the credentials to be able to say why I didn't enjoy this game without anyone being able to tell me I didn't give it a chance.

I guess you either really like it or you don't.

Athena for NES. If you haven't seen it, here's a video of some guy playing. Christ. I'm gonna go put myself on an ice floe now.

Hmmm well Oblivion and Fallout 3 seem to be bashed by a massive crowd of people (mostly the same people though), but I can't call them "unpopular" due to their massive fan base.

Aside from maybe Two Worlds, I can't think of any reviled games I wound up enjoying. Obscure ones yes, reviled no.

Mount and Blade is an example of a relatively obscure game which is why I think it's metacritic scores are so low.

The same could be said of like "Star Wolves 2" or (recently) "Planet Alcatraz" both decent science fiction RPGs availible for download only. They (especially PA) make Two World's voice acting look like Oscar material, but are fairly decent (if slow). PA doesn't even come up on searches on Gamefaqs. :p

Oh and I was also enough of a fanatical fan of the series where I *DID* enjoy the Farscape game though it's probably got to be a contender for "most hated" on someone's list.

Also for those referring to it, I don't think the Seach Bar applies since it was banned by the NOCCSS (On One Cares, Common Sense Society). As the proliferation of new threads that get attention compared to people chiming in at the bottom of older ones sort of shows.

I'm actually hoping that come the next major PAX-like nerd event NOCCSS actually starts burning search bars in effigy.

Well, I think that game suffers in part due to it's raw age. When I was very young I played that game a bit and didn't think it was THAT bad, though we did joke about how certain bits should have gotten them sued by Mcdonalds. :p

Not a GOOD game, but I think it's gotten slammed a bit more retroactively than it ever did when it was actually new.

I'd go with Fable 2. I ignored some of the hype and found it enjoyable.

Also Viva Pinata. Just because it's a kids game doesn't make it poor to the 18 year old kid who plays it.
agreed fable 2 was awesome

I think it suffers from coin vampire syndrome, wherein a game was ported from an arcade game meant to extract as much money from a child as humanly possible. Because Athena certainly made you pay harshly for dying, but didn't make it easy to live.

The WWE games for one, then there's the few good games that people hate because they're an unpleasable fan-base: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Halo (although I do like the inspired-by-Halo game Darkwatch a hell of a lot more).

I'm also liking Left 4 Dead 2 (I know the boycott group is pretty much gone, but I'm the only person in my circle of friends who likes the look of it).
